I much prefer reading the memoires of the ordinary soldiers, they were often written for their grandchildren while the more senior officers were usually writing to further their political careers. This is one of the best I've read, although it's definitely a case of reading between the lines in a few places - some of his amorous exploits definitely seem glossed over 😁
