In previous posts I talked about The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers, two of the best books ever written. Closing the trilogy that became J. R. R. Tolkien's masterpiece is The Return of the King, an equally epic book since Tolkien only wrote stories worth remembering.
Synopsis
The story is coming to an end. The companies and kingdoms unite in a common goal, which is to defeat Sauron and all those who follow him. Gandalf and Pippin go to Minas Tirith to speak with Denethor. King Théoden heads to Helm's Deep. Then, together with Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas, Merry, Elladan, Elrohir and the Dúnedain, they go to Gondor, although in two groups. Along the way, Aragorn, Isildur's heir, calls on all those who can help in the war.
Denethor is losing more and more of his sanity, while his son Faramir may suffer the consequences. Meanwhile, Frodo, Sam and Gollum head with great difficulty towards Mount Doom, where Sauron lives, where they must sacrifice the One Ring...
This may be an unpopular opinion, but the books that conclude a series are often my favorites. Because everything is almost over, I find the events more exciting because even though there are things left to resolve, everything moves more quickly. This can be counterproductive if you rush things too much, but Tolkien has such an exceptional way of writing that this does not happen in his story.
Somehow he perfectly balances the wealth of detail, the subplots, and the right pace to make this conclusion as exciting as the first books. What's more, having emotionally connected with the characters when you read about each one's fates, it is easy to be moved. Of course you hate the bad guys, so their ending feels satisfying, especially Saruman's being completely humiliated. The good guys, on the other hand, are truly good, so the different paths they take that lead them apart from each other feels bittersweet.
Particularly that of Frodo. Although it ends in a very similar way to that of his uncle Bilbo, it is a little sad to see him end up alone with his thoughts, but honestly there is no better way to close that story. It is a little sad but it is the right way, just as Pipin, Merry and Sam also go their separate ways. Particularly Sam is the one who really has a happy ending, married, with a child and living a quiet life, just what he always wanted. Aragorn, Gandalf, Gimli, Legolas and the rest of the endearing characters also go their own way, because the paths do not always converge with those of the people we love. Sometimes there are people who come together for something specific and then simply leave.
But despite the sadness of the farewells, the truth is that what will truly make this book memorable is the epic battles. There has never been a more exciting war than that of the Ring. All the noble beings united for the same cause, all sacrificing themselves for a greater good, protecting what they love most at all cost. Magic is also not lacking in this story, and we can read about powerful creatures of this world.
Nor should we forget the tortuous journey of Sam and Frodo, who risk everything and suffer different hardships, especially Frodo who must bear the enormous weight of the Ring to which he almost succumbs. Of course, a large part of the story focuses on him and his incredible honor, but I wouldn't say he is the hero, at least not the only one. All together they save the world from Sauron, all contribute something that leads them to victory. However, for me the ones who stand out, who are true heroes, kings in every sense of the word, are Aragorn, Gandalf and Théoden. They have virtues and flaws, there may be decisions they made that may be questionable (especially Théoden's) but none of them are irrational, none of them are impulsive. They are all calculating, sensible and put the greater good above all else. They are the heroes of the story, who with honour and bravery defended their people until the very end.
So in this incredible trilogy we can read about courage, honor, sacrifice, envy, power, good, madness, hopelessness, evil, fear, greed, malice, duty, loyalty, friendship, mortality, love and above all, hope. All this is transmitted through the magic of an epic story, which is unforgettable and I'm sure it doesn't matter if it's not your type of book, if you give it a chance it's almost certain that you'll be completely captivated.
It even tells you about the fruits of perseverance, since constant effort can lead you to achieve things, even if at first you think or really don't have what it takes. Things can be worked on, forged until you achieve them. And it also shows us that courage is not contrary to fear, but that you can be brave and feel fear at the same time, because it implies that you recognize the danger and therefore, you will preserve your life or that which you protect. Not feeling fear would be idiotic.
That's why I won't get tired of recommending this trilogy, which is simply the best story ever written. Taking the time to read it is a decision you will never regret, so if you haven't done so yet, think about it. You could be holding on to what will become your new favorite story.

En post anteriores les hablé de La Comunidad del Anillo y Las Dos Torres, dos de los mejores libros jamás escritos. Como cierre de la triología que pasó a ser la obra maestra de J. R. R. Tolkien, está El Retorno del Rey, un libro igualmente épico puesto que Tolkien sólo escribió historias dignas de recordar.
Sinopsis
La historia está llegando a su fin. Las compañias y reinos se unen en un fin común que es derrotar a Sauron y a todos aquellos que le siguen. Gandalf y Pippin van a las Minas Tirith para hablar con Denethor. El rey Théoden se dirige al Abismo de Helm. Luego junto a Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas, Merry, Elladan, Elrohir y los Dúnedain se van a Gondor, aunque en dos grupos. A su paso Aragorn, heredero de Isildur, convoca a todos aquellos que puedan ayudar en la guerra.
