Almost done with Fathers and Sons by Ivan Turgenev - Eng/Pt

in Hive Book Club2 months ago

I don't even need to wait for the story to end to come here and strongly praise this incredible novel by an author I hadn't known until now. I'm an incorrigible lover of Russian literature, and I find it very difficult for anyone to surpass Dostoevsky, as cliché as that may sound, but I'm slowly giving others a chance. Interestingly, I've only read a few short stories by the great Tolstoy (and yes, I absolutely need to read his classics), I've read some Chekhov, and I've read some Gogol, but I believe that, for now, Fathers and Sons has managed to convey a Russian novel energy that's subtly close to what the writing of the great Dostoevsky evokes in me. Obviously, it's a much lighter sensation—less dark, less dense. Somehow, the bucolic atmosphere woven into the fabric of this journey also reminded me of the unforgettable adventure of Niels Lyhne, a book which I, incidentally, MUST get my hands on as soon as possible, by the incredible and underrated (or rather, unknown) Jens Peter Jacobsen.

But circling back to Fathers and Sons, in essence, the book deals with the conflict of perceiving reality—an issue that is practically timeless and speaks perfectly to our modern day (and perhaps will forever speak) despite the political and ideological nuances and differences of each historical period. I find it quite fascinating to think about how Russian books tend to represent me emotionally much more than the classic literature of my own country (Brazil), and I don't say that happily. Brazil has incredible authors, but perhaps given its size and its sharp changes in reality and culture, it's difficult for me to identify with a North or Northeast (where literature flourished more). Curiously, the Portuguese language in classic Brazilian literature is much more difficult than the Russian language, and I’ve seen many people complain that reading the Russians is hard (translated, obviously, but I'm talking about the way sentences and meanings are constructed, etc.). Anyway, these are details that say a little about me and my preferences. All I know is that I have thousands of books still to read, and I feel like I'm losing time when I’m not devouring them. I hope to catch up in this second half of the journey (of life).

Hello @thomashnblum, it has been a while since we see you write reviews here. So glad you're back here and sharing this with us 😊

That's right! In the midst of so much community (and so much hustle and bustle of everyday life), I ended up forgetting about this welcoming space! I always keep reading, and I always have something good to share, so I'll try to be more present in that sense! Thank you!

Thank you so much for coming back here. We also hosts weekly book chat every Saturday in our Discord server at 12PM UTC. If that time is convenient for you, feel free to join in and talk about your reads during the weekend.

Have a great week ahead!

I really have a hard time fitting anything else into my daily schedule, and I confess I'm not very good with Discord yet (yet, because I always try to adapt), but when possible, I will definitely participate! Can I get the Discord invitation link on your profile? I'll check it out!

The novel would have been so amazing from the way you sound glad you are enjoying every bit of it
