The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary: Architecture, love and dedication [ENG/ES]

English Version 🇬🇧
Stories of love and sacrifice are capable of moving us all, and we can find them everywhere. Love, as a powerful feeling, has the ability to drive us to do amazing things, to set goals and strive to achieve them. In today's post I come to show you the church of Our Lady of the Rosary and to tell you about the sacrifice of its former parish priest who made it possible for the church to continue standing to this day.

This church is located in the Havana neighbourhood of Vedado. It is known by the local residents and parishioners as the Church " The Collapse ". In addition to describing what attracts me to this place, I will tell you the reason for this unique nickname.

I have wanted to write about this church for some time, but every time I passed by the place it was closed. In front of the church there is a park where I take my daughter to play when I visit Vedado. From the park, there is a beautiful view of the church, so I always wanted to go inside, but I never had the opportunity to do so until the last time I came to the park and to my pleasant surprise it was open, because a mass was taking place. This made me very happy, although I had to wait until the ceremony was over to photograph the inside, but while the parish priest was speaking to his parishioners I dedicated myself to taking pictures of the outside. Although I am not a Catholic, as a lover of architecture, I love churches, even the simplest ones. All have a very admirable and elegant design.

The exterior of this church is entirely built in stone, with the central tower standing out above the main door, with a bell tower at its highest point and its large bronze bell. Just below the bell, in a window, the insignia symbolizing the love and sacrifice of the Catholic faith can be seen: the cross with the image of Jesus Christ. After climbing a small stone staircase is the main entrance to the church, a double wooden door. On either side of the entrance are two smaller towers, each with a door leading to the parish church.

Inside, there are beautiful details such as the stained glass windows, the altar and the large, thick columns supporting the arches of the ceiling, although some parts of it are in need of repair and painting. The light inside the place comes mainly from its ceiling lamps, as it does not have many natural light entrances, only the entrance doors, which are not very wide. Even so, the place has good lighting and I liked its warm and quiet atmosphere.

The church has a modest and unadorned design, both inside and out. Personally, I like it this way, as it highlights the raw beauty of the stone. For me, this simplicity is a representation of the humility that characterized the life of Jesus, and I love to see that same humility reflected in the temple of God, as is the case with this place. In addition, the story behind this church is also filled with the love and sacrifice of its first parish priest, Father Reginaldo.

This parish was never built in its entirety, apparently the money that was allocated to do so was insufficient. It is said that Father Reginaldo dedicated his efforts to complete the unfinished part of the church with his own hands. With his own effort he learned the trade of masonry and dedicated part of his time to the enlargement of the parish, repairing and building the missing parts with the scarce alms money provided by the people of the community. In spite of the adversities he never abandoned this task, which was too big for one person and the parish priest could not see the work to which he dedicated part of his life finished, as he died before concluding it 🖤.

Also to make matters worse, lightning struck the church, destroying part of the walls and the roof, which are still in ruins. Only the part of the front where the chapel is located is still in use. For this reason it is called " The Collapse " church. I walked along one side of this place and could see through the high windows (some without shutters or bars) the empty rooms and the absence of part of the roof. Also at the back of the building there are some stones on the floor which apparently formed part of the structure.

Although the church of Our Lady of the Rosary was closed for some time, it is now open again and fulfils its function as the local parish church. Father Reginaldo's tireless efforts are still remembered, so much so that a bust was erected in the park in front of the church to honour his memory.

I hope you liked the place and that you have been moved by its story of love and dedication.

About the bibliography:

I couldn't find an official source for this church, so I don't know the details about the year of its construction or who designed it. I only know the story of its parish priest because it is a local story, and I have heard it on more than one occasion from people who visit this place.

Interesting story about this church in Havana as well as everything that was motivation for his complete work, I have always been motivated by these models of buildings that convey the architectural concepts of the time in which they were created.
