Kindness is one of those simple actions that may not cost much, yet it has a way of touching lives in ways we do not always expect. Sometimes we don't plan or think it before rendering an act of kindness to others. Other times, it takes a conscious decision to step forward when others choose to look away. But one thing is clear, kindness does not go unnoticed, and in one way or another, it always brings a reward, whether in unexpected blessings, or in peace of mind or in the satisfaction that comes from doing good.
Last week at work, I realized something that reminds me of how powerful kindness can be. A man drove up to pay his toll fee. But unfortunately for him, his bank’s network refused to connect, and he didn’t have any cash on him. As minutes passed, the situation became more embarrassing. A long line of cars was already forming behind him, and some drivers were getting impatient. He tried all he could, checking his network, refreshing his app, checking his balance, even switching his network to his other sim card but nothing worked.

The man felt helpless. I could see the worry on his face. He kept apologizing, and hoping that the network will return. But it not. At that point, I felt it wasn’t right for him to stand there struggling while others became upset behind him. I didn’t know him before that day, we had never met. But something in me pushed me to help. So I stepped in and paid the toll fee for him. The amount wasn’t much, but the relief on his face was worth more than the money itself.
I gave him my account details and told him that once he got to a place with network, he could transfer it back. Honestly, I didn’t even think much of it. I just wanted the embarrassment to end for him, and I wanted the long line behind him to move. Throughout that day, I didn’t stress myself thinking about whether he would pay back or not. I simply felt I had done the right thing.
He surprised me, though. He actually came back while traveling to his work place and gave the money back today, after about a week ago now. I appreciated it, but I didn’t think too deeply about it. After all, people forget things, and the situation happened so fast that I wasn’t expecting anything more.
I was at my duty post then my colleague called me and said someone wanted to see me. I wasn’t expecting anyone, so I was curious. When I stepped outside, I saw the same man standing there. I came and greeted him and he then explained to me that he misplaced the account details I wrote for him on the paper. He apologized for the delay and thanked me again for stepping in when he needed help.
Then he reached into his pocket and brought out money, ten times the amount I paid for him that day and gave it to me. I was surprised. I even told him that the money was far more than what drivers usually pay, but he insisted. He said he was giving me more because of how kind I was to him, for stepping in for him and because I trusted him even without knowing who he was. He said he could have passed without stopping since he knew I might not recognize him, but he chose to return because he wanted to appreciate my kindness properly. And truly, I did not recognise at first glance.

I just stood there thinking about how life works. A small act of gesture I had forgotten came back to me in a much bigger way. It wasn’t about the money, it was the sincerity behind it that made it meaningful.
Most times kindness always finds its path back, even when we least expect it. Little acts of kindness may appear small, but they carry the power that returns to us in surprising forms. When we choose to be kind, we not only help others, we also open doors for unexpected blessings in our own lives.
