📖Review: Anathema (The Eating Woods #1) by Keri Lake🕯️🌑 [Eng][Esp]

As I mentioned in my Reading List for October and November, during these months I've been in the mood to read everything gothic, dark, and supernatural that I can find, with autumnal vibes included. Books that make me want to snuggle up in my blankets, drink a strong cup of coffee, and be afraid of the dark. So Anathema came into my hands at the perfect time: a book released in 2024 that has been the talk of the literary community🍂

And honestly, what can I say? Anything with witches, dark fantasy, and enchanted forests tickles my heart. This book promised exactly that, and let me tell you... the first few pages already had my heart racing. A tension while reading that lasted until the end.

Como ya mencioné en mi Lista de Lectura para Octubre y Noviembre, durante estos meses he estado en modo leer todo lo gótico, oscuro y sobrenatural que encuentre, con vibes otoñales incluidas. Libros que me hagan querer arroparme en mis mantas, tomar un buen café cargado, y tener miedo a la oscuridad. Así que Anathema llegó a mis manos en el momento perfecto: un libro estrenado en 2024 que ha estado dando de qué hablar en toda la comunidad literaria🍂

Y, honestamente, ¿qué puedo decir? Todo lo que tenga brujas, fantasía oscura y bosques encantados me hace cosquillas en el corazón. Este libro prometía exactamente eso, y déjenme decirles… las primeras páginas ya me tenían con el corazón a mil. Una tensión al leer que se mantuvo hasta el final.

En el temido Bosque Voraz solo los locos o los desterrados se atreven a entrar; pero Maevyth quien se enfrenta a horribles rumores que la tachan de bruja y tragedias familiares, se ve obligada a cruzar el arco de huesos que marca la entrada a este temible lugar. ¿Qué hay más allá? From the very first pages, Anathema makes it clear that this is not a light read. We're talking about a deeply developed world, with its own glossary of terms, a section on races, gods, and creatures. And, of course, a map of every corner of the place. If you're someone who enjoys getting lost in a new universe (I am), these kinds of details are pure gold: they allow you to travel and take refuge completely, far from reality✨

But beware, this is not a “sweet” or romantic fantasy. It is a cruel, bloody, and ruthless world, where every creature, every legend, every corner of the Eating Woods and Aethyria breathes danger. Sometimes it is necessary to stop, take a breath, and check the glossary so as not to get lost among so much information, but believe me... it is totally worth it. Every detail reinforces the feeling that this world is not a fairy tale: it is a lethal, cold, and brutal place.

Ojalá me dieran un dólar por cada novela en dónde la protagonista es obligada a cruzar un portal entre el mundo mortal a un mundo de fantasía mientras es perseguida por una bestia.

Desde las primeras páginas, Anathema deja claro que no es un libro ligero. Estamos hablando de un mundo profundamente desarrollado, con su propio glosario de términos, yun apartado para razas, dioses y criaturas. Y, por supuesto, su mapa de cada rincón del lugar. Si eres de las que disfrutan perderse en un universo nuevo (yo sí lo soy), este tipo de detalles son oro puro: te permiten viajar y refugiarte completamente, lejos de la realidad✨

Pero ojo, no es fantasía “dulce” ni romántica. Es un mundo cruel, sangriento y despiadado, donde cada criatura, cada leyenda, cada rincón del Bosque Voraz y de Etiria respira peligro. A veces es necesario detenerse, tomar aire y revisar el glosario para no perderse entre tanta información, pero créeme… vale totalmente la pena. Cada detalle refuerza la sensación de que este mundo no es un cuento de hadas: es un lugar letal, frío, y brutal.

Maevyth begins her journey by entering a forest full of mysteries and death, a place where witches were once sacrificed and whose boundaries still hide many human remains. Getting out alive is nothing short of a miracle. And, honestly, I can't blame her for preferring to risk facing demonic creatures rather than surrendering to the strict life of the Red Hoods... a group of nuns with their tongues cut out, which, according to rumors, is not exactly a spiritual paradise. Furthermore, her sensitivity is evident at different moments, such as when she finds a dying crow: crying, burying it, and moving on, trauma included, shows her emotional strength and humanity, even in such a cruel world.

Maevyth inicia su travesía adentrándose en un Bosque lleno de misterios y muerte, un lugar donde antiguamente sacrificaban brujas y cuyos límites aún esconden muchos restos humanos. Salir con vida es más que un milagro. Y, sinceramente, no puedo culparla por preferir arriesgarse entre criaturas demoníacas antes que entregarse a la vida estricta de las Tocas Rojas… unas clases de monjas con la lengua cortada, que, según dicen, no es precisamente un paraíso espiritual. Además, su sensibilidad queda patente en diferentes momentos como cuando encuentra un cuervo agonizante: llorar, enterrarlo y seguir adelante con trauma incluido muestra la fuerza emocional y humanidad que tiene, incluso en un mundo tan cruel.

