My Stop at Nyoman Ada Gallery

in Daily Blog2 months ago

During my brief visit to Pakuduwi Village, known for its beautiful rice terraces, I stopped by Nyoman Ada Gallery, famous for its large wood carvings. Nyoman Ada is a pioneer in woodcarving in this village, particularly renowned for his massive Garuda statues, a mythical bird in Hinduism.

The gallery itself is shaped like a big Garuda bird, with the entrance designed as the head of Garuda, and its wings spreading to the left and right.

The gallery is enormous, with statues around three meters high. The highlight of the gallery is the impressive statue of Garuda Vishnu, depicting the god Vishnu riding the Garuda bird. Besides this centerpiece, there are also carvings of Hindu gods, mythological characters, serpents, and Balinese dancers. I was particularly struck by the statues of Lakshmana, Rama, and Sita from the Ramayana epic.

The gallery also features statues of animals, including cows and serpents. The serpent is a mythical animal that also appears in Hindu mythology. There are also intricate carvings of Buddha, Lakshmana, and Shiva, another significant god in Hinduism, all crafted from wood. Additionally, there are statues structured to depict various stories, showcasing very intricate details. A standout piece is the Garuda Pancasila panel, a golden symbol of Indonesia.

Though my visit was short, I was amazed by the size and detail of the carvings. Nyoman Ada’s gallery is a true showcase of Balinese sculpture and craftsmanship.
