Over the years, I’ve come to realize that self-care and leisure aren’t just nice to have—they’re essential. Life can get hectic, and I know I’m at my best when I make time to unwind, recharge, and do things that feel genuinely enjoyable. One way I prioritize self-care is by starting my day slowly. Mornings for me are about setting the right tone, and I have a little ritual: Nescafe 3 in 1 coffee. I don’t rush through it; I sip my coffee, enjoy the quiet, and let my thoughts wander. It’s a chance to clear my mind before jumping into the day’s demands. I know it may sound simple, but it makes a world of difference. This quiet time reminds me that self-care doesn’t have to be complicated—it just has to be intentional.
Another part of my self-care routine is taking time out for myself, usually in the form of writing, dancing or listening to music. I’m a huge music fan, and nothing helps me unwind more than putting on a good playlist and just letting the sounds take over. Whether it’s Afrobeats, Amapiano, or something a bit more mellow, music has a way of shifting my mood instantly. I’ll often put on my headphones, lie down, and let the music wash away any stress from the day. I’ve come to see this as more than just listening to songs—it’s an escape and a way to reconnect with myself. Writing also play a big role in my downtime. Overtime, i have found out that writing drives me into another world and keep me there for hours, which is exactly what I need sometimes to reset and be free.
Taking walks is another important part of my self-care routine. When I need a break, I like to get outside and just walk around. I’ll take in the scenery, notice little details in my surroundings, and let my mind wander freely. It sounds simple, but there’s something about moving at my own pace, in my own space, that helps me decompress. Sometimes I take my phone along and snap photos of whatever catches my eye—a unique tree, an interesting building, or even a random street scene. These moments make me feel connected to my surroundings and give me a sense of calm.
Personal hygiene is also a big part of how I take care of myself. Back in my first year of university, someone pointed out that I smell bad, which was embarrassing but also a wake-up call. I realized that staying fresh isn’t just about appearance; it’s also about how it makes you feel. Ever since then, I’ve made it a habit to shower regularly, use deodorants, and stay on top of my hygiene, especially since I tend to sweat easily. Taking these steps has become second nature, and I notice I feel better and more confident when I take care of myself in this way.
Lastly, I’ve learned to prioritize myself by resting well. I have hardly been having enough time to sleep in school due to high packed classes so I have found a way to atleast sleep for some hours in the afternoon or during the evening period to calm down and atleast have some time to rest my brain so i can be energized and be prepared for the rest of the day.
As for me, self-care isn’t about extravagant things; it’s about finding balance. Whether it’s through my morning coffee ritual, getting lost in music, or taking walks, these little routines keep me grounded. Making time for myself has become essential to feeling my best, no matter what else life throws my way.
