Inside the Home of an Expat

in Architecture+Design2 years ago (edited)

I've said it many times now - I probably sound like a broken record. But here we go again, my wife and I are moving back to Canada. Our three year expat adventure has come to an end. I wish I could say that I was excited to be going back but in truth we really love Europe. If only our family and friends were here, and I had the ability to work in a meaningful profession. But anyway,

Who wants to see inside our home?!?

I know that you're curious so I took some photos just for you fellow Hivers.

Actually, I thought I'd take some photos of it for memory sake, but since I have them I may as well share them. Am I right!?

I already miss the privacy of our walls

What would you do if you were given a limited amount of free money to furnish your house for two years? *Two years was our initial timeframe by the way, which later turned into three.

Backyard Terrace

Well, you would probably go to Ikea!

Pretty much all of our furniture and accents are from Ikea. It's cheap and easy to assemble and it wasn't possible to bring much of our own furniture or personal items across the ocean, so Ikea it was. We only brought the essentials in a cargo plane (i.e clothes, bedding, cookware, and some games and books among a few other things).

The exposed beams give the house a cottagey sort of look and feel.

Other Space we Hardly Use

The house is actually too big for just two people but our options were limited and since we were bringing our pets with us we were adamant that we wanted to have a backyard. This place just made the most sense for us overall. It was much better than the home with the 3 inches of water in the leaking basement, and certainly better than the home that we nicknamed the "Death House," on account of it appearing to be a haunted mansion.

Upstairs Bathroom

I regret taking apart our bed before I could take a photo. It's not quite the same, viewing an empty room as it is viewing one with a bed and proper furnishings in it. But what can you do?

Bedroom One

20220830_155401~2.jpg

On that note, we had to toss our mattresses out a few weeks ago because there is only one "Big garbage Day" per year in our small town and that was our only way to get rid of them. As such, we have been sleeping on an air mattress and our fold out couch for some time now.

20220831_151819~2.jpg
Bedroom Two

There are three other bedrooms upstairs as well as the two already shown - 5 in total.

20220830_155130~2.jpg

One we turned into an office. Another one we turned into a large walk in closet for my wife 💃 and the last we turned into a room dedicated only to the cat littler box 😸😂. Like I said, it's way too much space for us, but what can you do when you fly across the ocean a few months before your move and only have 1 week to find a place to live in?

20220830_154006~2.jpg
Shower Room 1

The bathrooms are super strange in this house. I'm obviously used to it by now but when we first got here I was really trying to make sense of it all. On the main floor there is a 2 piece bathroom (i.e. a toilet and sink) and upstairs their is a 4 piece bathroom (i.e. a toilet, sink, bathtub and shower). That all makes sense. From there it gets a little wonky though. Upstairs there is a closet size room with just a toilet in it but no sink, which is neither efficient or hygenic since you have to walk to a different room to wash your hands or skip the activity altogether. The master bedroom and that office room I showed you above have a shower and sink in them, but no toilet. Most shower rooms have a toilet in them in Canadafor efficiency of space and plumbing so it's what I'm used to. It's different here, I get it. This set up is functional anyway, in that people can shower even if the toilet is in use. However, it means that people who use the common toilet have to walk down the hall to the other bathroom to wash their hands which makes that toilet redundant, or they need to walk through someone else's bedroom, which is less than ideal and certainly an annoyance if its used in the middle of the night. It didn't matter for us because we are only two people but realistically, what would happen in a scenario of 5 people living in the house would be that bedroom 2 person would likely just never wash their hands after they use the toilet outside their room since it doesn't have a sink. People by nature are lazy, am I wrong?.

Anyway, on to the artwork!

20220831_162004~2.jpg

Most of the artwork we bought when we first arrived was cheap Ikea posters that we framed and hung up to make the house a little more homey. From there we started to buy equally cheap destination posters of some of the places that we have been to.

20220831_162039~2.jpg

These posters cost anywhere from 4 euros on the low end to a maximum of 10 euros on the... also very low end.

20220831_161728~2.jpg

Some of them we quite like though and may even get them properly framed when we go back to Canada, like the Gruyere one above. It's a little smaller and is made from better paper than the shiny poster material of some of the others.

20220831_161754~2.jpg

We actually quite like this old coffee advertisement as well since it's very French and will act as a good memory piece to our time in France.

20220831_161814~2.jpg

We also bought these small paintings from an artist in Rocamador because they really suit our current house here in France. They are just prints and the weren't expensive or anything but I hope we can find a place for them in our slightly more modern house back home. Some of the other pictures on our walls can be seen in the photos above.

