Faceless Book Review.

It feels like I just got a huge load off my neck. Reading books is like a work I give to myself so that I can ease off some stress and this is the main reason why I always make it compulsory to read at least three books in a month.
I feel satisfied now after reading Faceless by Amma Darko.

My friends who love to read recommended this book to me because I’m someone who loves to fight for people and I once lived on one of the toughest streets of Lagos. I know how living on the streets can be. Having nowhere to sleep, living a rough life just to survive as well. That’s why my friend, Rebecca recommended this book to me.

Plot

Truly, I know I love to read anything about living on the streets or having to fight for people but this got me more emotional than I thought.
The story begins with a girl of fourteen years old, named Fofo who sleeps on an old cardboard in one of the biggest markets in Accra. The slum or marketplace is as popular as Sodom and Gomorrah and she always wish to live a better life especially live in a house that has a toilet inside it.
That fourteen year old girl has always slept on the streets so there was no idea that she knows that there are houses with toilets inside them.
The story was becoming more interesting because I felt it was awkward for someone not to have a toilet in their house and was even sleeping on the streets and I got deeper into the story.
Fofo’s mother, Maa Tsuru called to tell her that her older sister, Baby T was killed and dumped on the refuse land. Fofo was warned to leave for safety but she was hurt by her sister’s death and decided to take avenge.
What can a fourteen year old girl do and how can she even take avenge? I wondered.
Eventually, Fofo was able to locate some group of women who ran documentation for an NGO group with the help of her friend, Oderly. She narrated to them everything including the death of her sister and the findings began. It was revealed that a street lord called poison was responsible for the death of Baby T and was arrested.
Fofo was able to live well again just like a little child should. After I read the story, I felt relieved. I could have cried more if Fofo still didn’t get a better life but I’m glad she did and those who killed her sister were arrested.

This book for me is a very emotional one and brings me back to a video I once watched online about how those who live in slums survive. It’s a crazy world. It made me cry because it hurts to see a girl of fourteen going through such and I’m pretty sure that there are even other younger kids going through such.

I’m glad I could complete the two hundred and thirty six pages of this book. The first page itself has a very good introduction that will make you wonder why Maa Tsuru is a single mother of six children. That’s a lot.

The book is an emotional one but the end part made me happy. It’s giving hope to other street kids. But what if some of them still spend the rest of their lives like the previous Fofo? It’s possible, right but I’m happy Fofo has the chance to live a better life again.

I was able to read this book within three days and it was worth the read.
