Hello plant based foodies, wherever you are in the world!
We recently talked in a post about World Vegan Day, a special day that marks the beginning of a whole month of celebration of the vegan philosophy worldwide; however, being vegan is not limited to just one or thirty days in the year, but is part of our way of life, it is a constant; and it is not something that generates stress, but on the contrary, it produces satisfaction, joy and happiness, since we live consciously, in respect and harmony with the rest of Creation.
That is why today, we wanted to share with you, dear friends of the Plant Power (Vegan) community, some simple tips on how to be vegan, which go beyond a plant-based diet, focusing on other aspects of everyday life. Perhaps many of you are already living this way without knowing it, that is, you are vegan in some areas of your lives and you have not realized it; so the following tips that we will offer you may shed some light on what it means to be vegan, and motivate you even more to choose or reinforce this way of life.
BE VEGAN
- Respect all animals, and this is not limited only to our pets or companion animals, (as they are also called), but to ensure the well-being of all animals on the planet, including wild ones.
- A fundamental aspect of respect and love for animals is not to participate in the trade of species (neither wild, nor exotic, nor domestic). In the case of wild and exotic species, because when they are removed from their natural habitat, it involves the murder of the parents to steal their young, in addition to the fact that they are transferred in terrible conditions, dying of suffocation, thirst, hunger or cold. When it comes to domestic animals, such as a dog or a cat, more than a pet, it is family, it is a friend, and family or friends are not bought. There are many abandoned animals, on the street or in shelters, that deserve a home, a family that loves them. This is A YES TO ADOPTION.
- Perhaps you cannot have an animal inside your house, since you do not have space or do not have the resources to take care of it, but you can be compassionate and kind to the street animals, giving them food and water, so that they have something to eat and drink.
- Many shelters do constant work to care for animals on the street, so if you collaborate with them either with material or financial donations, or giving part of your time in the performance of their work, or spreading information on your networks social, you help enormously in the protection and care of these little animals. However, you should be careful when choosing which organizations to support, because there are some that are fake.
- Sterilizing is an obligation, so if there are dogs or cats in your family, by sterilizing them you prevent them from reproducing and giving birth to more animals that will be abandoned, sick, mistreated and live in suffering. Also, this is very good for their health as it protects them from diseases like cancer.
- Vaccination and deworming is fundamental, it is one more duty, since you watch over the health of your animal family, and your own. There are diseases known as zoonoses, which affect animals and humans and are preventable with these simple preventive practices.
- Do not support cultural or "sports" practices, such as dog fights, cockfights, bullfights, bulls tail, rodeos, "sport" fishing, killing of dolphins, seals, sea lions and whales, among others; these are not sports, they are bloody, cruel, perverse practices. It is not logical, it is not healthy to obtain satisfaction from the death and suffering of another living being, it is something cruel and ruthless, which over time will bring negative consequences to your life.
- Plant honey plants, because even if you don't consume honey, you help bees and other pollinators to have food to continue existing on the planet.
- With regard to purchasing habits, a good way to be vegan is to buy from those small producers of fruits and vegetables that are close to your home, thus acquiring quality products and helping to strengthen the local economy, and avoiding long distribution and marketing chains.
- Try buy organic products. In this way you will have quality food on your table and you will support producers who respect agroecological standards.
- Avoid the use of disposable bags and packaging as many of these are not biodegradable. Favor the use of those that are biodegradable.
- Every day apply the philosophy of the Three Rs: Reduce, Recycle and Repair, in this way you will prevent the planet from getting dirty and sick from pollution. In this way you reduce your footprint on nature.
- Classify your waste, even when there are no recycling companies near your home, since bottles, containers, newspapers, magazines, boxes can have a second life, another use in the hands of other people. That is why it is said that the garbage of some is the treasure of others.
- Be aware of your energy consumption (electricity, fossil fuels), the less you consume, the less you will impact the environment.
- Water is one of the most valuable natural resources on the planet, and it is not eternal, as perhaps we have been led to believe, so consume it with awareness and respect.
- Incorporate every day to your daily menu, more vegetable products, such as grains, nuts, vegetables, fruits; if you are not vegan yet, you will progressively see and understand that this diet offers you much more well-being, health and you will like it, I assure you!
As you have seen, these tips show simple, logical and conscious ways to live in harmony on the planet, and they are not difficult practices to carry out. It is also important to point out that being vegan or not is a choice and an intimate, personal and conscious process, an individual and respectable decision, which should not be forced or made under pressure. It is something that is born and decided with total conviction. We would like to know your opinion about it. We read you!

I love how there is a window here for people who are not vegan to get closer because, as we know, being fully vegan is not as easy as deciding not to eat animals, first because there are instances where, for health issues, it's not possible, and other times for economic reasons, our surroundings don´t offer many options, but cutting our impact wherever we can does help a lot.
The first baby steps I think are consuming cruelty-free products, for example, eggs and milk (especially sub-products like cheese), which are the hardest ingredients to cut off when becoming vegan, as many people have reported, it´s not the same buying them from a large industry as getting them from a small farm where the cows and hens live almost as pets, and none of them are killed for the final product; maybe you have the space and have your own.
Another one is not buying fast fashion, nothing meant to be worn for just one season is worth buying. Social media has been horrible at that, it is encouraged to follow trends because it is good for sales, but the cost is very high.
And for the accidentally vegan part, haha, it happens to us in places where everything is far away and there are no water services... you won't see one single thing go to the trash without being previously reused, recycled, upcycled, or going to a cousin if it is still usable, we certainly won´t buy something we don´t really need, and for water, we collect the water coming from laundry, and showers, to use on the WC, and the water from the dishes to water the plants. I know people that think this is unthinkable, even gross, but for us, for me, it´s just the way to go.
I´d like to see what other people in this community think because their mindset is very different from the general public.
This is a super comment @tsunsica, you show many aspects of being vegan. We do not want to be exclusive, on the contrary, the more non-vegan people are encouraged to make vegan recipes, the better, because they will be seeing how much fun it is and the many benefits it brings.
We know that not all economies are the same, so we are flexible regarding certain ingredients that in other circumstances might not be allowed in vegan cooking, such as white sugar and highly refined wheat flour (to give you two examples); but we understand that due to accessibility, availability in the market and other circumstances, it is difficult for users to use certain ingredients.
The important thing here is not to be purists, but to try to make a friendly, conscious and simple vegan cuisine, and of course, to learn more and more about the vegan philosophy every day.
We also consider that being vegan is a decision that should be taken consciously and responsibly, when people are adults, it should not be something imposed. We respect that.
Everyone is welcome in this community, as long as they respect the community rules.
It is a pleasure to have you back again. A hug!
