Hola, amigos de HiveBook Club. Nuevamente por aquí para continuar este recorrido que he ido compartiendo por los libros que llegaron a mis manos, en esta ocasión quiero detenerme en una obra distinta a las anteriores, pero no menos profunda. Después de novelas intensas, aventuras, pasiones y conflictos humanos, toca el turno de volver a la poesía, y hacerlo desde nuestras propias raíces.

Como les he contado soy Cubano, específicamente de la provincia de Matanzas y en esta ocasión quiero compartir con ustedes El alba y la tarde, una antología poética de José Jacinto Milanés, publicada por la Editorial Matanzas con motivo del bicentenario de su nacimiento.

José Jacinto Milanés es una de esas figuras esenciales de la literatura cubana que muchas veces no se leen lo suficiente. Nació en Matanzas en 1814 y es considerado uno de los grandes poetas del romanticismo cubano.

La obra de Milanés está marcada por una sensibilidad extrema, una profunda melancolía y una mirada introspectiva que, incluso hoy, después de tantos años, resulta conmovedora. Esta antología, corresponde a una selección hecha por Cristian Frías, quien también hizo el prólogo de la misma. En ella propone un recorrido por distintos momentos de la poesía de Milanés.

El título del libro: El alba y la tarde no es casual, alude tanto a las etapas de su vida como a los tonos de su escritura, desde la luz inicial hasta la introspección más sombría. Es por eso que leer este libro es acompañar a un poeta en su tránsito emocional, en sus dudas, sus anhelos y sus silencios.

Podemos apreciar que la poesía de Milanés no grita, no busca deslumbrar con artificios. Es más bien una poesía íntima, en ocasiones frágil, que habla del amor, de fe, de dolor y de la soledad. En sus versos se percibe una lucha interna constante, una sensibilidad que parece no encontrar descanso. Sabemos que su vida estuvo marcada por la enfermedad mental y el aislamiento, y eso dejó una huella profunda en su obra.

Como es costumbre, quiero compartir un fragmento que me ha marcado especialmente por su delicadeza y honestidad:

“¿Por qué, si el alma siente tanto placer al amar, halla en su mismo anhelo la causa de su penar?”

En estos versos se resume gran parte del espíritu de Milanés, el amor como fuente de gozo pero al mismo tiempo, como origen del sufrimiento. Una idea romántica muy profunda, pero también muy humana y actual.

Releer a Milanés hoy es descubrir que muchas de sus inquietudes siguen vigentes. Esa sensación de no encajar del todo, la tristeza, la búsqueda de sentido y la necesidad de expresar aquello que duele. En estos tiempos donde todo es rápido y ruidoso, esta poesía invita a detenerse, a leer despacio y a escuchar lo que pasa dentro de uno mismo.

El prólogo de Cristian Frías ayuda a comprender mejor el contexto del autor y la importancia de su obra dentro de la literatura cubana. No es solo una antología, es también un acto de rescate y de diálogo entre el pasado y el presente.

Gracias a este tipo de ediciones, Milanés deja de ser un nombre lejano y vuelve a hablarnos con una voz más cercana. El ejemplar que tengo en mis manos corresponde a esta edición conmemorativa de la Editorial Matanzas, la cual constó de solo 1000 ejemplares, terminando su impresión en el mes de julio del 2014. Está editorial constituye una editorial cultural que ha hecho muy buenos trabajos de rescate patrimonial. Es una joya bastante escasa teniendo en cuenta la cantidad de esta edición y yo tengo uno así que me siento afortunado. Leerlo en formato físico, sentir el papel, ver el cuidado editorial y saber que forma parte de un homenaje bicentenario, añade un valor especial a la experiencia. Es un libro que invita a ser leído con calma, sin prisas, como se debe leer la poesía.

Conectar con José Jacinto Milanés es también volver a una parte de nuestra historia literaria, a una sensibilidad que ayudó a construir la identidad cultural cubana. A veces no hace falta mirar lejos para encontrar grandes voces; basta con volver a abrir los libros que nacieron aquí.

Hello, friends of HiveBook Club. Here I am again to continue this journey that I have been sharing through the books that have come into my hands. On this occasion, I want to pause on a work different from the previous ones, but no less profound. After intense novels, adventures, passions, and human conflicts, it is time to return to poetry, and to do so from our own roots.

As I have told you, I am Cuban, specifically from the province of Matanzas, and on this occasion I want to share with you Dawn and Dusk, a poetic anthology by José Jacinto Milanés, published by Editorial Matanzas on the occasion of the bicentennial of his birth.

José Jacinto Milanés is one of those essential figures of Cuban literature who are often not read enough. He was born in Matanzas in 1814 and is considered one of the great poets of Cuban Romanticism.

The work of Milanés is marked by an extreme sensitivity, a deep melancholy, and an introspective gaze that, even today, after so many years, remains moving. This anthology corresponds to a selection made by Cristian Frías, who also wrote its prologue. In it, he proposes a journey through different moments of Milanés’ poetry.

The title of the book, Dawn and Dusk, is not accidental; it alludes both to the stages of his life and to the tones of his writing, from the initial light to the darkest introspection. That is why reading this book is like accompanying a poet through his emotional journey, through his doubts, his longings, and his silences.

We can see that Milanés’ poetry does not shout, nor does it seek to dazzle with artifices. It is rather an intimate poetry, at times fragile, that speaks of love, of faith, of pain, and of solitude. In his verses one can perceive a constant inner struggle, a sensitivity that seems unable to find rest. We know that his life was marked by mental illness and isolation, and that left a deep imprint on his work.

As is customary, I want to share a fragment that has especially marked me for its delicacy and honesty:

In english “Why, if the soul feels so much pleasure in loving, does it find in that very longing the cause of its suffering?”

In these verses, much of Milanés’ spirit is summed up, love as a source of joy but at the same time as the origin of suffering. A very deep romantic idea, but also a very human and current one.

To reread Milanés today is to discover that many of his concerns are still valid. That feeling of not fully fitting in, sadness, the search for meaning, and the need to express what hurts. In these times when everything is fast and noisy, this poetry invites us to pause, to read slowly, and to listen to what is happening within ourselves.

Cristian Frías’ prologue helps to better understand the author’s context and the importance of his work within Cuban literature. It is not only an anthology; it is also an act of rescue and dialogue between the past and the present.

Thanks to this type of edition, Milanés ceases to be a distant name and speaks to us again with a closer voice. The copy I have in my hands corresponds to this commemorative edition by Editorial Matanzas, which consisted of only 1000 copies, finishing its printing in the month of July 2014. This publishing house is a cultural editorial that has done very good work in the rescue of literary heritage. It is a rather scarce jewel considering the number of copies of this edition, and I have one, so I feel fortunate. Reading it in physical format, feeling the paper, seeing the editorial care, and knowing that it is part of a bicentennial tribute adds special value to the experience. It is a book that invites being read calmly, without haste, as poetry should be read.

Connecting with José Jacinto Milanés is also returning to a part of our literary history, to a sensitivity that helped build Cuban cultural identity. Sometimes there is no need to look far to find great voices; it is enough to reopen the books that were born here.
