Año nuevo
La gente mira el reloj, faltan cinco para las doce y el año va a terminar. Las risas van de boca en boca y la alegría es la reina de la noche. Las familias se unen en un solo jolgorio, esperando el fin de un año que se va, muere el tiempo dando paso al nuevo año, que viene con nuevas experiencias, cambios, retos y crecimientos personales.
La música en alto volumen ameniza el momento, mientras las parejas danzan entre melodías pegajosas y algunas melancólicas. No hay espacio para la tristeza, todo es felicidad. Los niños corren por la casa, jugando y riendo por cada resquicio del hogar, en tanto, los mayores preparan todo para recibir el nuevo año.
Los muñecos del año viejo, hechos de paja y ropa vieja, se alistan con pólvora para que exploten al terminar el año. El muñeco del año viejo se irá entre explosiones, tristezas y lágrimas, cuando el reloj marque la doce. La ciudad se llenará de ruido estrambótico, y humo blanco, que se llevará al cielo todo lo malo y lo bueno del año que termina.
Mientras llega el momento anhelado, la gente se sigue alistando, lucen trajes nuevos y cortes de pelo de última moda. Algunos alistan los agüeros de fin de año: los calzoncillos amarillos, las doce uvas que deben comer, tener trigo en el bolsillo para abundancia, correr con una maleta por el barrio para poder viajar en el nuevo año y muchas más, que se han forjado en la creencia popular.
El vino y el alcohol se hacen presentes en el jolgorio. Las cosas bailan de una mano en otra, ayudando a los festejantes a desahogar las penas y fracasos que deja el año viejo. El alcohol desinhibe a las personas y las vuelve más cordiales y gratas, al punto de compartir como hermanos con aquellos que apenas conocen.
La noche sigue su curso, mientras la gente festeja los últimos minutos del año, que se extingue como la llama de una vela. Después de una copa más, un baile más, las campanas de las iglesias empiezan a sonar estruendosamente. Los hombres corren rápidamente a prender al muñeco de año viejo, los tienden sobre las vías de la ciudad y comienza el espectáculo más estrambótico e impresionante, para despedir el año viejo que se va, que muere para nunca más existir.
Las mujeres y hombres se abrazan, se besan y dirán una frase que durante las próximas horas, bailará de boca en boca, «¡Feliz año nuevo!», entre padres e hijos, hermanos, primos, tíos, abuelos, amigos, esposos, novios y extraños. Todos se unirán en un solo abrazo y buenos deseos para un nuevo año, que llega como un recién nacido, lleno de esperanzas y expectativas, nunca con pensamientos negativos, sino con una fe casi infinita por el mejoramiento de las cosas, las relaciones, la economía, la salud, la paz, la unión y la prosperidad.
Luego de aquellas costumbres y tradiciones que son parte de creencia de cada persona, el ambiente vuelve a ser de felicidad y jolgorio. La música vuelve a sonar más fuerte, con ese entusiasmo del los primeros minutos del nuevo año. La familia sigue reunida en el calor del hogar, festejando la fecha más importante en el calendario, festejando el fin y el inicio de una nueva época, la muerte hacia lo viejo y una resurrección como el ave fénix hacia lo nuevo, lo inesperado.
Después de varias horas, la gente se va retirando para descansar después de tanto festejo. Las primeras luces del nuevo año van acompañando a los cansados festejantes, para que se entreguen a los nuevos sueños que surgen en el candor de un nuevo tiempo.

New Year
People look at their watches, it's five minutes to midnight and the year is coming to an end. Laughter spreads from mouth to mouth and joy reigns supreme. Families come together in a single celebration, waiting for the end of the year that is passing, time dying and giving way to the new year, which brings new experiences, changes, challenges, and personal growth.
Loud music enlivens the moment, while couples dance to catchy and sometimes melancholic tunes. There is no room for sadness, only happiness. Children run around the house, playing and laughing in every corner, while the adults prepare everything to welcome the new year.
The old year dolls, made of straw and old clothes, are prepared with fireworks to explode at the end of the year. The old year doll will leave amid explosions, sadness, and tears when the clock strikes twelve. The city will be filled with bizarre noise and white smoke, which will carry all the bad and good of the ending year to the sky.
As the long-awaited moment approaches, people continue to get ready, wearing new clothes and sporting the latest hairstyles. Some prepare their New Year's Eve superstitions: yellow underwear, the twelve grapes they must eat, wheat in their pockets for abundance, running around the neighborhood with a suitcase so they can travel in the new year, and many more that have been forged in popular belief.
Wine and alcohol are present at the revelry. Things dance from one hand to another, helping the revelers to vent the sorrows and failures left behind by the old year. Alcohol disinhibits people and makes them more cordial and pleasant, to the point of sharing like brothers with those they barely know.
The night continues as people celebrate the last minutes of the year, which fades away like the flame of a candle. After one more drink, one more dance, the church bells begin to ring loudly. Men rush to light the old year's effigy, lay it on the city streets, and begin the most bizarre and impressive spectacle to bid farewell to the old year that is passing away, dying to never exist again.
Women and men hug and kiss each other and say a phrase that will be repeated for the next few hours: “Happy New Year!” between parents and children, siblings, cousins, uncles, grandparents, friends, spouses, boyfriends, and strangers. Everyone will come together in a single embrace and good wishes for a new year, which arrives like a newborn, full of hopes and expectations, never with negative thoughts, but with an almost infinite faith in the improvement of things, relationships, the economy, health, peace, unity, and prosperity.
After those customs and traditions that are part of each person's beliefs, the atmosphere returns to one of happiness and revelry. The music plays louder again, with the enthusiasm of the first minutes of the new year. The family remains gathered in the warmth of the home, celebrating the most important date on the calendar, celebrating the end and the beginning of a new era, the death of the old and a resurrection like the phoenix to the new, the unexpected.
After several hours, people begin to leave to rest after so much celebration. The first lights of the new year accompany the tired revelers, so that they can surrender to the new dreams that arise in the candor of a new time.
