Today for this architecture entry, we will take a walk
I will introduce you to the city center, its heart, its old buildings and a bit of history.
It's sunday and the day is good
We move to 700 years ago when the city was not a city and the 7 streets were made up of walls and three streets.
Don Diego López de Haro was the lord of Vizcaya.
The old town was the area dedicated to merchandise, where merchants sold their treasures brought from far away.
Today dedicated to small shops, bars and, of course, great restaurants.
A wall and various towers would surround that Bilbao until almost the year 1500.
Today those walls do not exist and the streets began to be added one after another, all with special names of the guilds that were dedicated to the same merchandise.

At the rear of its buildings was integrated the wall that surrounded the First Bilbao and that measured 6 meters high and two wide.
We could say that the old town began there, but it was not there but in the church of San Antón.
This is where I have walked my life as a Christian.
It may also be that the love for the Gothic comes from there since it is his style.
Built in the 15th century, where a market of fluvial articles used to be located
It was a construction with a single nave, a rectangular floor plan and a vaulted roof.
Her interior always seemed a bit bare to me, but she is great in her smallness.

But before all that she was always important to believers and non-believers.
With the bridge that she has at her feet and she herself forms the shield of my city.
You can see that the stones of it are very damaged by the passage of centuries, the water that runs next to it and some floods that we had years ago.

In 1983 it was the great flood and this building is next to the river so you can imagine how it was.
It was the biggest natural catastrophe in our city
But they renewed it and is now a benchmark for the fresh produce market and bars where you can eat all the variety of food you can imagine.
I leave you a map so that you can locate yourself.
Shallow formerly dedicated to warehouses.
I remember when I was little that it was the coldest street in Bilbao and where they kept bananas and all the merchandise that needed cold.
Nowadays the bar area and the poteo that is what we call to meet friends and have a drink.
In the center of the old town.
You enter through some arches going up some stairs
There we find a large square with its arches, also in a neoclassical style, jajá classics like us with the food, the Pintxos and the bars.
Built in the 19th century, an area of 3,400 meters and it was inaugurated in 1851
All surrounded by half pointed arches, 18 arches on two of the sides and 15 on the remaining two.
The material was ashlar stone and golden sandstone.
Formerly it had a garden in the center, but now it has a parking lot on its ground floor that was incompatible with the gardens, so a recreation area was created that we are all grateful for and of which you have already seen many photos.
But I leave you the atmosphere of this Sunday.

More than a walk, it could be said that in my house you have made me open the trunk of memories and lose myself again through those wonderful streets, full of flavor and tradition, in whose structure that millenary medieval distribution is still noticed, whose streets , inevitably flow into the cathedral. The traditional market, next to the Ría, how could it be otherwise, as a prelude to that church of San Antón whose foundations, as you know and because they are partly discovered, are of pre-Romanesque origin and as old as the first settlements. In addition, it is a walk through the history of architecture, where not only those old medieval relics are appreciated, but also that modernist style that caused a sensation in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Thank you very much for such an extraordinary tour.
Feliz semana juankar
You know that I am proud of my city and it is a pleasure to teach it to you again.
You are right about San Antón and it is the most emblematic church.
Where I have had all my Christian life in it and where I have to go one of these days, he owed a candle to mistress and a prayer.
But let's leave the sad and have a Pintxo with a good txakoli and let's toast to a good trip
Happy week juankar

How beautiful is the city! It's like living in art and culture. The colours all around, the historic exteriors with all those mouldings, cornices etc the fascinating streets with pathways. Even the markets are beautiful. How interesting it would be to live in a place like this!
@txatxy keep on sharing your wonderful works of photography and experiences.
Hello
Hahaha I guess your city is also beautiful and will have its interesting things.
I love mine and I suppose it is reflected in the entries.
I hope you have a nice week
Hello friend. It's with great pleasure to be introduced to the heart of your beautiful city center of Bilbao! If I'd be strolling along the historic streets of your metropolis, I'd definitely take my time, immerse in the cultural heritage, and absorb all the interesting stories behind the remarkable architectural landmarks it has to offer. I'm glad to see that the urban commercial areas there are opening up despite the strict restrictions of the pandemic. Wish you the best of health and take care always @txatxy!
Hi friend @storiesoferne
Here the trade has been open for a long time, almost everything.
This area that I have presented to you since the pandemic is a bit sad, as it is a traditional trade, many have had to permanently close other stores that have been transformed for tourists and souvenirs.
But overall for those of us who know the area it is a bit sad, people no longer go out so happily to the streets
I always tell you that you would have great moments and that after seeing concrete architecture, you would taste food architecture haha.
That if you would carry a few extra kilos on your belly haha
Happy week
Oh yeah, eating real food outside in social areas and restaurants is definitely a happy routine. But for now, let's just fill our stomachs with virtual architecture haha. It's simply better to be safe than sorry. Have a great week!
Well done @txatxy! We're happy to inform you that this publication was specially curated and awarded the GOLD MARK in Architecture Brew #31. Congratulations!

Hi @txatxy The virtual tour of your city was beautiful and set a desire within me of exploring the city. The lovely streets with those people playing music, I could feel the happiness and enjoyment through that picture. The architectural aspect of the city is so heart warming and beautiful.
What a commendable publications.
Have a great week:)
