Grinziger Friedhof [Grinzing Cemetery]
Located at An den langen Lüssen 33, 1190 Vienna
We had the opportunity to visit Oma Lisi´s grave and that of my mom in-law´s the other week located in this cemetery, the Grinzinger Friedhof. I also took the chance to photograph a few of the Mausoleums and crypts in the cemetery. As they say, this is a noble cemetery because this became the resting place of famous people. I am astonished as to how these buildings were preserved especially some of them are almost two centuries old. The history of this is that the land areas and extensions were mostly donated by affluent people. According to history, the cemetery opened in 1830 when the first burials took place.
Right to have a Grave
The fact is that, one cannot purchase any grave in Austria. The deceased will only have a temporary right of use for as long as the grave site fee is paid by the family. It´s normally contracted for 10 years and can be extended for as long as the family takes care on and on and on. When the grave site fee is no longer paid after notifications, the grave will be opened and the remains of the deceased will be moved to a general resting place.
However, the old mausoleums and crypts in Grinzing Cemetery have special historical value and therefore could not be demolished because they are protected. The Cemetery is also the resting place for many important and known people from various fields such as in Music, Arts, Theater, politics, science, philanthropy, etc. There is also a tour to view graves of famous people for a fee and this is done by some tour agents.
Mausoleum and the Corinthian Columns
This mausoleum here from the Badl Family, was fully designed with a glimpse of the Gothic style architecture with all those trimmings on the roof as well as the ceiling. Gargoyles are placed above the columns, their purpose of which is to gather the rainwater from the roof passing thru the mouth of each figure. Take note of the four Corinthian columns designed with the acanthus leaves on top of each pillar.
There are three principal types of columns under the Greek Order which have been developed in ancient Greece and were popularly used by the Romans too. They became so popular that they have incorporated these columns of buildings constructed during the Rennaissance period. But in the modern world, the best example of building that is fully designed with the Corinthian columns is the United States Capitol. For more details on the three main types of columns you can refer to an article here.
I find the Corinthian columns more elegant. And if you´re specifically interested about the Corinthian Columns, you can find more details in this article.
The Grave Chapel Weil [Below]

Grave chapel Weil at the Grinzinger cemetery in the 19th district of Vienna Döbling.
The funeral chapel with cubic-graceful forms and an obelisk crowned with the figure of Victoria was built in 1877. Buried in it was the Grinzing wine wholesaler, municipal councilor, honorary citizen and benefactor Karl Weil (1819-1877).
Freiherr Gustav von Seenuss, 1833 - 1926
That is a cool architectural design that would last long through the test of time, here in PH you see homeless people dwelling inside the mausoleum, find it funny and a bit scary, lol!
Yep they are, bring us back to the past century and into the new world. Thanks. Under the crypt of the St. Michael´s Church in the 1st District , the caskets of the mummies are opened for public to see. They are centuries old intact mummies.
Vienna has a mixture of architecture in various periods and styles and even to the construction of the mausoleum. Love the details.
Yeah, I love Viennese architecture, they almost cover the most important phases of architecure here.
How are you dear friend @mers good afternoon
Mausoleums always caught my attention, although they are of different construction styles, what I like is the dedication to the small details that enhance the aesthetics of the buildings
I appreciate you sharing these beautiful images and information
have a beautiful afternoon

Lol, well, I had to do a bit of research on who is who in this cemetery. We are lucky that grandma Lisi provided for a resting place for the family in the `50s.
Hello @mers. The Grinziger Friedof is definitely an architectural landmark to behold! Not only do people get to pay respects to their dearly departed but also grab the opportunity to immerse themselves in the grandeur of artistic masterpieces. Since many famous individuals have been laid to rest there, it must have been a tremendous honor also for ordinary citizens to be buried with society's elite. Thank you for showing us this important heritage from Austria! 😊
Thank you so much for the lovely words Erne. Yes, grandma was quick and was lucky to have gotten a place in the 1960s.
Wow its very beautiful architecture, i really love to see the details every buildings and looks so classy, Is this located in a public cemetery?
There is no private cemetery in Austria... it is not like in other countries where you can buy a plot. Yes, this is kind of public cemetery but you need to acquire a burial space long before already. I think the cemetery is full atm.
Thanks for sharing this very interesting collection of Mausoleums I will definitely visit this cemetery next time I’m in Vienna. 👏
Yeah, do come again and visit our city and this cemetery.... It´s a so pleasantly quiet place to think of their history surrounding their passing away. Thanks for visiting.

What a variety of styles and designs in these mausoleums. All with a peculiar beauty. Quite an attraction for the enjoyment of locals and visitors, despite the actual usefulness of the place.
This is the most striking graves in my opinion . Great post
Appreciate that you like the mausoleums , I like them too. The diversity of styles as well as constructions made them special... not to mention that in those days, the one who had these built are wealthy and most had something to do with buildings and public works. Thanks for visiting.
I shot a movie in this cemetery, I was very impressed by these mausoleums.
I really liked you detailed post.

Hello @mers
The Crypts seems in great condition and they are truly interesting and scary at the same time. we donot have such in our country , maybe very rare or non existent. I have seem plenty of them in horror films.
But they are actually very unique and is a nice symbol to remember the passed aways.
Hi @sahiba-rana
Thanks for dropping-by. The cemeteries in Vienna are very special and the best place to build a house beside its border. A lot of people live in its surroundings . It is the most quiet area in every town and for those who are scared, they must be watching plenty of horror films, lololols!
