Dear friends, today I had the pleasure of doing my hike with my son who decided to join me to enjoy together this beautiful sunny and cool day of our pleasant winter.

We decided to walk through the Miramar neighborhood that is always very comforting for the beautiful views of its city landscape accompanied by beautiful gardens and fabulous houses with very elegant architectural designs.

We begin the tour by walking through the tunnel that crosses the Almendares River underneath, which borders the Vedado and Miramar neighborhoods. Just at the exit of the tunnel, Fifth Avenue begins with numbered streets that begin with zero and increase with even numbers.

This avenue has a wide central promenade with beautiful and well-kept bushes, it is very common to see in early hours people doing exercises running or walking as we do.

The first thing that catches your eye on the avenue is a beautiful fountain called Fountain of the Americas. My son and I approached to observe all its details since we always admire its beauty as we pass, but we had never had enough time to observe it carefully and photograph it.

It is a fountain of great elegance in accordance with the design of the neighborhood, it is made of white marble and was inaugurated in 1924. It was designed by the American architect Hohn Wilson and made by the Italian sculptor Pietro Mantfredi.

At one end it has the national coat of arms and below it is engraved Avenue of the Americas, in honor of Christopher Columbus, discoverer of the Americas, and this was the previous name of this avenue.

At the opposite end it also has the national coat of arms and below it you can see Miramar, which is the name of the neighborhood.

We can appreciate that it has 4 beautifully sculpted mermaids, one on each of its four sides, holding large seashells, the water should fall from its top into the shells and then roll down their bodies, but these days it is not working, it is a shame not to be able to show the full of its charm.

Very close to the fountain we see a peculiar and beautiful house that is called the Green Gables House. It attracts a lot of attention for the various geometric shapes of its façade and its green roofs. It currently functions as the Promoter Centre for Modern and Contemporary Architecture, Urbanism and Interior Design.

This beautiful house was built in 1926 but suffered great deterioration until it was restored in 2010 to its original splendor.

We approached to find out what kind of activities are offered and they explained to us that summer workshops are held for children and adolescents, related to photography and visual arts, there are also piano concerts and varied exhibitions for the enjoyment of those interested.

It also functions as a museum for visitors to admire the unique beauty of its interior design because when its restoration was completed, the building was faithful to how it was originally. Guided tours are only once a week, but you can also visit when there are scheduled activities. We were left with the desire to know its interior because today it was not open to the public, on another occasion we will achieve it.

It is my wish that you enjoyed getting to know these wonders of Fifth Avenue in the Miramar neighborhood of Havana.
