Hello everyone, fellow reading fans, great Hive Book Club community, I hope you're all doing well. Today I want to share my thoughts on Anxious People by Fredrik Backman. I just finished it and, honestly, I'm still kind of... processing it all, but in a good way. It's one of those books that you close, let out a sigh, and feel like you've just been on an emotional rollercoaster that, in the end, somehow makes you feel... I don't know, a little better. The book is about a lot of things, but as the author himself says, it's a book "about idiots." And honestly, wow, that really hits home! Because you feel so identified. I mean, the premise—get this!—is one of the most ridiculous and brilliant things I've read in a long time. Imagine: a thief, but the most useless thief on the planet, who tries to rob a bank... that's cashless! In desperation, the thief runs out and into the first open door they see, which turns out to be an apartment viewing.

So, out of nowhere, this failed robber ends up holding a group of super-weird strangers hostage the day before New Year's Eve. This setup already prepares you for what's to come: a story that's like a hostage drama mixed with a sitcom, but with a giant, enormous heart. An idea like this could have gone terribly wrong, but in the hands of this genius, Fredrik Backman, it becomes something... pff, magical. And what hooked me from minute one is the perfect balance he achieves. I swear, this book is hilarious; there are moments and dialogues that made me laugh out loud, just like that. And it's not cheap humor, you know? It's super intelligent, very well-thought-out humor, especially the dynamic between two police officers who are father and son... man, it's pure gold!

Seriously, it's a gem. Their arguments and all the underlying affection they have for each other give us the funniest but also the most tender moments in the book. But, and here's the incredible part, amidst all this comedy and lightness, the book throws some really, really tough themes at you: grief, divorce, suicide, addiction, crushing anxiety... And Backman handles them with such tact, with such delicacy... that you never feel down while reading. It's not that he laughs at these things, not at all. On the contrary, he shows you how life, as ridiculous and funny as it can be, simply... goes on. It keeps moving forward despite all that weight.

Hola a todos, amigos fanáticos de la lectura, gran comunidad de Hive Book Club, espero que estén bien, hoy les quiero dar mis opiniones de Anxious People de Fredrik Backman.. lo acabo de terminar y de verdad, todavía estoy como... procesando todo, pero para bien, es de esos libros que cierras, sueltas un suspiro y sientes que te acabas de aventar una montaña rusa de emociones que, al final, de alguna manera te hace sentir... no sé, un poquito mejor.. el libro va de un montón de cosas, pero como dice el mismo autor, es un libro “sobre idiotas”. Y la verdad, ¡uf!, ¡cómo pega eso! Porque uno se siente súper identificado, es que la premisa, ¡escuchen esto!, es de las cosas más ridículas y geniales que he leído en mucho tiempo, imagínense: un ladrón, pero el ladrón más inútil del planeta, que intenta robar un banco... ¡que no tiene dinero!

En la desesperación, sale corriendo y se mete en la primera puerta que ve abierta, y resulta que es la visita a un departamento que están vendiendo.. así que de la nada, este ladrón fracasado termina secuestrando a un grupo de desconocidos súper raros un día antes de Año Nuevo, este arranque ya te prepara para lo que se viene: una historia que es como un drama de secuestro, mezclado con una comedia de situación, pero con un corazón gigante, enorme.. una idea así pudo haber salido terriblemente mal, pero en las manos de este genio, Fredrik Backman, se convierte en algo... pff, mágico. Y lo que me enganchó desde el minuto uno es el balance perfecto que logra, les juro, este libro es para morirse de la risa.. hay momentos y diálogos que me hacían soltar la carcajada en voz alta, así, de la nada. Y no es el chiste fácil, ¿eh? Es un humor súper inteligente, muy bien pensado, sobre todo, la dinámica entre dos policías que son padre e hijo... ¡uff, es oro puro!