With so much Rhysand, so much Xaden, so much Kingfisher, and all those dark, mysterious, powerful protagonists, it's no surprise to see another one like that. Zevander Rydainn fits that same stereotype. And don't get me wrong, I love those guys with all my heart, but you already have an idea of what the patterns are for this protagonist. However, I want to highlight something Maevyth says: “I felt so small and safe by his side. It was as if nothing and no one could touch me.” Wow, that part, those vibes, is what I love most about these characters, the security and devotion they give the protagonist. It's something all these protagonists share, and Zevander has it.

And we can't forget Rykaia and Branimir, Zevander's siblings. They are a small representation of how cruel and ruthless Aethyria can be. Branimir hurt me, yes, he hurt me a lot 😢 Each one brings that sense of danger and moral gray area that keeps the story tense and exciting, reminding us that not everything is pretty magic or sweet romance.

Con tanto Rhysand, con tanto Xaden, con tanto Kingfisher y todos esos protagonitas oscuros, misteriosos y poderosos, ya no sorprende otro más así. Zevander Rydainn entra en ese mismo estereotipo. Y no me malinterpreten, yo amo a esos tipos con todo mi corazón, pero ya tienen una idea de cuales son los patrones de este protagonista. No obstante, quiero resaltar una parte que Maevyth comenta: "Qué pequeña y segura me sentía a su lado. Era como si nada ni nadie pudiera tocarme". Ufffsss, esa parte, esas vibras, es lo que más amo de estos personajes, la seguridad y devoción que dan a la protagonista. Es algo que comparten todos estos protagonistas, y Zevander lo tiene.

Y no podemos olvidar a Rykaia y Branimir, los hermanos de Zevander. Son una pequeña representación de lo cruel y despiadado que puede ser Etiria. Branimir me dolió, sí, me dolió mucho 😢 Cada uno aporta esa sensación de peligro y moralidad gris que mantiene la historia tensa y emocionante, recordándonos que no todo es magia bonita o romance dulce.

There's something that's been bothering me lately about romantasy: I feel like they're becoming saturated with spicy content. I mean, if the spicy stuff appears every other chapter, it stops being shocking. That's why, when I got to Anathema, I was grateful. Here, Keri Lake achieves something that seems simple but few manage to do: balance. There's tension, there's desire, there's that spark that makes you hold your breath, but everything is where it should be, no more, no less.

It's well narrated and justified. There's no vulgarity, no scenes forced in to “raise the temperature” of the book. Here, everything has a purpose and consequences. And best of all, it's not just about the physical moment, but also everything that surrounds it: the looks, the touch of hands, the words left unsaid, and the tension that builds chapter after chapter until... well, it explodes.

Hay algo que últimamente me ha pasado con los romantasy: siento que se están saturando de contenido spicy. O sea, si el spicy aparece cada dos capítulos, ya deja de ser impactante. Por eso, cuando llegué a Anathema, lo agradecí. Aquí, Keri Lake logra algo que parece sencillo pero pocos consiguen: equilibrio. Hay tensión, hay deseo, hay esa chispa que te hace contener la respiración, pero todo está donde tiene que estar, ni más ni menos.

Está bien narrado y justificado. No hay vulgaridad, ni escenas metidas a la fuerza para “subir la temperatura” del libro. Aquí todo tiene propósito y consecuencias. Y, lo mejor, es que no se trata solo del momento físico, sino también de todo lo que lo rodea: las miradas, el roce de manos, las palabras que no se dicen, y la tensión acumulada capítulo tras capítulo hasta que… bueno, explota.

Anathema was an intense, dense, and cruel read, but in the best way possible. It took me out of my comfort zone and reminded me why I love dark fantasy so much: because it doesn't treat you gently. No one here is completely good; everyone carries their shadows, and that makes the book feel alive, twisted, and real.

Did it have its slow parts? Yes. Did it leave me confused at times? Also yes. But honestly, I much prefer a book that makes me think, that forces me to take notes, that makes me flip back pages, to one that reads automatically. Keri Lake built a complex and bloody world that left me wanting to continue discovering it.

Anathema fue una lectura intensa, densa y cruel, pero en el mejor sentido. Me sacó de mi zona de confort y me recordó por qué me gusta tanto la fantasía oscura: porque no te trata con delicadeza. Aquí nadie es completamente bueno, todos cargan sus sombras, y eso hace que el libro se sienta vivo, retorcido y real.

¿Tuvo sus partes lentas? Sí. ¿Me dejó confundida en algunos momentos? También. Pero sinceramente, prefiero mil veces un libro que me haga pensar, que me obligue a anotar cosas, que me haga regresar páginas, antes que uno que se lea en automático. Keri Lake construyó un mundo complejo y sangriento que me dejó con ganas de seguir descubriéndolo.
