The Cuban Capitol (Final Part III) [EN/ES]

English Version

Greetings to all Architecture lovers. This is my third and last publication about the Havana Capitol. In my previous publications, I have shown you the wonders of the place and in this one I finish the tour showing you the rest of the halls.

Cover.jpg

In my previous post I described what we found when we entered the central part of the Salon de los Pasos Perdidos, and how our group began the visit in the north wing of this hall. The tour continues on through the south wing, where at the end we exit at the same point of entry.

IMG_20240419_115332.jpg

In most of the rooms of the Capitol, access is restricted, and it is only possible to see inside from the entrance, this is done to preserve the value of the objects they contain. For this reason, most of the time it was difficult for me to photograph them or to get good shots. Besides, I could not stop or separate from the group, since we had to follow our guide.

Continuing with the same tour, after visiting the Baire Hall, we were directed to the Hemicycle, renamed with the name of Frank País, where the House of Representatives of Cuba was in session, of which the Capitol was the seat until 1959, disintegrating after that year. It is currently the seat of the National Assembly.

The furniture found here are the same that have been from the beginning of this room, I really liked the decor and the colors of the place, red and carmelite of precious woods confer an air of sobriety and solemnity in everything.

In the center is located the President's Tribune, and just behind it is the Cuban flag of Céspedes, which shows the signs of the passage of time and history. This one is different from the current one because it was the first one used at the beginning of the war for the independence of Cuba. It is known as the Flag of Carlos M de Céspedes or of the Damajagua. Under the flag, there are two reliefs that represent the war and the peace, works also of the sculptor Angelo Zanetti, author of the statue of the Republic that is in the Hall of the Lost Steps. On the upper floor of this room, surrounded by columns, was the place reserved for important guests.

The main source of illumination is the natural light coming from the beautiful stained glass windows in the ceiling, which is a work of art and was one of the things I liked most about the Capitol.

Another room of remarkable beauty in the north wing is the Bolivar Room, where the President of the House of Representatives had his office. It is a majestic and elegant room, characteristic of the Empire style to which its design belongs.

In the corridor where the Bolivar Hall is located, there are several balconies and windows overlooking one of the beautiful interior gardens of the Capitol. As a curiosity, here we can see a bronze sculpture of Lucifer. The peculiarity is not the sculpture itself, but how it is represented, showing the dark angel in a victorious attitude with a hand raised to heaven, triumphant.

This sculpture has been in the same place since 1932. It is said that it was placed in the garden as a sort of joke among senators and that since then no one has dared to move it or change its location for superstitious fear of touching the image of the Prince of Darkness. It is one of the few sculptures of Lucifer that exist in the world.

Afterwards, our group continued its tour towards the South Wing, in this area there are two new rooms that were opened to the public after the restoration of the Capitol and they are the Guaimaro and Paralejo rooms, but, before arriving to these rooms we passed through the central area of this floor where the Martí room is located.

Although the lighting here is a little scarce we can appreciate the beauty of the design and decorations, it is one of the most beautiful halls. In the center of the place there is a large marble bust of the National Apostle of Cuba, José Martí.

Visitors are allowed to enter the Guáimaro and Paralejo halls. These are didactic spaces where the history of the Capitol, its construction, the original plans and some important facts of its history are exhibited.

In addition, we can contemplate the patriotic symbols of the Cuban nation, a flag used by the Mambises in their fight for independence, which still preserves blood stains, the coat of arms, the lyrics of our National Anthem and the Constitution of Guaimaro, the first one written by Cuban patriots, among other important documents.

Another hall that stands out for its great beauty is the Juarez Hall, with its admirable ceiling chandelier, the largest in this place.

Although the designs of the ceiling lamps may seem similar, they are unique in each salon. I share with you some pictures I took of several of them. I hope they cause you the same admiration as they did me!

The Capitol captivates us with its beauty, history and works of art of great value such as marble of different colors, tapestries, furniture, lighting lamps and sculptures. Most of the objects in this place are exclusive, were created only to adorn the Capitol, and have been preserved and maintained for the enjoyment of visitors. This is one of the reasons why this building-museum is the most visited in Cuba.

This is the end of my publication about the Capitol of Havana, one of the architectural jewels of our city.

I say goodbye, until next time! 👋

It is definitely majestic! Incredible to see how it is preserved so well because of the exclusivity, access restrictions and importance given to the structure.

The tour you show us is very accurate and every detail that we appreciate in the photos is perceived in the explanation. We have a beautiful architectural record of the Cuban Capitol thanks to you!

Thank you very much, it is a very nice place and after restored even more. I'm glad you liked it.

Hi @jordy0827, Absolutely truly majestic place you have explored. Unfortunately, in order to protect the cultural and historical value of some places, entry or photography is prohibited. However, your content has given us a lot of useful value and knowledge. Words can't express the charm of the architectural elements inside the Havana capitol. Inside the hanging decorative lights, artifacts, color of the tiles, arches shaped doors etc add more interest.

Just as you describe it, it is an amazing place. There are also some rooms that are closed to the public, the place is much bigger, but what I could see was enough for me.

Cheers!

A stunning and beautiful place friend, an exquisite architecture of centuries, very well maintained by what you see

Thank you very much, I'm glad you liked this wonderful building.

Cheers!

This is a very beautiful, impressive building with a high level of artistry @jordy0827

Thank you very much! It is an amazing place.

What a beauty! I love the ceiling decoration, it is a great work of art, every detail is well placed; the lamps look elegant and embellish the place; thank you for sharing such a nice tour of this outstanding building.

Happy Monday!

What you show is spectacular, our Capitol is a jewel in every sense, we could spend several days visiting it and I know that we will always find something new, because it has everything gathered in that place, art, history, architecture and design, great post friend @jordy0827

Thanks friend, I hope you can visit it soon, I'm sure you'll love it. It is beautiful everything inside.

One of the iconic places in the country and one that everyone should visit, although, as you say, it is a place to which access is restricted for conservation and other reasons.

A very significant element that made me admire Eusebio Leal much more was the restoration work of this place that constituted a jewel of Cuban architecture.
Thank you for sharing the publication and the wonderful images. Happy week. Cheers and greetings.

The restoration work was impressive, although I have no point of comparison because it is the first time I went in, but I did read about everything that was done.

It is a very beautiful place.
