Hello friends of Archtecture & Design!
Today I want to tell you about one of the largest shopping complexes in Cuba, Plaza Carlos III. In my country, there are not many big shopping malls, so we are very proud of this place. Last July 2nd, my son's birthday, I went with him to look for some sport shoes that he loves. We had planned this outing since the day before, as I wanted to make sure he found shoes that were comfortable for him.

Hoy quiero hablarles de uno de los complejos comerciales más grandes de Cuba, la Plaza Carlos III. En mi país no hay muchos grandes centros comerciales, así que estamos muy orgullosos de este lugar. El pasado 2 de julio, día del cumpleaños de mi hijo, fui con él a buscar unas zapatillas deportivas que le encantan. Habíamos planeado esta salida desde el día anterior, ya que quería asegurarme de que encontrara unas zapatillas que le resultaran cómodas.
The complex is located on Carlos III Avenue, hence its name, and was remodeled in 1997 and has a modern structure. The facade is very nice, but it is difficult to photograph it due to the numerous trees on the avenue that cover it if we move away. Above the main entrance the wall is covered with mirrored panels and a work of art by the great Cuban plastic artist, Alfredo Sosabravo Palenzuela, in the center. At the top of the facade in large letters is the name of the complex, as you can see it is always very busy but I was able to capture it to show you.
El complejo está situado en la avenida Carlos III, de ahí su nombre, y fue remodelado en 1997 y tiene una estructura moderna. La fachada es muy bonita, pero es difícil fotografiarla debido a los numerosos árboles de la avenida que la tapan si nos alejamos. Sobre la entrada principal la pared está cubierta con paneles de espejos y una obra de arte del gran artista plástico cubano, Alfredo Sosabravo Palenzuela, en el centro. En la parte superior de la fachada en letras grandes está el nombre del complejo, como pueden ver siempre está muy concurrido pero pude captarlo para mostrárselos.
There is a large portal, along the entire exterior that has metal structures that adorn the facade with a series of very colorful red beams that serve as columns and are covered with silver metal slats that make them stand out more. The exterior walls are lilac or light purple and gray, and the floors are made of deep blue ceramic tiles that cover the base of the columns. All of this gives a very pleasant, striking and cheerful look to the large complex of stores.
To the right of the entrance is a drop-off to a children's theater, but I was only able to photograph the entrance because it was closed.
Hay un gran portal, a lo largo de todo el exterior que tiene unas estructuras metálicas que adornan la fachada con una serie de vigas rojas muy coloridas que hacen función de columnas y están recubiertas con listones metálicos plateados que hace que resalten mas. Las paredes exteriores son de color lila o morado claro y gris, y los suelos son de baldosas de cerámica azul intenso que cubren la base de las columnas. Todo ello da un aspecto muy agradable, llamativo y alegre al gran complejo de tiendas.
A la derecha de la entrada hay una bajada a un teatro infantil, pero sólo pude fotografiar la entrada porque estaba cerrado.
The center occupies an entire block, being the parallel streets Retiro and Árbol Seco and at the back it borders Enrique Barnet Street, in the municipality of Centro Habana. It has four floors and a circular spiral shape. The upper floors can be reached through side corridors that, like ramps, border the different specialty stores.
El centro ocupa toda una manzana, siendo las calles paralelas Retiro y Árbol Seco y por la parte trasera linda con la calle Enrique Barnet, en el municipio de Centro Habana. Tiene cuatro plantas y forma de espiral circular. A los pisos superiores se accede por pasillos laterales que, a modo de rampas, bordean las diferentes tiendas especializadas.
All the stores have glass facades, although all of them are different, allowing you to see inside them. At the four corners of the mall there are stairs that allow you to go up to the upper floors without having to go all the way around the ramps. This design is very functional, since from any angle you can get a panoramic view and locate the store you want to visit.
