So, this is going to be a short one. I’m usually drawn to books that is secret lives of anything. Secret lives of Baba Segi’s wives. Secret Lives of Pets. Secret lives of anything and so, it brought me great pleasure to read this book. Because I was sure the drama and secrets will be off the roof. Bonus points because it was just about 150 pages.
The Secret Lives of Church Ladies by Deesha Philyaw
This book with nine different stories explore the lives of Black ladies with Christian backgrounds. Their strengths, weaknesses, vulnerabilities and the various means they dare to set themselves free. They keep getting caught with the almost impossible standards to meet of the Church and who they want to be in the world. Needs, unbridled passions and all.
There’s the story of Lyra who faces insecurities with her bodies and how she constantly lets this comes between her and love. Then there’s the mistress who lays down strict rules for all the married men that coming knocking on her door. And then there’s Jael, who like her namesake in the Bible decides to pick up the sword and take matters into her own hands. These women all have two things in common. The Church and their quest for liberty.
My Thoughts and Ratings
If there’s anyone that knows far too many things about the Church, that would be me. Growing up in a very Christian background made most of the stories of these women relatable to me. Not their lives in particular but the Church acting as a background in all their lives. Now I do agree in the limitations the religion places on many liberties of life. And also the hypocrisy that comes with most of the people who claim to be strict upholders of the faith.
The story I enjoyed the most and melted my heart in some type of way was “How To Make Love To A Physicist.” Reading this particular story was deep as it was true in the sense that a lot of us struggle with self sabotag e. A story that made me laugh and had me smiling at the dexterity with which it was written was that of the mistress who laid down her rules that wanted to have affairs with her and how she had no use for their emotional baggage as she was merely doing this for her sole enjoyment and nothing else. Temerity y’all. Love it!
All of that being said, I love the peace I felt reading this. Somehow when you read the stories of others, just as you immerse yourself in it, their pain, joys and fears, you pick up a lesson or two. And I did pick lessons from the stories of these Black women. Far too numerous to mention. I hope to read more beautiful stories this year that showcase the travails and victories of women as a whole. Giving Secret Lives of Church Ladies a 4.2/5 stars. Delightful short story indeed.

Oh, sounds like a cool book. Having not grown up in a Christian environment and having rarely stepped into a church in my life, I wouldn't have picked this one up. But what I love about you sharing it is that it reminds me to keep looking for books (or movies - basically stories) that tell me something about the lived experiences of others who have lived very different lives than me.
Thanks for sharing, !LUV !!
Oh well, you may have a misconstrued version of the Church if you read this book, but it would give you a bit of an insight into some of the things you face being a part of that space. Always a pleasure to have you here, friend. Have a beautiful week ahead!🥰🥰
I have already seen, heard and read many less-than-pleasant things about the Church. So I don't think it would ruin it for me ;) I have a feeling that within all religious groups, as well as all groups of humans there is good, bad and ugly to be found. But I do like stories and I do like the truth. I really hate it when people pretend to be all perfect and good and saintlike and they're really not.
I prefer it when people say: Hey, I'm human. I'm trying to be kind. I'm trying to do my best. And I'll keep trying to do my best at being a good human. Please give me some grace when I (inevitably) f*ck it up!

This seems to be the biggest issue to many including myself. I started to question some of the practices and culture of the church I'm currently attending and I'm not too happy about them; too rigid and to some extend, cultist.
That's why I believe Christianity as a religion is something of the heart. Not what the minister says to you or makes his congregation believe but what is revealed to you by the Spirit as you study His word.🌺
I agreed, but sadly those with herd mentality would start to persecute and question our choices, deeming we are "unspiritual," "unbiblical," "worldly," and "prideful". If this persists, I might excommunicate myself and go on my own spiritual journey. Church culture does more damage to Christians than anything else.
At this point, I don't think anyone would fault you for doing so. I bet so infuriated at times seeing the kind of things the ministers say or see the things that generally go on there. At the end of the day, your own spiritual journey is what matters. Totally understand your viewpoint, friend.
this is giving premium lover of gists, 😂 I enjoyed reading Secret lives of Baba Segi's wives, it was a light and humorous read, though insightful.
Ever since I read The One who Knows me and The One who Loves me by Joan Embola, I've been wanting to read more books with Christian backgrounds, I'll love to check this out.
Thank you for sharing!
I was looking into getting more acquainted with Christian-inspired novels. They do have some beautiful appeal to them. As for gists, call me anytime, any day, I'll be there!😂
