Hello everyone, fellow fans of good stories, I hope you're doing great today! We meet again today with a new review, dear Hive Book Club community. Today, I'll be giving you my thoughts on: Not in Love by Ali Hazelwood. I went in expecting the classic romantic comedy with female scientists that we love so much from her, but no, no, no... this is a completely different proposition, and I mean that in the best way possible. Many are saying it's her "spiciest" and "deepest" book to date, and after devouring it, I can confirm: it's one hundred percent true. It surprised me, it challenged me, and it's one of those that sticks in your head for a long, long time. The story kicks off with a premise that is pure gossip, pure good drama. We have our protagonists, Rue and Eli, who meet on one of those dating apps that are... well, for what they are for, for one night and that's it, zero "love of my life" complications. The huge problem comes the next day, when Rue, who is a total rockstar chemical engineer, arrives at her job, at her beloved biotech startup, only to find out that the company has just been bought by a larger one.

And guess who the owner of that company is, the new handsome and intimidating millionaire boss? Exactly! The one and only Eli, the guy from the app. So, with that, we have the secret, forbidden, rivals-to-lovers romance served up. The conflict of interest is the foundation of everything, and by the first chapter, I was hooked. And now, let's talk about the characters, because they are the heart of this book. Eli and Rue are super complex and, why lie, they are quite broken inside. Both carry some very harsh childhood traumas, from abandonment to family losses that break your heart, and that has turned them into adults with rather toxic defense mechanisms. This isn't the typical story of two perfect people finding each other. Not at all!

They are two walking disasters, two very closed-off people who are drawn precisely to the darkness they see in each other. Eli is a mega-intense character, one of those who falls first and falls hard, and his devotion to her borders on obsessive, but in a way that, I don't know, just works for the story. And Rue, on the other hand, what a character! She's quiet, fiercely independent, and often uses sex to escape her own feelings, which can sometimes frustrate you as a reader, but it feels so real, so authentic to her. Their relationship is strengthened precisely by that brutal honesty; they show each other their ugliest parts and, instead of running away, they grow closer, finding a strange but super powerful empathy in their shared wounds.

Hola a todos, amigos fanáticos de las buenas historias, espero que estén super bien hoy! Nos vemls el día de hoy, con una nueva reseña, querida comunidad de Hive Book Club, hoy les daré mis opiniones de: Not in Love de Ali Hazelwood, yo entré esperando la clásica comedia romántica con científicas que tanto le amamos, pero no, no, no.. este es una propuesta completamente diferente, y se los digo de la mejor manera posible.. por ahí muchos dicen que es su libro “más picante” y “más profundo” hasta ahora y, después de devorármelo, les confirmo: es cien por ciento verdad, me sorprendió, me retó y es de esos que se te quedan en la cabeza por mucho, mucho tiempo. La historia arranca con una premisa que es puro chismecito, puro drama del bueno, tenemos a nuestros protas, Rue y Eli, que se conocen en una de estas apps de citas que son para… bueno, para lo que son, para una noche y ya, cero rollos de “amor de mi vida”.. el problemón viene al día siguiente, cuando Rue, que es una ingeniera química súper crack, llega a su trabajo, a su startup de biotecnología que ama, y se entera de que la empresa la acaba de comprar otra más grande.

Y adivinen quién es el dueño de esa empresa, el nuevo jefe millonario guapo e intimidante? ¡Exacto! El mismísimo Eli, el tipo de la app. O sea, con eso ya tenemos servido el romance secreto, prohibido, entre rivales.. el conflicto de intereses es la base de todo y yo, para el primer capítulo, me quedé interesado. Y ahora, hablemos de los personajes, porque ellos son el corazón de este libro, Eli y Rue son súper complejos y, para qué les miento, están bien rotos por dentro.. ambos cargan con unos traumas de la infancia durísimos, desde abandono hasta pérdidas familiares que te parten el alma, y eso los ha convertido en adultos con formas de protegerse bastante tóxicas.. no es la típica historia de dos personas perfectas que se encuentran. ¡Para nada!

Son dos caos andantes, dos personas súper cerradas que se sienten atraídas precisamente por la oscuridad que ven en el otro, Eli es un personaje mega intenso, de esos que se enamoran primero y con todo, y su devoción por ella roza lo obsesivo, pero de una manera que, no sé, simplemente funciona para la historia. Y Rue, por otro lado, ¡qué personajazo! Es callada, independiente a morir, y a menudo usa el sexo para escapar de sus propios sentimientos, lo que a veces te frustra como lector, pero se siente tan real, tan auténtico para ella.. su relación se hace fuerte justo en esa honestidad brutal; se muestran sus partes más feas y, en lugar de salir corriendo, se acercan más, encontrando una empatía extraña pero súper poderosa en sus heridas compartidas.

Ali Hazelwood herself warned that this was her spiciest book and, I swear, she was not kidding at all. The scenes, the language... everything is super explicit, much more so than in her previous books. But most importantly, it doesn't feel gratuitous; it's not just there for the sake of it. Imagine this: for two people who are a tangled mess of emotions and don't know how to talk, the physical part becomes their language, you know? It's their way of connecting and being vulnerable when words just don't flow. It's precisely in those moments that we see them heal and grow, as individuals and as a couple. The chemistry between them is insane from the very first page... it's one of those instant, magnetic connections that feels like a force of nature. That undeniable attraction is the engine that drives the story forward with all its entanglements. This book, truly, had my heart in my throat.

