Last year I decided to make a photographic record of the cultural manifestations that are relevant in the state where I am from and, although I did not manage to record all of them, I was able to attend several and this is one of them.

Tamunangue to San Antonio
To locate ourselves geographically, I live in the state of Lara, known as the musical capital of Venezuela or the city of twilight, but today we are going to focus on music. In Lara there are many cultural manifestations that are directly related to the Catholic religion. From the procession of the Divina Pastora on January 14 to the dance of the Zaragozas on December 28 that commemorates the day of the Holy Innocents.
Today I especially want to tell you about one of those expressions of our culture that combines music with religion and is the celebration of San Antonio de Padua every June 13 with the Tamunangue dance.

Para ubicarnos geográficamente, vivo en el estado Lara, conocida como la capital musical de Venezuela o la ciudad de los crepúsculos, pero hoy nos vamos a enfocar en la música. En Lara hay muchas manifestaciones culturales que están directamente relacionadas con la religión católica. Desde la procesión de la Divina Pastora los 14 de enero hasta el baile de las Zaragozas los 28 de diciembre que conmemora el día de los Santos Inocentes.
Hoy en especial te quiero contar sobre una de esas expresiones de nuestra cultura que combina la música con la religión y es la celebración de San Antonio De Padua todos los 13 de junio con el baile del Tamunangue.
On days like these, the state is filled with color, flowered dresses, espadrilles, straw hats and cuatro, maracas and drums to dance to the ton and son of this traditional dance representative of Lara.
In my case, I live in a community where San Antonio is the patron saint of the place, so from a very young age I have lived with this tradition and I would dare to say that at least those of us who grew up in a Catholic home have danced Tamunangue at least once in our lives (I did it at school).

Días como estos el estado se llena de color, de vestidos con flores, de alpargatas, de sombreros de paja y de cuatro, maracas y tambores para bailar al ton y son de esta danza tradicional representativa de Lara.
En mi caso, vivo en una comunidad donde San Antonio es el santo patrono del lugar por lo que desde muy pequeña he convivido con esta tradición y es que, me atrevería a decir que por lo menos los larense que crecimos en un hogar católico hemos llegado a bailar Tamunangue al menos una vez en la vida (a mi me toco en la escuela).
It had been a while since I had attended a San Antonio procession but I knew that if I went out on the street that day I was sure to find one. So my brother and I grabbed our stuff and went on the hunt for a Tamunangue.
Hacia tiempo que no asistía a una procesión de San Antonio pero sabia que si salia a la calle ese día era seguro encontrarla. Así que mi hermano y yo agarramos nuestras cosas y salimos a la caza de un Tamunangue.
Also known as sones de negro, the Tamunangue is composed of 7 musical pieces plus the Batalla which is the one that inaugurates the whole celebration. To have a greater context of the dances here are the names “These sones are: Bella, La Juruminga, El Poco a Poco, El Yiyivamos, La Perrendenga, El Galerón and El Seis Figureao."
In each one of them, a different dance is performed, which can be more lively, as in the case of the Galerón, in which the dancers are never seen taking a break, or they can also narrate and indicate to the dancers what they should do, as in Poco a Poco.

También conocidos como sones de negro, el Tamunangue esta compuesto por 7 piezas musicales más la Batalla que es la que inaugura toda la celebración. Para tener un mayor contexto de los bailes aquí te dejo los nombres "Estos sones son: Bella, La Juruminga, El Poco a Poco, El Yiyivamos, La Perrendenga, El Galerón y El Seis Figureao."
En cada una de ellas se realiza un baile diferente que puede ser más movido como en el caso del Galerón, en el que en ningún momento se les ve a los bailarines tomar un descanso o también, pueden ir narrando e indicando a los bailadores que es lo que deben ir haciendo como en el Poco a Poco.
In this picture for example, you can see two men in La Batalla, a dance that as its name suggests represents a fight between the two. The truth is that it is one of my favorites to see live and even more when it is done by experts, it is crazy to see how they start “garrotazos”.

During the walk we stop at some houses that have previously decorated their altars with balloons and palms for the saint, either to pay a promise or simply out of devotion.
Durante la caminata nos vamos deteniendo en algunas casas que previamente han adornado su altar con globos y palmas para el santo, esto con motivo de pago de promesa o simplemente por devoción.
Something that I love about attending these events is to realize that, contrary to what I might think about the lack of interest of the new generations in this type of cultural expressions, I am pleasantly surprised to see that children as young as 4 years old are walking around with their respective costumes making part of the folklore.
Algo que me encanta de asistir a estos eventos es darme cuenta que, contrario a lo que pudiera pensar sobre el desinterés de las nuevas generaciones sobre este tipo de expresiones culturales, me sorprende gratamente ver que niños desde quizás los 4 años de edad andan con sus respectivos trajes haciendo parte del folclor.
I think it is important to clarify that I am not an expert on the subject, I do not pretend to be either, I just want to share with you this photographic record that I made in 2023, to somehow or other way to convey through these images the feeling that overflows in each of the devotees who dance to San Antonio de Padua.
Me parece importante aclarar es que no soy una experta en el tema, no pretendo serlo tampoco, solo quiero compartir contigo este registro fotográfico que hice en 2023, para de alguna u otra forma transmitir a través de estas imágenes el sentimiento que desborda en cada uno de los devotos que le bailan a San Antonio de Padua.
And of course we could not miss a photo of the musicians. Due to technical failures with the equipment that began to heat up from so many photos and videos that we recorded, we were not able to accompany the procession to its destination. And not only the equipment overheated, my brother and I were the same. Luckily there is always a man selling a raspado (slushy ice drink) in this type of event.
Y por supuesto no podía faltar una foto de los músicos. Por cuestiones de fallas técnicas con los equipos que comenzaron a calentarse de tantas fotos y videos que grabamos no logramos acompañar a la procesión a su destino. Y no solo los equipos se recalentaron, mi hermano y yo estábamos igual. Por suerte nunca falta un señor vendiendo un raspado (bebida de hielo granizado) en este tipo de eventos.
Undoubtedly, witnessing this type of expressions makes me appreciate my culture, my roots and the passion that each of the people who are in charge of perpetuating the tradition in the city and the country put into it.

Sin duda presenciar este tipo de expresiones me hacen apreciar mucho más mi cultura, mis raíces y la pasión que le ponen cada una de las personas que se encargan de perpetuar la tradición en la ciudad y el país.