20220831_161905~2.jpg

I don't have much more to say at this point. A little bit of our stuff gets disassembled and packed away each day and we have movers coming to pick it up over the next two days. Apparently, shipping all of it overseas will take anywhere from 6 weeks to 5 months! It's a good thing that we have most of what we need, most of our own personal furniture and what not is in storage back home to be delivered the day after we arrive.

So anyway, that's a look inside our French home.

Goodbye French House 👋

Well thats it for now. Until next time, thanks for stopping by.

Sort:

Wow, what a gorgeous house! Although it's not that sophisticated in terms of its architecture, it surely served its purpose during your 3-year stay. And I guess you made the right decision when purchasing Ikea furniture and stuff due to its modularity - essential for its functional practicality. Obviously a well-loved abode with so many memories to cherish! 😊

Best wishes on your move back to Canada! Any plans of coming back to France or other parts of Europe for another expat lifestyle?

Yeah it definitely served its purpose, both house and furniture. Currently there are no plans for coming back but we talk about it often. I'm not sure if another opportunity will present itself but it would be hard to turn it down if one did.

Certainly, you'll never know as we can't predict what tomorrow will bring. Yet it's always good to be open to favorable possibilities. Many thanks for sharing a significant milestone of architecture in your life! 😊

No problem. Thanks for stopping by 😁

What a quirky lovely house, is it like a barn conversion or a purpose new build? The kitchen looks a little small for a 5 bedroom house, but maybe thats just us Brits as the trend nowadays is to make the kitchen larger as it's the focal point of the house.

I'm still so gutted you never made it across the channel to UK, so near yet so far. Next time you come back across the pond you'll have to make sure you add UK to your itinerary.

It's not a barn or anything like that, just a small tradition home. I think it's quite old but had a little bit of renovation work inside over the years. Yeah, Canada is the same when it comes to kitchens. They are usually the nicest room in the house and usually a focal point. Most homes are very open concept these days as well.

We definitely still want to visit the UK some day and plan to at some point. I don't know when it will happen but it will one day.

Wow, the toilet situation is a little bizarre but what a lovely place. You will miss that and your travelling/holiday life I am sure. Think of the memories you have amassed. As well as the posters!

Yeah it was a great experience but we knew it wouldn't forever. It's back to real life now. Haha. We will always have the memories.

shipping all of it overseas will take anywhere from 6 weeks to 5 months!

Doesn't that cost more ? I mean, unless, you are very attached to something, it is best to leave them and buy it again. And if you plan to take such a big house, then may be you should add more members :)

It does cost money to move everything but the company my wife works for is paying for it. We do have some stuff that we are attached to, plus a lot of clothing and bedding and stuff like that would also be expensive to replace.

And if you plan to take such a big house, then may be you should add more members

Haha yeah 😆😂 We don't plan to have kids 😅

We don't plan to have kids

You don't need to :) Just go unplanned.

🤣🤣😂

Lovely home your brother. Its nice to make some changes sometimes. Ive never been to Canada even tho im not too far, here by chicago.

Yeah that's not too far. I've been to Chicago once when I was young. Uno's Pizza!

It looks so lovely, such a pitty you have to leave it behind. I really love the old farmhouse look.

It must have been a crazy thing to do, leave everything behind and move to Europe. And by judging your blog, you did spend your time in europe well. Im looking forward at the national parks and lakes on your Hive feed!

Yeah it's a very different style of house than what we are used to back home but that really added to the experience of being here.

We definitely tried to make the most of our time here.

I'm looking forward at the national parks and lakes on your Hive feed!

I'll see what I can do haha 😄

I am so glad you showed us your home. It is really interesting to see the home base to all your amazing travels. Now we look forward to seeing Canada through your lens!

Thanks. Yeah I'll have to find some places to go that are interesting in Canada and take some photos to show people.

I love the minimalist decor of the house. It is so full of character and charm. The exposed beams are the focal point for me.
Nice office areas, and throughout the house I like the use of small tiles. The Skylight windows in the bathroom and bedroom are awesome too.

there is only one "Big garbage Day" per year in our small town

I think you made the right decision to switch to your sleeping beds.

Bizarre bathroom setup, indeed, but I love the fact that you utilized such a lovely old house in a way that there was one entire room as a "Cat's WC" 😂

Charming house...I'd live there in a heartbeat :)))

PS. I totally understand what you mean about the privacy of the walls. I discovered how useful that can be for privacy while living in the Philippines. Now, as I plan my trip back to Jamaica, I'm sorry that we didn't think of building walls around my parents house. I have horrible nosey neighbours there 😟

Yeah I like the character of the place. It did have many drawbacks as well that i forgot to mention. It is an old house with old windows so it's drafty and freezing cold in the winter. We managed though. Every house has pros and cons to it but I think we will mostly remember the pros in the end.

