The book begins with Artemisia's childhood, where she learns to paint in the studio of her father Orazio, a well-known and beloved painter who teaches his daughter the secrets of art but also locks her away at home, because the world outside is dangerous, especially for a talented and free-spirited woman. Artemisia lives surrounded by art, but one day her father moves into a house they share with a woman named Tuzia, a house frequented by other artists, models, and workers. Orazio is partly proud of his daughter but also very jealous of her talent and worried about her future, determined to find her a husband at all costs. A woman without a husband was unthinkable at the time. So he hatches a cruel plan that will backfire on him.

In their lives as artists, receiving commissions is essential, and when Orazio isn't drinking, he tries to get as many as possible. Among the artists' friends and buyers is Agostino Tassi, a man who seems to ensnare everyone, from Tuzia to Orazio, but not Artemisia, who immediately detects a certain sliminess in him. Artemisia doesn't know much about men except her best friend (who hides a life of homosexuality) and her father, but she quickly realizes that Tassi is dangerous, and indeed he reveals himself when he takes advantage of her, raping her when she's left alone by her father and Tuzia. Artemisia, overcome by rage and grief, begins drawing Judith, her masterpiece, with the face of her rapist. But Tassi wants to make amends and marry her, until it turns out he already has a wife. To restore Artemisia's lost honor, who absolutely doesn't want to marry her tormentor, a trial is needed where the girl, in addition to being heavily interrogated, will also be tortured. In addition to these events, the book also discusses Artemisia's entire artistic process, which led her to paint controversial masterpieces for a woman, such as Judith or Susanna and the Elders, a strong, vivid, violent, wrathful, and magnificent art.

En sus vidas como artistas, recibir encargos es esencial, y cuando Orazio no está bebiendo, intenta conseguir tantos como sea posible. The book is obviously heavily fictionalized and not entirely historically accurate, but it describes all the key events of Artemisia's life: her childhood in an art studio, the rape, and the trial. The book beautifully describes the condition of this young girl, relegated to painting in secret and hiding her talent, but also her courage in fighting to defend her honor, facing trial, and later becoming a renowned painter paid better than her father. It's a story of growth, of trauma, of a diminished female status, but also of redemption in an era where women's opportunities were truly limited. I really enjoyed this book, with simple descriptions, interesting, and easy to read despite the themes covered. If you love art, history, and female protagonists, I recommend it.

El libro, obviamente, está muy ficticio y no es del todo preciso históricamente, pero describe todos los eventos clave de la vida de Artemisia: su infancia en un estudio de arte, la violación y el juicio. El libro describe bellamente la condición de esta joven, relegada a pintar en secreto y ocultando su talento, pero también su valentía al luchar por defender su honor, enfrentarse a un juicio y, posteriormente, convertirse en una pintora de renombre, mejor pagada que su padre. Es una historia de crecimiento, de trauma, de un estatus femenino disminuido, pero también de redención en una época donde las oportunidades para las mujeres eran realmente limitadas. Disfruté mucho de este libro, con descripciones sencillas, interesante y fácil de leer a pesar de los temas que trata.
