They have been days of a long and sad absence due to the unexpected problems that a Venezuelan student may have. However, now with the skates well on and with much more free time, I have returned to tell you about a book that undoubtedly captivated me both in its history written on paper and in its adaptation to the cinema. I am talking about the unforgettable The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, a novel of the dramatic genre that narrates, from an unexpected perspective, the terrible consequences of the Holocaust.

Les hablo del inolvidable El niño con el pijama de rayas, una novela del género dramático que narra, desde una perspectiva inesperada, las terribles consecuencias del holocausto.

The Second World War was an event that changed the history of the world. Literature was part of this process of political and war conflicts. Much of the drama of some books was based on showing this fateful rift that shook our society, showing the most despicable face of war and death. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas bases its warlike premise under the eyes of innocence, and, unlike other works of this genre, bases its message with an unprecedented fact: "the hatred of a few is the suffering of many"

La segunda guerra mundial fue en evento que cambió la historia del mundo. La literatura fue parte de este proceso de conflictos políticos y bélicos. Gran parte del drama de algunos libros se basó en mostrar está fatídica grieta que sacudió nuestra sociedad, mostrando el rostro más despreciable de la guerra y la muerte. Boy in the Striped Pajamas is a story that deals with the life of Bruno, the son of a ruthless Nazi general in charge of a fearsome concentration camp. Far from his home and surrounded by unknown lands of barbed wire, Bruno meets Shmuel, a nice little boy with a peculiar striped pajamas with whom he ends up forming a cute friendship. Beyond the games and the innocent laughter, both Bruno and Shmuel are unaware of the terrible danger that their friendship contains, and that will end up condemning them to the worst portrait that Nazi history has been able to leave in all time.

El niño con el pijama de rayas es una historia que aborda la vida de Bruno, el hijo de un general nazi despiadado encargado de un temible campo de concentración. Lejos de su hogar y rodeado de tierras desconocidas de alambradas, Bruno conoce a Shmuel, un pequeño niño agradable con una peculiar pijama de rayas con el que termina entablando una linda amistad. Más allá de los juegos y las risas inocentes, tanto Bruno cómo Shmuel desconocen el terrible peligro que encierra su amistad, y que terminará condenándolos al peor retrato que la historia nazi ha podido dejar en todo los tiempos.

The story is short, some even say that the same author wrote it in one day. At first glance it seems like a children's book, since its tender narration takes us into the side closest to the childhood of its two protagonists. This is precisely what attracted me most to Boyni's novel, since by mixing deep themes from the perspective of two children, it adds a nostalgic, sadly captivating and wonderfully unexpected touch to the work in its fullness. In addition, the war scene helps a lot to harden the reading, turning it into a static reflection of hatred, racism and supremacy.

La historia es corta, incluso algunos dicen que el mismo autor la escribió en un día. A primera vista parece un libro infantil, pues su narración tierna nos adentra en el lado más cercano a la infancia de sus dos protagonistas. Precisamente, es esto lo que me atrajo más de la novela de Boyni, ya que al mezclar temas profundos bajo la perspectiva de dos niños le da un toque nostálgico, tristemente cautivador y maravillosamente inesperado a la obra en su plenitud. Además, el escenario bélico ayuda mucho a endurecer la lectura, convirtiéndola en un estático reflejo del odio, el racismo y la supremacía.

Such is the narration of the events, that at some point you think that you are in front of a children's story, but under a context for adult thought and reflection. A child does not know about the bonds of enmity, he only wants to share and raise his happiness without caring about race, or color, or perhaps belief. This is how Bruno and Shmuel are the clearest example of the power of the heart; for true friendship there are no ideological barriers.

Es tal la narración de los hechos, que en algún punto piensas que estás frente a un cuento para niños, pero bajo un contexto para el pensamiento y la reflexión adulta. Un niño no conoce sobre los lazos de la enemistad, solo desea compartir y enarbolar su felicidad sin importarle la raza, o el color, o quizás la creencia. Es así como Bruno y Shmuel son el ejemplo más claro del poder del corazón; para la amistad verdadera no existen barreras ideológicas.

It was a book that I really enjoyed after watching the movie. I could say that the film adaptation was partly faithful to the Novel, but if it comes to choosing, I'll take the second one. If you want to venture alongside Bruno and Shmuel, then you must read this great story by John Boyne. Without a doubt, he will take your breath away.

Fue un libro que disfruté muchísimo después de mirar la película. Podría decir que la adaptación al cine fue en parte fiel a la Novela, pero si de elegir se trata me quedo con la segunda. Si deseas aventurarte junto a Bruno y Shmuel, entonces debes leer esta gran historia de John Boyne. Sin duda, te dejará sin aliento.
