I found your description of that specific scene fascinating, where he tries to do something "good" by not dishonoring the girl, and the portrait simply changes his smile to a hypocritical one. What a powerful detail! It makes me think it's a very deep psychological reading, beyond horror or fantasy. I also really liked the connection you made with Oscar Wilde's life and the hypocrisy of the society of his time; knowing that context adds another layer of meaning to the story.
