Jumping the Shark
Living in this century is like jumping the shark. I was there when this term was minted. It didn’t catch on right away. Everybody who was of a certain age back then knew the reference when they heard it again. Another saying from youth is “drinking the cool aid.”
Ring around the Rosie – let’s see what AI has to say about jumping the shark.
Here’s what I already knew; “Jumping the Shark” comes from the 1950s throwback sit-com “Happy Days” [1977] when “The Fonz” took on the challenge of jumping a caged shark on water skies while wearing his “trade mark” leather jacket. And he probably didn’t get wet either.
Here’s what I learned; the term was revived as a URL in the late 1990s [1997 I think it was] and the term refers to the “identifiable beginning of a creative decline for a once-popular series.” It remains a shorthand for the moment a show loses its magic.
Now – I must either alter my opening sentence – or make it work.
I think I will make it work.
How?
Because in this century, in this moment I feel like I have seen enough. Everything is a rerun. The “magic” of the “TV” series is gone. There are options and one of them is not to be so voyeuristic. Maybe Universe is signaling to stop being absorbed in pre-recorded materials and – look elsewhere.
But let me tell you why Mind originally referenced the shark jump.
As we have begun to do consciously and intentionally every year around October, we got a running start into this century. As if we were building up velocity to jump the shark. Or maybe the Grand Canyon.
If you have ever seen Evel Knievel jump a bunch of vehicles on this motorcycle you remember that there’s a long ramp on the up side. For me 2001 to 2016 represents that ramp. Then you’re airborne. The stunt literally takes seconds. Like that thick ketchup that used to take so long to get started and then just spills out all over the place. It’s the anticipation that takes hours. It’s a show. He’s up. He’s over. He’s down. It’s over. Unless he crashes.
Since 2016 We have been airborne. Looking down at all the chaos and mayhem that’s being stirred up below us. It can’t reach us because we are disinterested.
Apathy will set you free.
But we’ve still got to clear the shark tank – land safely – at least undamaged on the other side and take a victory lap waving to the audience while we thank the Most High for a safe landing