De verdad, es una joya.. sus peleas y todo el cariño que se tienen por debajo nos dan los momentos más graciosos pero también los más tiernos del libro, pero, y aquí viene lo increíble, en medio de toda esta comedia y esta ligereza, el libro te suelta unos temas bien, bien duros: el duelo, el divorcio, el suicidio, las adicciones, la ansiedad que te aplasta... Y Backman los trata con un tacto, con una delicadeza... que nunca te sientes bajoneado mientras lees, no es que se ría de estas cosas, para nada, al contrario, te muestra cómo la vida, con todo lo ridícula y graciosa que puede ser, simplemente... sigue. Sigue adelante a pesar de todo ese peso.

And well, this brings me to Backman's writing style. Look, I've read other things by him, and for me, he's one of the best writers out there right now. He just has this gift for telling you stories that seem super simple, super light, and then suddenly, bam! he hits you with some incredibly deep reflections on what it means to be human. He builds these plots that feel super real, but at the same time have a touch of magic. And the characters... the characters are the heart of this story. The group of hostages is like a small sample of society: we have a retired couple who flips apartments to avoid fixing their own marriage; a millionaire banker who couldn't be more unbearable; a lesbian couple about to have a baby with no idea what to do; and an 87-year-old woman who is an incredible character and only goes to viewings to pass the time.

I swear, at first, you want to strangle several of them, they're so unlikable. But Backman, being the master he is, peels back their layers little by little and shows you how vulnerable they are inside. Without realizing it, you go from thinking "what an obnoxious guy" to wanting to protect them with your life. Now, an important heads-up if you're going to read it: like his other books, it takes a little while to get going. The first... what is it, 80 pages? They are a bit slow, introducing a lot of people, opening several storylines, and I was definitely thinking, "Okay, where is this going?". I completely understand if someone gets impatient, but my advice is: be patient, trust the author. Because every little detail, everything that seems to make no sense, is there for a reason. This guy slow-cooks his stories, and I swear, if you pay attention, the payoff at the end is incredible, when all the pieces start fitting together in ways you never expected. It's a book that asks you to be present; if you get distracted, you'll miss a key connection.

Plus, the book is full of these beautiful lines that leave you thinking for days... little truths about life. There's one near the beginning that, for me, sums up the whole story: "Even if I knew the world was going to end tomorrow, I would still plant my apple tree." I mean... wow, that phrase perfectly encapsulates the book's entire message of hope. In the end, the story is a deep dive into what anxiety is, how we overthink everything, how we build walls around ourselves, and how, deep down, we're all desperate for someone to understand us. It's a beautiful exploration of how we connect, reminding us that even though we often feel alone and strange, our lives are constantly touching each other without us even realizing it.

Y bueno, esto me lleva a cómo escribe Backman, miren, yo ya he leído otras cosas de él y, para mí, es de los mejores escritores que hay ahora mismo.. es que tiene este don para contarte historias que parecen súper sencillas, súper ligeras, y de la nada, ¡pum!, te mete unas reflexiones profundísimas sobre lo que significa ser humano. Arma estas tramas que se sienten súper reales, pero que al mismo tiempo tienen como un toquecito mágico, y los personajes.. los personajes son el corazón de esta historia, el grupo de secuestrados es como una pequeña muestra de la sociedad: tenemos a una pareja de jubilados que arreglan casas para no tener que arreglar su matrimonio; un banquero millonario que no puede ser más insoportable; una pareja de chicas que están a punto de tener un bebé y no tienen ni idea de qué hacer; y una señora de 87 años que es un personaje increíble y que solo va a ver departamentos para pasar el rato.

