Heterotextual [Esp-Eng]

Soy heteretextual. Todas las noches me voy a la cama con un libro distinto. Uno así termina por amar cualquier género y a esta promiscuidad debo la dicha de ser feliz.

Soy heterotextual, porque mi atención se orienta hacia historias distintas, hechas de textos sosegados, textos violentos, textos tristes, textos que ahondan en el alma. Un ensayo, un cuento, una crónica periodística, una poesía… nada es indiferente a mi condición, porque la heterotextualidad no es innata en sí misma, sino que se adquiere.

He conocido a quienes solo son capaces de amar un determinado género, su zona de confort y, si bien se permiten una que otra fantasía, vuelven siempre al mismo tipo de libro. Sorben, una y otra vez, de una savia común. Estos son, claro está, los seres homotextuales.

También he visto lectores flexibles, educados bajo paradigmas literarios precisos; regímenes que no les impiden considerar lo divertido de las letras a la vez que los inclinan por una que otra lectura distinta a la acostumbrada. Aman sin remordimientos ni ascuas de infidelidad. No son lectores infieles; simplemente reconocen en ellos una orientación ambivalente.

El pantextual, en cambio, devora todo lo que en encuentra en la marcha. Entiéndase por todo la buena y también a la cuestionable (por no tildar de mala) literatura. Posee un líbido imparable que lo hace echar a mano de cuanto le atraiga sin importarle su calidad.

Este tipo de lectores viven en una felicidad alienada, imperturbable. Saben que son pantextuales y lo aceptan. No permiten críticas a su persona. No podemos calificarlos de malos lectores, pues lo mismo leen un clásico que a un escribidor.

En esta diversidad lectora vivo y me muevo yo, el heterotextual. No impongo ni me vanaglorío de mi naturaleza: la acepto con gratitud, afortunado de ser el lector que soy.

Siempre trato de inclinar a otros hacia mi condición, de contagiarles con ella. A veces lo logro; otras, no. No pretendo “reformar” lectores: en cuestión de gustos, no manda el intelecto.

Lo importante, claro está, es saber respetar a cada quien. Borges dijo que amar los libros es una alternativa a la felicidad y a nadie se le puede obligar a ser feliz. Después de todo, el acto de leer no difiere mucho del sexo: se disfruta en la intimidad personal, sin tabúes de por medio y siempre por el placer de hacerlo.

I am heterotextual. Every night I go to bed with a different book. Someone like that ends up loving every genre, and I owe my happiness to this promiscuity.

I am heterotextual because my attention is drawn to different stories, made up of calm texts, violent texts, sad texts, texts that delve into the soul. An essay, a short story, a newspaper article, a poem... nothing is indifferent to my condition, because heterotextuality is not innate in itself, but acquired.

I have met people who are only capable of loving a certain genre, their comfort zone, and although they allow themselves the occasional fantasy, they always return to the same type of book. They sip, again and again, from a common source. These are, of course, homotextual beings.

I have also seen flexible readers, educated under precise literary paradigms; regimes that do not prevent them from considering the fun of literature while inclining them toward the occasional reading that is different from the usual. They love without remorse or pangs of infidelity. They are not unfaithful readers; they simply recognize in themselves an ambivalent orientation.

The pantextual, on the other hand, devours everything in its path. By everything, I mean both good and questionable (not to say bad) literature. They possess an unstoppable libido that makes them reach for whatever attracts them, regardless of its quality.

These types of readers live in an alienated, imperturbable happiness. They know they are pantextual and accept it. They do not allow criticism of themselves. We cannot label them as bad readers, since they read classics as well as pulp fiction.

I, the heterotextual, live and move within this diversity of readers. I do not impose or boast about my nature: I accept it with gratitude, fortunate to be the reader that I am.

I always try to sway others toward my condition, to infect them with it. Sometimes I succeed; other times, I don't. I don't try to “reform” readers: when it comes to taste, intellect does not rule.

The important thing, of course, is to know how to respect everyone. Borges said that loving books is an alternative to happiness, and no one can be forced to be happy. After all, the act of reading is not so different from sex: it is enjoyed in personal intimacy, without taboos, and always for the pleasure of doing so.

I am heterotextual, and this is my way of facing life.
