La Casa de los Espíritus by Isabel Allende

Escuché a Isabel Allende y su elocuencia me dejó sentada, queriendo saber más. Busqué la entrevista completa y todavía no logro entender por qué no la había leído. Tal vez sea porque en otro momento de mi vida no hubiera sido capaz de apreciar tan exquisita forma de contar historias.

Era 1982 cuando publicó su primera novela "La Casa de los Espíritus"; yo estaba naciendo. Escucharla decir que este libro, traducido en más de 30 idiomas, siendo el favorito de muchos lectores, está inspirado en los cuentos de su abuelo es maravilloso; y solo basta con empezar a leer para viajar en el tiempo y recordar bellos momentos, aunque el transfondo del recuerdo en esta historia es trágico, político y tormentoso.

Mi abuelo solía decir que en la quebrada del pueblo había un espanto, que se llevaba a los hombres mujeriegos y aparecían ahogados.

Es fantasía, es magia, es imaginación, es literatura.

Yo era adolescente cuando mis abuelos murieron y siento que no pude disfrutarlos de manera consciente; eso le pasó al novio de Rosa, la bella; personajes de esta novela.

I listened to Isabel Allende and her eloquence left me sitting there, wanting to know more. I looked for the full interview and still can't understand why I hadn't read it before. Perhaps it's because at another time in my life I wouldn't have been able to appreciate such an exquisite way of storytelling.

It was 1982 when she published her first novel, The House of the Spirits; I was just being born. Hearing her say that this book, translated into more than 30 languages and a favorite of many readers, is inspired by her grandfather's stories is wonderful. You only have to start reading to travel back in time and remember beautiful moments, even though the backdrop of the story is tragic, political, and stormy.

My grandfather used to say that there was a monster in the ravine of the village that took away womanizers and they were found drowned.

It is fantasy, it is magic, it is imagination, it is literature.

I was a teenager when my grandparents died and I feel that I was not able to enjoy them consciously; this happened to Rosa's boyfriend, the beautiful one, characters in this novel.

Inspirada en "La Casa de los Espíritus" rodaron una película en 1993 dirigida por Bille August; protagonizada por Meryl Streep, Jeremy Irina, Winona Ryder, Antonio Banderas, Glenn Close; también actúa María Conchita Alonso; todos jovencitos y debo decir que la historia está lograda pero ya sabemos que nos vamos a perder el 70% de los detalles del libro y más de la mano del Allende, es que leerlo es escuchar la voz de Isabel, es como si la escucharas hablar y eso hace que el pasar de sus páginas, así sea en digital, se disfruten capítulo a capítulo, son XIV. Son bastante extensos, jugosos, sin pérdidas. Ví esta peli en Netflix por cierto.

Inspired by The House of the Spirits, a film was made in 1993 directed by Bille August, starring Meryl Streep, Jeremy Irina, Winona Ryder, Antonio Banderas, Glenn Close, María Conchita Alonso also appears; all of them young, and I must say that the story is well done, but we know that we are going to miss 70% of the details of the book, and even more so with Allende, because reading it is like hearing Isabel's voice, it's as if you were listening to her speak, and that makes turning the pages, even digitally, enjoyable chapter by chapter, there are fourteen of them. They are quite extensive, juicy, with no losses. I saw this movie on Netflix, by the way.

En 2026 Amazon Prime estrenará una serie sobre esta novela, hay que verla; pues es interesante una puesta en escena con la tecnología de estos tiempos siguiendo el ingenio de la autora chilena de aquel entonces. Además, el rodaje es en Chile y no en Europa como la película.

In 2026, Amazon Prime will premiere a series based on this novel, which is a must-see, as it will be interesting to see how the author's ingenuity is brought to life using modern technology. What's more, it will be filmed in Chile rather than Europe, unlike the movie.

Un día pasé por una librería y pregunté por el libro y pedí permiso para tomarme una foto ja, ja, ja es que como ya dije, lo estoy leyendo en digital y así quiero continuar, porque ya empecé así y la App lo muestra muy agradable a la vista, sólo que voy muy lento porque la descripción de los detalles es tanta que me pierdo imaginando todo y no puedo pasar por pasar páginas sin disfrutar cada palabra. Es exquisito.

One day I stopped by a bookstore and asked about the book and requested permission to take a photo, ha ha ha. As I said, I'm reading it digitally and I want to continue that way, because that's how I started and the app makes it very pleasing to the eye. The only thing is that I'm going very slowly because there are so many details in the descriptions that I get lost imagining everything and can't turn the pages without enjoying every word. It's exquisite.
