Hello everyone, Good morning and welcome to my blogs for today and hope you guys have a great day today
In our world, social networking sites have taken center stage since it helps us to reach out to our friends, families, and even the whole world. Due to the existence of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, among many others, it has become easier to express one’s views, share experience and pictures to any audience around the world and within no time. Despite the fact that social networks maintain personal attractiveness through advantages such as social engagement and information overload, many people are becoming concerned about the threat posed by social networks to their mental health
People have become addicted to the social media that they post only the good side of them and how everyone wishes, usually not real, to exhibit their arranged perfect life. Users who do not measure up the social media distorted images of other people suffer feelings of inadequacy, jealousy, and social isolation if they are excluded from the perfect group. Research indicates that the more time an individual spends on social media the more likely the individual feels anxious, depressed, and has low esteem.
social networking sites often enhance users’ the fear of missing out troublesome concept. The updates regarding their friends enjoying some partying or some other fun activity can make an individual feel degraded that they are missing out on some important experiences. Such feelings can cause social exclusion as well as force an individual to over engage in social activities to avoid lagging behind other people.
It can cause an individual anxiety where the individual overstays focused on their phone checking for any new posts to avoid being left out.
Another suggested harmful effect of social media mental health is cyber bullying. There are those who get the urge to bully because the social media platform shield is somewhat exaggerated. This bullying behavior can affect even the victims’ mental health as they are filled with stress, depression, and in the highest cases, suicidal thoughts. Cyber Bullying has been rampant, with numerous people reporting its occurrence especially amongst the youth who are frequent targets of online abuse.
In spite of these adverse aspects, there is a therapeutic side of social media that one cannot ignore. Many people have the opportunity to feel that they are part of something bigger than themselves by establishing virtual forums where they can talk about their problems, seek understanding, and get support or counseling from those who have faced the same hardships.
It is very advisable for these users to regulate their time on social media by setting limits and safeguarding their mental health as a priority. Also, some of the steps that such platforms can enable users to promote wellbeing are addressing cyber bullying and healthy lifestyle campaigning. Finally, maintaining mental well being in this computerized generation literally means striking a balance between virtual and real life activities.
