RUMAH LIMAS (LIMAS HOUSE)

Some time ago, when I talked about the ulu house from South Sumatra, I said there that there are three types of typologies in the houses of traditional houses in this province, right? Well, this time, I want to talk about another type of house from South Sumatra. What I'm really excited about is that this house looks very luxurious while at the same time not being left behind with its Indonesian characteristics. What makes this traditional house look so charming? Let's talk about the architecture of Rumah Limas (Limas House)

RUMAH LIMAS

When I took a landscape photo of the whole model of Limas house, maybe someone failed to focus because the model looks like houses in Central Java. Yep! Houses in Central Java are also called limas houses. Because indeed the roof of this house is pyramid-shaped. However, this Limas house from South Sumatra is in the form of a stage, and is full of golden yellow carvings. Speaking of stilts, this limas house with a multi-storey floor is called bengkilas by them.

Usually, the owner of the house will only welcome guests on the terrace. The terrace of this house is also very long, so it is possible to receive up to dozens of guests. What about the main room of this house? It is opened only if there is a traditional ceremony or celebration, usually on the third floor. The residents of the house only occupy the second floor and terrace.

DOMINATION AND MIXING OF YELLOW, AND RED COLOURS THAT GIVE A LUXURIOUS FEEL

I took a close-up photo so that you can see the details of the colour combination and carvings that cover almost all parts of the fence, doors, high pillars, and stairs.

All the carvings of this part of the house seem to have been deliberately made uniform. The first time I saw it, the impression that immediately left in my head was: This is probably the house of a wealthy person in the province, or an influential person such as a regional official... Considering how big and how intricate the details of this house are. But, don't worry, I didn't have any sources to back up my thoughts. LOL.

The chandeliers used are usually still in the traditional form as shown in the picture. Right up to the roof, the red and golden yellow coloured fences are still faithfully bordering the terrace. Don't forget, even the ceiling is made of wood.

Actually, the fashion; this house, is no longer found in the area of origin, but that does not mean it has completely disappeared. However, there is a funfact that you should know, this pyramid house model is actually still found in neighbouring Malaysia, especially in the Johor, Selangor and Terengganu areas. Not that they plagiarised or took our culture, no!

Information board

However, because Indonesia and Malaysia are truly allied countries and many of our citizens are then in the three areas I mentioned above.
Then, according to my tour guide, because the size of the house is five, the yard is usually large. So, indirectly, it takes a lot of land to build a limas house.

What if you have a large and empty land, not to mention thinking of building a house, are you interested in making a model like limas house ? It will definitely attract the attention of local residents, especially if you are not in South Sumatra. Hihih... I imagine it's very unique.

Finally, thank you for reading my review on the architecture of rumah lima. Please stay tuned for my other house reviews! May you always be happy and healthy!

Indonesia is certainly a hotbed of tribal architecture evident in her traditional houses - exhibiting her diverse design influences over the years. Red and gold seem to be the dominant colors of Limas House, oozing with an Oriental impression. ☺️

Wow... I totally agree about the gold and red colors that give an oriental impression. I wonder if this is influenced by East Asian cultures. I wonder about its history further.

Thank you for your comment and stopping by @archmoments 👍🏾

The house is large and beautifully decorated, the creativity of the builders is admirable, a great work of art in every detail.

Greetings!

Hi, @belkyscabrera thank you for the commenting. Agree with tpu, this house model so large and beautiful.

Have a nice day, dear

Amazed at their architectural skills. Awesome! They could make such a beautiful traditional house at that time.

Agreed. That's why I'm also impressed with Indonesian wood craftsmen and architects.

It turns out that in ancient times, houses like this had already considered what would happen if a flood occurred.😍

That's why I'm amazed by designer, they think hard for prevention efforts. Also, the amazing nature that presents sturdy woods.

Wow! Despite being a typical house on stilts, the Limas House took it to the next level by enhancing its ornamental details, promoting the cultural heritage of the local tribe. Amazing! ☺️

However, this Limas house from South Sumatra is in the form of a stage.

Why is this so @titisnariyah?

Oh I' am sorry, that means House on stilts. My bad. I'll be more careful next time,Erne. Thank you

Oh no worries. Do you mean that this house is also called a stage due to the stilts that elevate it?

Yup, you really got me. :D

I see. Thanks for clarifying and for promoting this incredible house! ☺️

Please don't get bored if my reviews are more about traditional houses. your support means a lot🙏🏽 ☺️

Not boring at all. It's actually a great privilege and opportunity to be aware about Indonesia's indigenous architecture - especially her fascinating traditional houses. We look forward to more @titisnariyah! ☺️
