Beauty and spirituality [ENG/ES]

A big Greeting to all the community

I want to share with you this publication, which I really enjoyed writing, since it deals with a type of building that has always called my attention. I am referring to a church. Even though I do not practice the Catholic faith, I am attracted to this type of building because of its impressive architecture and beautiful decorative elements. So while writing I decided to do some research on the subject and share with you some of this knowledge. I hope you enjoy it.

The church about which I am going to write is called: Santa Catalina de Sienna Parish. It is located on Paseo Avenue in the Vedado neighborhood of Havana, Cuba.

Before I begin to describe the details of this church, I would like to tell you a little about its history. In the beginning, the church and the convent of Santa Catalina de Sienna, home of the Dominican sisters, was located in a different location from the present one, in Old Havana. However, due to inconveniences such as urbanization and the lack of tranquility in the area, the nuns decided to sell the building and its land to build a new church and convent in a more secluded and quiet place. The old convent was demolished and all valuables were moved.

In May 1918, the nuns moved to their new residence, where the present church, which combines neo-Gothic and Romanesque architectural styles, is located. The convent belonging to the parish, which was the cloister of the Carmelite nuns, has another function today, since it was converted into a public school.

When observing the church, the first thing that impresses is its size. It is a large building with a facade that has two towers that rise to culminate in domes, which gives it even more height and majesty.

Regarding the large size of the churches, it is important to know that these constructions are created with the purpose of honoring the glory of God, so they seek to be as magnificent and beautiful as possible. In addition, they are places where large numbers of people congregate to celebrate religious and social events, so they must have ample capacity to accommodate the faithful.

The Santa Catalina de Sienna church is a construction that has beautiful details that make it very unique and attractive, such as its round windows in the shape of a cross. Another particularity is the coat of arms of the Dominicans order on the upper part of the façade, with its motto "Veritas", which means "Love for the Truth". A symbol that represents the values and principles of this religious order.

Churches have their own and distinctive architecture that makes them fascinating since every detail of their design has a symbolism and meaning. An example of this are the doors of churches. They constitute the main entrance to a sacred site and symbolize the division between the spiritual and the earthly world. The central and main door is always the largest and symbolizes the passage through to the divine.

In the case of the church of St. Catalina of Sienna, the arch of its main entrance is adorned with a fleur-de-lis, for the Catholic faith the three petals of this flower symbolize the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Through this arch one arrives to its great central door, made of wood. This door is very beautiful, with beautiful details engraved in the wood. In the upper part of the door, we can observe beautiful crystals and, worked in relief, the same flower of the main entrance, but in smaller size. This door is the one that gives access to the central chamber of the church.

Once inside, the first thing that catches my attention is the ceiling, churches have very beautiful ceilings so it is impossible not to look up. This place has a large vaulted ceiling and in its center hangs an impressive teardrop chandelier, which due to the great height of the place adds a lot of elegance. Although it was off at the time due to the time of day, I couldn't help but imagine how wonderful it must look when lit. The ceilings in a church can become true architectural and artistic gems.

Its interior is supported by a large number of columns that unite to form a beautiful arch. These columns have a simple and sober design, and this is a characteristic that distinguishes the temple, which stands out for the beauty in the simplicity of its elements. The columns in a church, in addition to their structural function, also have a spiritual meaning since they symbolize the pillars on which the Catholic faith rests. Therefore, they not only fulfill a practical function, but also have a symbolic and spiritual representation.

I really liked the combination of all the elements that can be seen in its interior. Its walls are adorned with brightly colored vitreaux and the floor is designed with a beautiful combination of black and white slabs. The wooden benches add a cozy contrast to the ambiance, at the same time standing out among the light-colored walls and ceiling. Overall, the combination of these elements creates a unique and very pleasant atmosphere.

In both lateral walls are the niches destined to lodge the altars of the saints, which are elaborated in marble. These figures are always very impressive, with beautiful vestments and carefully worked details that catch the eye, being a reflection of the beautiful art of religious sculpture.

At the back of the church is the presbytery, with its main altar that can be seen from the moment you enter the precinct. The altar, made of marble, contains the sculpture of the Saint that gives its name to the Parish, Saint Catherine of Sienna. It is adorned with beautiful flowers as a symbol of respect and devotion, which also bring freshness and vitality to the environment. It is a very simple altar, but that does not detract from its sobriety and beauty. At its feet, a blood red color carpet is spread, in honor to the blood spilled by Jesus Christ.

At the end of my tour, I stopped in front of the image of Christ crucified and although I am not Catholic, I could not help but be moved by the story of love and sacrifice of this great man. Taking advantage of the tranquility and serene atmosphere of the place, I sat down on one of the benches, enjoying the peace and silence felt in this sacred place.

The church is not only for Catholics, but it is a sanctuary that welcomes everyone equally. Personally, whenever I pass by a church, I like to enter and enjoy its majesty and beauty.

I hope you have enjoyed this tour, as always it is a pleasure to show the architectural beauties of my city.

I bid you farewell, see you next time!

Me despido.

A mí me encantó tu post.

Thank you very much. Churches are really beautiful constructions.

The shape of the doors of the chursh presented by your content and shapes of the designs above it are of particular interest and attraction. Of course, your content will be more attraction if you look at the basic attractive architectural features of a Christian church. Like in our country's church, ceramic tiles are seen in the churches of your country. It's special architectural feature.

Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it.

I really like this building @jordy0827

Thank you very much!

Wow! what an impressive architecture this church has @jordy, I liked the interior design of the domes and the details of the columns, as for the color of the walls the pastel tones fit very well, which allows to highlight the color of the top of the domes, a place with many elements of architecture and design to admire.

Greetings and blessings!

Thank you I am glad you liked it, it is a very nice church with many details both outside and inside.
Cheers

I saw the windows of this building look a lot like vintage alhambra bracelets that are going global. I think I'm not mistaken, maybe this is the inspiration.

It could be. Thank you for your comment.
Cheers

Love at first sight! That church is truly a remarkable masterpiece of Neo-Gothic and Romanesque architecture. Although it was built around a century ago, that sacred building still looks fairly new, probably due to its excellent care and maintenance. 👍

Of all the design details you've described, which one has intrigued you the most and why @jordy0827? 😊

I was intrigued by many of them, so I looked for information beforehand. What makes me most curious is to know why this architectural style is the amount of details it has, sometimes I find them a little excessive jeje and the amount of designs in a pointed shape, like peaks (I do not know if I explain) that is what most attracts my attention.

Right, that's understandable. A building with an overflowing display of details seldom tends to be overwhelming, drowning spectators in its presence, lol. 😁

However, I believe certain architectural styles are the result of embedding design signatures that become part of their distinctive identity. Nevertheless, the human experience of architecture is always subjective, and I completely respect your opinion. Thank you for this impressive story! 👍😊

Thank you, not only for this building, but for images of others that I've seen and I find them a bit too much jeje, but hey, I respect your opinion, you are the expert here jaja.

In fact, Catholic churches have a great sense of design according to the region where they are located; I feel that in addition to religion they promote the place through architecture, because their stained glass windows are unique as colorful and the details for the statues such as the walls are unique to see and appreciate.
