Hello friends and book lovers! đ
I hope you are all doing very well.
At the moment, I am not very diligent about writing reviews. But recently, I read a book that deserves one: Verity, written by Colleen Hoover.
I have read a few other books by this author, and each time, I have the same feeling: Well-crafted and captivating stories. I have never been disappointed.
Verity is a psychological thriller. And if you've read my book reviews before, you know that I'm particularly fond of psychological thrillers that turn your brain inside out.
I had heard a lot about this book, and it had been on my list for a while. So, when I finally had the opportunity to read it, I did not hesitate. And honestly, I loved it! đ
Synopsis
Verity immerses us in the life of Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling author who is recruited to finish writing a famous novelist's series. Indeed, Verity Crawford, the famous novelist, was the victim of a serious accident and is unable to continue her successful series.
Lowen will therefore immerse herself entirely in Verity's universe, to get as close as possible to her writing style. And for that, she will move in with Verity and her husband to write the sequel.
While searching through Verity's papers, Lowen discovers a manuscript that looks like an autobiography and reveals dark and frightening secrets about Verity and her family.
As Lowen progresses in her research, she begins to have doubts and become suspicious of Verity.
Additionally, Verity's husband Jeremy becomes an increasingly intriguing character, and Lowen finds herself caught in a spiral of mystery, manipulation and disturbing revelations.
What I thought of this book
Without suspense, I really loved my reading! đ
The plot is gripping and that from the first pages. The mystery surrounding Verity and this famous manuscript really captivated me. I never knew who to trust, and that's what I like about thrillers. This "unspoken" side, where we wonder if the truth is really what it seems to be.
The characters are complex and well-built, especially Verity's. But I especially liked Lowen's character, even if I sometimes had trouble understanding some of her decisions. At the same time, she is plunged into such a troubling situation that we can't really anticipate her reactions. I have asked myself several times how I would react in these situations and I didn't have the answer.
I sometimes felt fear and apprehension about Verity's character. Colleen Hoover knows how to choose the right words to make you feel strong emotions.
The book explores some pretty dark themes: manipulation, motherhood, and toxic relationships.
Besides, some passages in Verity's manuscript are quite disturbing / confusing and I didn't expect that at all. But that brings real depth to the story.
However, the ending left me a little perplexed. Without spoiling, let's say that it is open to interpretation and that we are left with a lot of questions. On the one hand, I like it, because it makes you think. But on the other hand, I would have liked to have more answers.
My rating
4.5 / 5 â
It's really an excellent thriller, well constructed, with a plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat. And enigmatic characters as we like them. The story turns your brain inside out, as you would expect with a psychological thriller.
But, I'm not giving it 5 stars, because I was expecting another ending. In fact, I'm left wanting more!
In short, if you haven't read this book yet and you like psychological thrillers, I highly recommend it!
And if you have read it, what did you think of it? đ
See you soon,
Johanna

Johanna

Is it safe to say that Collen Hoover is the new JK Rowling just in different genre? I saw her works all over and it's extremely popular. I read her works a long time ago but just couldn't bring myself to finish them. I am sure someone over here is a fan of her đ
That I don't know ahah! It's too bad, but it's normal that her books aren't to everyone's taste. I'm not a fan, but I must admit that so far I've never been disappointed. đ Thanks for your comment! đ
Verity! I remember reading this book at night. When I read the part that she left one of the daughters to die, I was spooked. It was as if I imagined the child to realityđ. I really enjoyed reading Verity. It toyed with my mind so muchđ
A very beautiful review you've written. I'm glad I got to read it.
I totally agree with you, it's easy to put yourself in the characters' shoes, even in the scary scenes! And feel the emotions. Thanks for reading and commenting on my review, I'm really glad you liked it! đ
I love your review of "Verity". It's obvious that you were hooked from the beginning, and that's what we look for in a good psychological thriller. I understand your frustration with the open ending, sometimes we want a clearer ending.. Greetings, good post!
Yes absolutely, I think I prefer clearer endings, I don't like to be left in the dark, I'm too curious for that ahah! đ€Ł Have you read Verity? Thanks for your comment! đ