Denethor pierde cada vez más la cordura, mientras su hijo Faramir puede llegar a sufrir sus consecuencias. Por otro lado, Frodo, Sam y Gollum se dirigen con muchas dificultades hacia El Monte del Destino, donde mora Sauron, donde deberán sacrificar al Anillo único...
Quizás esta sea una opinión muy poco popular, pero los libros que concluyen las sagas suelen ser mis favoritos. Como todo está a punto de terminar, los acontecimientos me resultan más emocionantes porque aunque quedan cosas por resolver, pero todo se desarrolla más rápidamente. Esto puede ser contraproducente si se apresura todo demasiado, pero Tolkien tiene una manera tan excepcional de escribir que eso no ocurre en su historia.
De alguna manera equilibra perfectamente el lujo de detalles, las subtramas y el ritmo adecuado para hacer de esta conclusión algo tan emocionante como los primeros libros. Es más, al haber conectado emocionalmente con los personajes cuando lees los destinos de cada uno es fácil que te conmueva. Por supuesto a los malos los detestas, por lo que su final se siente satisfactorio, sobretodo el de Saruman que es completamente humillado. Por su parte los buenos son verdaderamente buenos, por lo que los distintos caminos que toman y los llevan a separarse se siente agridulce.
Particularmente el de Frodo. Aunque termina de manera muy similar a la de su tío Bilbo, es un poco triste verlo terminar solo con sus pensamientos, pero sinceramente no hay mejor manera de cerrar esa historia. Es un poco triste pero es la manera adecuada, así como Pipin, Merry y Sam también siguen sus caminos separados. Particularmente Sam es quien realmente tiene un final feliz, casado, con una niña y viviendo una vida tranquila, justo lo que siempre quiso. Aragorn, Gandalf, Gimli, Legolas y el resto de entrañables personajes también siguen su camino, pues no siempre las rutas convergen con aquellas de las personas que queremos. A veces hay personas que se unen por algo concreto y después simplemente se van.
Pero a pesar de lo triste de las despedidas, lo cierto es que por lo que este libro será verdaderamente memorable es por las épicas batallas. No ha existido una guerra más emocionante que la del Anillo. Todos los seres nobles unidos por la misma causa, todos sacrificándose por un bien mayor, protegiendo lo que más aman hasta con uñas y dientes. La magia tampoco falta en toda esta historia, pudiendo leer sobre poderosas criaturas de este mundo.
Tampoco debe olvidarse el tortuoso viaje de Sam y Frodo quienes arriesgándolo todo sufren distintas penurias, sobretodo Frodo que debe cargar con el enorme peso del Anillo ante el cual casi sucumbe. Por supuesto gran parte de la historia se centra en él y su increíble honor, pero no diría que es el héroe, al menos no el único. Todos en conjunto salvan al mundo de Sauron, todos aportan algo que los lleva a la victoria. Sin embargo, para mí quienes destacan, que son unos verdaderos héroes, unos reyes en toda regla, son Aragorn, Gandalf y Théoden. Ellos tienen virtudes y defectos, habrán decisiones que tomaron que pueden ser cuestionables (más las de Théoden) pero ninguno es irracional, ninguno es impulsivo. Todos son calculadores, sensatos y colocan el bien mayor por encima de cualquier cosa. Ellos son los héroes de la historia, que con honor y valentía defendieron a su pueblo hasta el final.
Así que en esta increíble triología podemos leer sobre valentía, honor, sacrificio, envidia, poder, el bien, locura, desesperanza, miedo, el mal, codicia, malicia, deber, lealtad, amistad, la mortalidad, amor y sobretodo, esperanza. Todo esto se transmite a través de la magia de una historia épica, que es innolvidable y que estoy segura de que no importa si no es tu tipo de libros, si les das una oportunidad es casi seguro que te atrapen completamente.
Incluso te habla de los frutos de la perseverancia, puesto que el esfuerzo constante puede llevarte a lograr cosas, aunque al principio pienses o de verdad no cuentes con lo necesario. Las cosas pueden trabajarse, forjarse hasta conseguirlo. Y también nos demuestra que la valentía no es contraria al miedo, sino que se puede ser valiente y sentir miedo a la vez, porque implica que reconoces el peligro y por tanto, preservarás tu vida o aquello que proteges. No sentir miedo sería de idiotas.
Es por esto que no me cansaré de recomendar esta triología que es simplemente la mejor historia jamás escrita. Darte el tiempo de leerla es una decisión de la que jamás te arrepentiras, por lo que si aún no lo has hecho, piénsalo. Puedes tener entre manos la que será tu nueva historia favorita.