Les juro, al principio a varios los quieres ahorcar, te caen súper mal.. pero Backman, como el maestro que es, les va quitando capas poquito a poquito, y te muestra lo vulnerables que son por dentro, sin darte cuenta, pasas de pensar “qué tipo tan odioso” a querer protegerlos con tu vida. Ahora, un aviso importante si lo van a leer.. como otros libros de él, tarda un poquito en arrancar. Las primeras… ¿qué serán?, ¿80 páginas?, son medio lentas, te presentan a un montón de gente, abren varias historias y yo sí estaba como “ok, ¿y esto para dónde va?”. Entiendo perfecto que alguien se desespere, pero mi consejo es: ténganle paciencia, confíen en el autor.. porque cada detallito, cada cosa que parece que no tiene sentido, está ahí por algo. Este tipo cocina sus historias a fuego lento, y si le pones atención, se los juro que la recompensa al final es increíble, cuando todas las piezas empiezan a encajar de formas que no te esperabas.. es un libro que te pide que estés ahí, presente, si te distraes, te pierdes de una conexión que es clave.

Y además, el libro está lleno de estas frases que son una belleza, que te dejan pensando por días.. pequeñas verdades sobre la vida, hay una casi al principio que para mí resume toda la historia: “Incluso si supiera que el mundo se va a acabar mañana, yo igual plantaría mi manzano”. Es que… ¡uff!, esa frase encapsula perfecto todo el mensaje de esperanza del libro, al final, la historia es un clavado a lo que es la ansiedad, a cómo le damos mil vueltas a todo, cómo levantamos muros a nuestro alrededor y cómo, en el fondo, todos estamos desesperados por que alguien nos entienda.. es una exploración hermosa de cómo nos conectamos, recordándonos que aunque muchas veces nos sintamos solos y extraños, nuestras vidas se están tocando todo el tiempo sin que ni nos demos cuenta.

And the main mystery—I mean, what the hell happened to the thief who seems to have vanished into thin air inside the apartment?—is an incredible driver that makes it impossible to put the book down, making the pages fly by. Plus, Backman has this habit of breaking the fourth wall and speaking directly to you. Suddenly, he'll hit you with a, "You're probably thinking this...," which, honestly, kind of throws you off. I'll be sincere, it's not my favorite thing in a book, but in one that's already so weird, so self-aware, it somehow works here, you know?

It doesn't feel out of place. For all these reasons, I give Anxious People a 4.5/5 stars. It's an almost perfect book, and the only tiny detail, the only "but" I have, is that the beginning is slow and might make some readers a bit impatient. But, people, the emotional weight it carries, the characters that stick with you forever, and that brilliant way of mixing laugh-out-loud moments with a heart-wrenching anguish... make it a must-read. So, who is this book for? Look, if you love stories where the characters are the most important thing, if you enjoy books that make you laugh and cry in the same chapter, and if you're looking for a story that ultimately leaves you with hope, with a desire to live... this book is for you. Y el misterio principal, o sea, ¿qué diablos pasó con el ladrón que parece que se hizo humo dentro del departamento?, es un motor increíble que hace que no puedas soltar el libro, que las páginas se te vayan volando.. además, Backman tiene esta costumbre de romper la cuarta pared y hablarte directo a ti. De repente te suelta un: «Seguro estás pensando esto…», que la verdad, te saca un poco de onda.. a mí, les soy sincero, no es lo que más me gusta en un libro, pero en uno que de por sí ya es tan raro, tan consciente de sí mismo, como que aquí sí funciona, ¿saben?

No se siente fuera de lugar, por todo esto, a Anxious people le doy un 4.5/5 estrellas, es un libro casi perfecto, y el único detallito, el único "pero" que le pongo, es que el inicio es lento y puede que a algunos les desespere un poco.. pero, gente, la carga emocional que tiene, los personajes que se te quedan grabados para siempre y esa forma tan genial de mezclar la risa a carcajadas con una angustia que te cala hasta los huesos… lo convierten en una lectura que sí o sí tienen que hacer.. entonces, ¿para quién es este libro? Miren, si a ustedes les encantan las historias donde lo más importante son los personajes, si disfrutan de esos libros que te hacen reír y llorar en el mismo capítulo, y si andan buscando una historia que al final te deje con esperanza, con ganas de vivir… este libro es para ustedes.. y bueno, hasta aquí todo por hoy amigos, nos veremos en las próximas reseñas, cuidense mucho, byebye!