Good luck in your move to Jamaica 🇯🇲 👍

Hi @leaky20, I'm glad you shared your french home with us and I think it's brilliant to be able to write about it and freeze this memory so you could get back to it one day. Indeed Ikea is an expat's convenient and practical choice (haha for the record I am not an Ikea brand ambassador) but they're functional. That's a big change for you both. Have a smooth and stress-free move!

Yeah Ikea definitely makes things easy haha. I'm also not an Ikea ambassador lol. 🤣

Thanks I appreciate it. It's a big move but the learning curve is much lower this time. We don't have to learn a whole new language or anything like that 😂

Sooo cool to see your house you had in France…
Yep packing all up, planning it’s much.
The house looks lovely. And I hear you had some other adventures with others along the way.

Moving abroad and crossing water, it can take a while.
We had to wait for our belongings 8 weeks from Spain to Malta. In a boat. On the way back to Spain it was 4 days over the road with a truck and a ferry. And this wasn’t even close to where your belongings are going. Soon our big move will take much longer like yours.

Hope all goes well for you moving back and the shipping of your belongings. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🍀🍀😊😎

Yeah these big moves do take a long time. They estimated 6 weeks to 5 months for our stuff to get to our house in Canada. It's quite the window of time. I'm hoping that it's closer to 6 weeks than 5 months though hahaha. Good luck in your move

They did give you a long time frame.
Most are around 3 months though with that distance. Let’s be hopeful and hope it is at the shorter end.
Thank you @leaky20 😊😎
Have a great new week!

Wow the house is absolutely beautiful and spacious too. The space was well managed
I would love to build a house like this when i have money too.

Do have a lovely day 🥰

Yeah the house was quite spacious. It was too big for us actually. But it was the one that made the most sense out of the 7 or so that we looked at before moving here so we went with it. We have pets and they created an extra layer of difficulty when house searching. Most of the other expats found apartments but that they wouldn't have worked with the pets because they go outdoors a lot.

Wow...i will come do my holiday there 😂😂

No broken record on this. I totally get ya as I had some expat adventures myself. One you have stayed somewhere for a couple of years the place also becomes your ow. You know the little alleys, the supermarkets and maybe you even start to appreciate your neighbors ;))

The thing is...I could call so may places home now afterwards that is just crazy, leaving is just always leaving an adventure behind as well

Sounds like you know all about big moves like this. 👍

Looks very clean and tidy. Has a classic design that looks comfortable and charming! It seemed so nice to live without needing to leave the house.

It was a nice house and had its own charm, but sadly we do have to leave it.

Thanks for stopping by.

I'm still wondering why you'd have a sink next to the shower 💀

Yeah, again thats another oddity. Not as odd as some other things but still...

If the room is used as a bedroom than it works as a place to brush one's teeth and wash one's face, I suppose. Our bedroom had that and we brushed our teeth there lol. That room should have a toilet in my opinion, at the very least in the master bedroom ensuite.

Wow! you really have such a big house @leaky20. Our small house right now i think is as big as your bedroom one. We have just enough space to sleep. Our kitchen, dining and living room is just in one place. You're so blessed to have that big and beautiful house.

Yeah we were lucky to have that place. Is your house in Ana apartment building in a large city? That sounds like some of the homes in major cities like Paris, New York and Toronto...etc. our place was out in the a small town in the country try so homes tend to be larger than in big cities

We are in the Philippines and for now we are informal settlers here.

I see. To be honest I'm not sure what that means. I've never heard the term before.

Informal settlers means we are living in a place we didn't own. Anytime the owner or the government can demolish us.

Oh I see. I think that is what we call "renters." People who don't own the home but rent it from someone else.

Your house is very beautiful! How much money does it cost to build the house?

I'm not sure. We just rented it. We didn't own it.

I was planning to chase Aurora Borealis in Canada, who knows... we could have a beer or two sometimes

Aurora Borealis (we sometimes call it the "Northern lights") is way up North in Canada. I live in the Southern part of Ontario and we don't get it there. We don't even get stars with all the light pollution of the area lol. I used to see it on occasion when I was young when I live in Cold Lake Alberta because it's quite far North. So if you go to Canada specifically for Aurora Borealis make sure you go way up North and you research areas that get it. Good luck 😁👍

Yeah it's not a simple task to view them really. Between going way up North and also getting away from the lights of towns and cities. Quite challenging. It's great that you have seen them already though.
