Greetings to this beautiful community Design+Architecture
Today I come to write about the Teatro Ateneo, a historical monument of Maracay, created for the entertainment of the people of this city. The name "athenaeum" came from the temple of Pallas in Athens, Greece, for being a meeting place for artists, philosophers, writers and singers.
In the past, the city of Maracay used to present activities and events of singing, art, performances and shows that filled the city of Maracay with pride. These events were held in the Girardot Square, since it did not have its own space for this kind of events, for that reason the president and General Juan Vicente Gomez, a man fanatic about singing and movies, decreed on October 6, 1922 the creation of a new theater for the nation.
With the purpose of offering a place of attraction and meeting place for the activities and enjoyment of the people of Maracay, the construction began in 1923. With effort and constant work, the construction was carried out. One of the materials used for this construction was Portland cement, which came in wooden barrels from Germany. After some setbacks, the construction continued until the building was completed. Finally, on July 24, 1926, the Ateneo Theater of Maracay was inaugurated in Renaissance style with some decorations and balconies. Its doors were opened to the public, making great presentations of theater, movies, writers, poets and music.
Unfortunately, after the death of President Juan Vicente Gómez, this place was never the same again, so it remained mostly closed. Once in a while they opened its doors for some events. But at present it is not open to the public, due to remodeling works, in that sense, it has suffered some setbacks and so far the work is in the process of reconstruction until further notice. This is a shame because it is a beautifully designed theater and should be better utilized to the fullest.
In spite of the time it has been paralyzed, this structure maintains its deco style, with a perfect combination of white and blue that makes it look very beautiful. The design of the theater obeyed the Greek art of the 15th century, we can observe the faces of people or muses that adorn the front columns of the theater. In ancient Greece, the three muses were known as Nete, Mese and Hipate, they were great divinities and very inspiring in terms of art, love and science. They represent a symbol of support and overcoming.
This space previously had 54 windows for better ventilation and as they have been remodeled, they have sealed some of them because the theater had to maintain its space and a little privacy.
This theater has kept its doors closed, wishing that someday it could again be what it once was, a space that brought joy and emotions to the inhabitants and visitors of the city, sharing knowledge and talents found in children, youth and adults, with the great presentations of theater, dance and music that took place in this place. Since then, Maracayeros have been looking forward to enjoy this place again.
My dear friends I had the opportunity to take a tour of this theater and I can tell you that it was a delightful experience to have known and detailed with my eyes this beautiful structure with a design very little seen here in the city of Maracay. And is that the art deco, permeates its design, perfectly straight columns, every structure transmits symmetry and is pleasing to the eye. Let's remember that this is what deco art seeks, that it be decorative, not so much functional and the fact of seeing this space with such symmetrical shapes and so colorful, despite its two shades of blue and white, contrasts with the rest of the environment. It's as if we were seeing a gift box in a place full of brown and empty boxes.
I really liked how the columns look as they are already well strengthened. Overall it is very well preserved, the remodeling work is doing the right thing. About the detail of the muses, I thought it was fantastic as it is as if these divinities were watching over and inspiring the artists before and at the moment of their presentation.
This architecture is of two floors and in the upper part it has a nice balcony with some ornaments and eye-catching details. It must be very interesting and pleasant to go out and look out on them after a performance and chat with the artists. Hopefully I will have the opportunity to go there sometime. I would surely share with you what the theater is like inside.
This has been all my dear friends, Thank you for visiting my blog. Greetings.
Saludos.
Hello @carmary. How are you? When I first saw the photo of that gorgeous theater, I had the impression that the building was located in Santorini, Greece. Why? Because of the blue and white color theme, it embodies. I do hope that the historical monument of Teatro Ateneo would be fully completed to allow the public to completely enjoy its valuable offerings once again. Fantastic story! 😊
Hello @storiesoferne. Indeed this theater has some details to Greek art, the decorations are quite beautiful, both the walls and the balcony. A perfect combination between white and blue color that makes the theater dazzle. Wishing that one day this structure could be ready again with the doors open for the enjoyment of the locals and inhabitants. Thank you for reading and commenting. Best regards.
I love the details of the faces on the columns of the building. This athenaeum seems to me to be very well preserved, I don't see any details of deterioration, that's a good thing. Many times I visited the Ateneo of the city of Valencia and witnessed different cultural activities including music, which is of my interest. I hope this Ateneo of Maracay can open its doors, it is very important the cultural activity in the cities. Very good information has your post and good photos 😊
Indeed, the decorations give it a touch of beauty and splendor. It is also in perfect condition, one detail or another, but it looks quite elegant. Wishing to open its doors because as you say structures like these if that are important in the city, I think that these places and bring much excitement and happiness to families and especially to the city. Thank you friend @dimascastillo90 for commenting. Greetings.
