Vimazolu... ¿qué? || Vimazolu.... what? #Chronos

Allí, debajo del puente que sirve de extensión a la avenida Libertador, a la altura de la plaza Los Museos, suena la música y se ven personas con atuendos estrafalarios. Un ir y venir de gente, como si fuera un hormiguero, llama la atención de todos los que transitan la zona. Son cuarenta y cinco actores, además de los músicos y el equipo técnico.

Aunque Levy Rossell, el director, es casi un niño, la propuesta teatral es tan interesante, que cantidad de actores de renombre, de amplia carrera en teatro, cine y televisión, se han incorporado al elenco. Mi mamá, Malú del Carmen, es una de ellas y debido a lo novedoso en la concepción del espectáculo, cuando mi madre se presentó a los ensayos conmigo y con mi hermana @helyorsini, Levy nos incluyó, y yo, con mis escasos seis años de edad, pasé a ser el actor más joven de “Vimazoluleka”.

Las expectativas en toda la ciudad crecían con cada nuevo ensayo, pues en toda la zona del parque Los Caobos se escuchaban las canciones que conformaban el soundtrack de la pieza. Pero es que ver a esa cantidad de actores corriendo por el improvisado escenario debajo del puente, los gritos, las risas, las canciones, era toda una novedad, en aquella Caracas de 1966.

Las personas se acercan al espacio, miran un rato, toman fotos, conversan con los actores. Los ensayos se volvieron un atractivo de la ciudad.

Una trama moderna, irreverente, crítica, un tanto hippie (si se quiere), con elementos del pop art, en contra de la guerra, de las falsas poses, del interés material predominando en una sociedad que clama una transformación de valores. Ese es el marco en el que se desenvuelven los personajes principales, la prostituta, el conserje, el banquero y toda la fauna de la sociedad caricaturizada, en la obra escrita, dirigida y conceptualizada por aquel muchacho de 16 años, que sin saberlo marcaría un hito en la historia del teatro venezolano.

También la promoción del evento, una vez se fijó la fecha de estreno, es una novedad. Largas caravanas de carros, con todo el enorme elenco a bordo, lazando volantes por la ciudad, acompañadas de las canciones que para tal fin compuso el hermano del director, Alexis Rossell, sonaban a todo volumen por las calles por donde circulaban y por donde iban regando sonrisas y alegrías entre los transeúntes y vecinos.

El estreno de Vimazoluleka es tal como se esperaba. Aquello es la locura y la gente no para de comentar, las funciones se agotan una tras otra y todos los medios (incluso aquellos no especializados) tienen su reseña. Lo único que fue corto en aquel megaespectáculo, fue mi presencia y la de mi hermana. Pues la gobernación consideró inapropiada la presencia de menores de edad en una pieza bastante subida de tono y ordenaron la exclusión de nuestros personajes. Apenas un par de funciones pudimos Hely y yo ser parte de esa experiencia, que quedó en boca de todos y en los anales de la historia.

Luego del estruendoso éxito en Caracas, una temporada en las salas de Nueva York y una película, 40 años más tarde, son parte del aporte que dejó Levy Rossell para la historia cultural de nuestro país. Y un nombre que sigue resonado en las bocas de muchos, con la misma interrogante de siempre: ¿qué significa “Vimazoluleka”?

There, under the bridge that serves as an extension to Libertador Avenue, at the height of Los Museos square, music plays and people in outlandish attire can be seen. A coming and going of people, as if it were an anthill, attracts the attention of all those who pass through the area. There are forty-five actors, in addition to the musicians and the technical crew.

Although Levy Rossell, the director, is almost a child, the theatrical proposal is so interesting that a number of renowned actors, with extensive careers in theater, film, and television, have joined the cast. My mother, Malú del Carmen, is one of them. Due to the novelty in the conception of the show, when my mother showed up for rehearsals with me and my sister @helyorsini, Levy included us, and I, at my scarce six years of age, became the youngest actor of "Vimazoluleka".

Expectations throughout the city grew with each new rehearsal, as the songs that made up the soundtrack of the piece could be heard all over Los Caobos Park. But seeing that number of actors running around the improvised stage under the bridge, the shouts, the laughter, the songs, was a novelty in that Caracas of 1966.

People approached the space, watched for a while, took pictures, and talked with the actors. The rehearsals became an attraction in the city.

A modern, irreverent, critical, somewhat hippie (if you like) plot, with elements of pop art, against war, against false poses, against the material interest prevailing in a society that cries out for a transformation of values. That is the framework in which the main characters, the prostitute, the janitor, the banker, and all the fauna of the caricatured society develop, in the play written, directed, and conceptualized by that 16-year-old boy, who unknowingly would mark a milestone in the history of Venezuelan theater.

The event's promotion, once the premiere date was set, was also a novelty. Long caravans of cars, with all the enormous cast on board, throwing flyers around the city, accompanied by the songs composed for this purpose by the director's brother, Alexis Rossell, were blaring through the streets where they drove and where they were spreading smiles and joy among passers-by and neighbors.

The premiere of Vimazoluleka is as expected. There is madness and people do not stop commenting, the performances are sold out one after another and all the media (even the non-specialized ones) have their reviews. The only short thing in that mega-show was my presence and that of my sister. The city government considered inappropriate the presence of minors in a rather racy piece and ordered the exclusion of our characters. Hely and I were only able to be part of that experience for a couple of performances, which remained on everyone's lips and in the annals of history.

After the thunderous success in Caracas, a season in New York theaters and a film, 40 years later, are part of the contribution that Levy Rossell left to the cultural history of our country. And a name that continues to resonate in the mouths of many, with the same question as always: what does "Vimazoluleka" mean?