Todas las tiendas tienen fachadas de cristal, aunque todas son diferentes, lo que permite ver su interior. En las cuatro esquinas del centro comercial hay escaleras que permiten subir a las plantas superiores sin tener que dar toda la vuelta a las rampas. Este diseño es muy funcional, ya que desde cualquier ángulo se puede obtener una vista panorámica y localizar la tienda que se desea visitar.
On the first floor there is a central area where there used to be lots of children running around and fast food for sale that could be consumed at the little tables placed all over the place. Now, after the pandemic, everything is less lively and empty, although there are still several children's apparatuses from which the children climbed up and down. There are lamp stores, lingerie, perfumery, boutiques, household appliances, sundries and toys, a bit of everything! From the second floor up to the ceilings, there are red beams very similar to those on the facade, which by their arrangement seem to support the roof. At the top, there are extractor fans that keep the store cool, as it does not have central air conditioning.
En la primera planta hay una zona central donde solía haber muchos niños correteando y comida rápida a la venta que se podía consumir en las mesitas colocadas por todas partes. Ahora, tras la pandemia, todo está menos animado y vacío, aunque sigue habiendo varios aparatos infantiles desde los que subían y bajaban los niños. Hay tiendas de lámparas, lencería, perfumería, boutiques, electrodomésticos, artículos varios y juguetes, ¡un poco de todo! Desde el segundo piso hasta los techos, hay vigas rojas muy parecidas a las de la fachada, que por su disposición parecen sostener el tejado. En la parte superior, hay extractores que mantienen la tienda fresca, ya que no dispone de aire acondicionado central.
Walking through this store is always very entertaining. The interior is dominated by red, which is a color of strength, passion and emotion, I think it is done on purpose because this color activates the senses and makes you want to eat haha, so nothing more appropriate to stimulate you to buy fast. I really like to stop and observe all the round aisles through which visitors move and those big beams, it seems to me a work of engineering very well achieved in its purposes. Formerly the gastronomic offer was quite wide, now almost nonexistent, although there are still some refreshment stands and a hamburger bar on the second floor.
The shopping center has a parking lot with a ramp where you can get in and out of the vehicles. In the parking lot, there is a very small but charming little store called "El Laurel" that emanates a delicious aroma. In this store you can find different types of spices to season your food. From the parking lot you can access the store through the back.
Pasear por esta tienda siempre es muy entretenido. En su interior predomina el rojo, que es un color de fuerza, pasión y emoción, creo que está hecho a propósito porque este color activa los sentidos y dan ganas de comer jaja, así que nada más apropiado para estimularte a comprar rápido. Me gusta mucho pararme a observar todos los pasillos redondos por los que se mueven los visitantes y esas grandes vigas, me parece una obra de ingeniería muy bien conseguida en sus propósitos. Antiguamente la oferta gastronómica era bastante amplia, ahora casi inexistente, aunque todavía quedan algunos puestos de refrescos y una hamburguesería en la primera planta.
El centro comercial cuenta con un estacionamiento para autos que tiene una rampa por donde se pueden subir y bajar los vehículos. En el estacionamiento, hay una tiendita muy pequeña pero encantadora llamada "El Laurel" que emana un aroma delicioso. En esta tienda se pueden encontrar diferentes tipos de especias para sazonar la comida. Del parqueo se accede a la tienda por la parte posterior.
At the sports shoe store, my son found the tennis shoes that fit him, and we were able to buy him his birthday present. Both my husband and I were very happy to oblige. It was a nice morning where we were able to enjoy this tour together. See you soon friends.
En la peletería deportiva, mi hijo encontró los tenis que le acomodaron, y pudimos comprarle su regalo de cumpleaños. Tanto mi esposo como yo estábamos muy contentos de poder complacerlo. Fue una mañana agradable donde pudimos disfrutar juntos de este recorrido. Hasta pronto amigos.

La primera vez que fui era una niña pinareña, incapaz de imaginar la existencia de un complejo tan suntuoso. Mi madre y yo llegamos a la planta superior sin ser concientes de ello, pues caminamos entretenidas por la rampa, deslumbradas ante tanta diversidad de ofertas.