It creates tremendous angst because everything at stake feels all too real. The conflicts, both moral and external, give them no rest. Rue has this immense loyalty to her friend and mentor, while Eli is driven by a secret agenda related to his past. You're constantly in suspense, wondering, 'how the hell are they going to get a happy ending when they are literally on opposite sides of a corporate war?!'. And all this is set against a backdrop of a scientific and corporate plot that is super interesting. The whole company acquisition ordeal is filled with secrets and an air of revenge that adds another dimension to the story, going far beyond just the romance.

La misma Ali Hazelwood avisó que este era su libro más picante y, les juro, no estaba bromeando para nada.. o sea, las escenas, el lenguaje... todo es súper explícito, mucho más que en sus libros anteriores, pero lo más importante es que no se siente gratuito, no está ahí nomás porque sí.. imagínense: para dos personas que son un nudo de emociones y no saben cómo hablar, la parte física se vuelve su idioma, ¿me entienden? Es su forma de conectar y de ser vulnerables cuando las palabras nomás no fluyen, es justo en esos momentos que los vemos sanar y crecer, como personas y como pareja. La química entre ellos es una locura desde la primera página.. es una de esas conexiones instantáneas, magnéticas, que se sienten como una fuerza de la naturaleza, esa atracción tan innegable es el motor que hace que la historia avance con todos sus enredos.. este libro, de verdad, me tuvo con el corazón en la mano.

Te genera una angustia tremenda porque todo lo que está en juego se siente demasiado real, los conflictos, tanto morales como los que vienen de afuera, no les dan un respiro, Rue tiene esta lealtad gigante hacia su amiga y mentora, mientras que Eli se mueve por una agenda secreta que tiene que ver con su pasado. Estás todo el tiempo en tensión, preguntándote ‘¡¿cómo carajos van a tener un final feliz si están, literal, en bandos opuestos de una guerra de empresas?!’. Y todo esto con un trasfondo de trama científica y corporativa que está súper interesante.. todo el rollo de la compra de la empresa está lleno de secretos y un aire de venganza que le añade otra dimensión a la historia que va mucho más allá del romance.

And well, as is customary with Ali, her world-building is fantastic. She continues to connect everything in her 'Ali-verse,' with nods and cameos that die-hard fans will love. It makes everything feel so alive and real. For me, the best part was getting to know Eli's friends: Sule, Hank, and Minami. Their dynamic is great, and the book drops some hints that, uff... I need their books like, yesterday! There's even a subplot with Eli's sister that left me super intrigued and which I hope she explores more. Now, if I have to find a 'but,' it would be that Rue's habit of not wanting to feel anything, while realistic, sometimes frustrated me to the point where I wanted to shake her and say, 'snap out of it, girl!'. Maybe some will find the corporate plot twist a bit predictable, but I swear the way she handles the emotional consequences is so well done that you forgive it; I didn't even mind.

So, who is this book for? Look, if you're searching for a super cute and lighthearted romantic comedy, you might want to skip this one. BUT, if you love those romances that make you suffer, are full of drama, with super imperfect characters, chemistry that sparks, and a plot where everything feels life-or-death... folks, you need to run and read it. It's perfect for those who enjoy a story that sits right between contemporary romance and the emotional intensity of New Adult. For all these reasons, I give Not in Love a solid 4.5/5 stars. I'm only docking half a point because I sometimes felt Rue's internal drama slowed things down a bit, but that's a very personal complaint. This book was a super brave and ambitious step for Ali Hazelwood; she took a risk by stepping out of her usual formula, and it paid off beautifully. It's a chaotic, intense, and deeply moving story about two broken people who find a unique and powerful love in the midst of all the mess. And that's it for today's review, take care! Y bueno, como ya es costumbre con la Ali, la construcción de su mundo es brutal.. sigue conectando todo en su 'Ali-verso', con unos guiños y cameos que los fans de hueso colorado van a amar. Hace que todo se sienta súper vivo y real, para mí, lo mejor fue conocer a los amigos de Eli: Sule, Hank y Minami.. la dinámica que tienen es genial, y el libro te va soltando unas pistas que uff… ¡necesito esos libros para ayer! Hasta hay una subtrama con la hermana de Eli que me dejó picadísimo y que ojalá explore más.. ahora, si le tengo que buscar un 'pero', sería que esta manía de Rue de no querer sentir nada, aunque es realista, a veces me frustraba al punto de que me daban ganas de sacudirla y decirle '¡reacciona, amiga!'.. a lo mejor el giro de la trama de la empresa a algunos se les haga un poco predecible, pero les juro que cómo maneja las consecuencias emocionales está tan bien hecho que se lo perdonas, a mí ni me importó.

Entonces, ¿para quién es este libro? Miren, si andan buscando una comedia romántica súper cute y ligerita, mejor pasen de largo. PERO, si a ustedes les encantan esos romances que te hacen sufrir, llenos de drama, con personajes súper imperfectos, una química que saca chispas y una trama donde todo se siente de vida o muerte... gente, tienen que correr a leerlo.. es perfecto para los que disfrutan de una historia que está justo en medio del romance contemporáneo y la intensidad emocional del New Adult, por todo esto, yo a Not in Love le doy un sólido 4.5/5 estrellas. Le bajo ese medio puntito nada más porque los dramas internos de Rue a veces sentí que frenaban un poco la cosa, pero es una queja muy personal.. este libro fue un paso súper valiente y ambicioso de Ali Hazelwood, se arriesgó a salirse de su fórmula de siempre y le salió de maravilla.. es una historia caótica, intensa y súper conmovedora sobre dos personas rotas que encuentran un amor único y poderoso en medio de todo el desmadre.. y hasta aquí la reseña de hoy, cuidense!
