La noche de anoche fue grata a pesar de los pesares. Yo la pasé junto a mi familia, tranquilos y sin mucho alboroto. La gente se veía alegre por las calles y en sus casas, listo para despedir y empezar un nuevo ciclo, listos para hacer lo que siempre se hace por acá. En Cuba, la llegada del Año Nuevo no se concibe sin una serie de rituales colectivos cargados de simbolismo, fe y esperanza. Más allá de las fiestas, la música, las comidas y las bebidas, la noche del 31 de diciembre está marcada por costumbres populares profundamente arraigadas, que mezclan tradición, superstición y el deseo universal de mejorías.

Last night was pleasant despite everything.I spent it with my family, calm and without much fuss. People looked happy in the streets and in their homes, ready to say goodbye and start a new cycle, ready to do what is always done around here. In Cuba, the arrival of the New Year is inconceivable without a series of collective rituals loaded with symbolism, faith, and hope. Beyond the parties, music, food, and drinks, the night of December 31st is marked by deeply rooted popular customs that mix tradition, superstition, and the universal desire for improvement.
Tres sucesos en particular destacan por su permanencia en los hogares de toda Cuba, les hablo de la quema del muñeco (Año Viejo), dar la vuelta a la manzana con una maleta y echar un cubo de agua a la calle. Estas tres prácticas se realizan cuando el reloj llega a las doce campanadas y es el momento cumbre, el clímax de estas costumbres.
Three events in particular stand out for their permanence in homes across Cuba:I'm talking about burning the effigy (Old Year), walking around the block with a suitcase, and throwing a bucket of water into the street. These three practices are carried out when the clock strikes twelve chimes, and it is the peak moment, the climax of these customs.
El ritual más esperado y espectacular de todos es, sin duda, la quema del "Año Viejo". Los cubanos tenemos por costumbre confeccionar un muñeco, a menudo con ropas viejas y relleno de trapos, pajas, yerbas o aserrín, que representa al año que termina con todos sus males y pesares. A este muñeco, a veces con rasgos humorísticos, se le puede poner un sombrero, una gorra y hasta un tabaco o cualquier otro aditamento, y luego se coloca en la puerta de la casa o en un lugar visible del barrio unos días antes de la fecha de su deceso o incineración.
Yo misma he hecho muchos de esos muñecos junto a mis hijos en años anteriores, aprovechando para deshacerme de ropas y trapos en desuso. Estos muñecos que les muestro son de los vecinos de mi barrio, todos muy simpáticos y creativos.
The most anticipated and spectacular ritual of all is, without a doubt, the burning of the "Old Year." We Cubans have the custom of making an effigy, often with old clothes and stuffed with rags, straw, herbs, or sawdust, which represents the year that is ending with all its ills and sorrows. This effigy, sometimes with humorous features, can be given a hat, a cap, and even a cigar or any other accessory, and then it is placed at the door of the house or in a visible spot in the neighborhood a few days before its demise or incineration.
I myself have made many of these effigies with my children in previous years,taking the opportunity to get rid of unused clothes and rags. These effigies I'm showing you are from my neighborhood neighbors, all very nice and creative.
Justo a la medianoche del 31 se le da candela ante la mirada de familiares, amigos y vecinos. Las llamas consumen las energías negativas, los los fracasos y las penurias del ciclo que concluye, purificando el camino para el año entrante. Es un acto catarsis y anagnórisis, una liberación colectiva que convierte las calles en un paisaje de pequeñas hogueras de despedida, así lucía mi barrio anoche.
Right at midnight on the 31st,it is set on fire before the eyes of family, friends, and neighbors. The flames consume the negative energies, failures, and hardships of the concluding cycle, purifying the path for the incoming year. It is an act of catharsis and anagnorisis, a collective liberation that turns the streets into a landscape of small farewell bonfires; this is how my neighborhood looked last night.
Paralelamente, se ejecuta una tradición con un propósito más personal: dar la vuelta a la manzana. En el preciso instante en que el año nuevo se hace oficial, muchas personas, a menudo cargando una maleta o una mochila vacía, salen de sus casas y caminan rápidamente alrededor de la manzana de su edificio o cuadra.
Este corto "viaje" simboliza el anhelo de viajar, de cruzar el atlántico en un avión, en un barco o en un cohete si fuera necesario, de que el nuevo año traiga consigo oportunidades de movimiento, ya sea un viaje anhelado, un cambio de residencia o simplemente el fluir de la vida sin obstáculos. En un país donde la movilidad internacional es un tema bien sensible, este acto carga una profunda esperanza y se convierte en una petición al destino.
Simultaneously, a tradition with a more personal purpose is carried out: walking around the block. At the precise instant the new year becomes official, many people, often carrying an empty suitcase or backpack, leave their homes and walk quickly around the block of their building or neighborhood.
This short"journey" symbolizes the longing to travel, to cross the Atlantic by plane, ship, or rocket if necessary, for the new year to bring opportunities for movement, whether it be a longed-for trip, a change of residence, or simply the flow of life without obstacles. In a country where international mobility is a very sensitive issue, this act carries a deep hope and becomes a petition to fate.
Y por último, está la costumbre de echar un cubo o balde de agua limpia hacia la calle. Inmediatamente después de la medianoche, desde las puertas y ventanas, el agua sale con fuerza para "barrer lo malo" y "limpiar" el hogar de cualquier residuo negativo que haya quedado del año viejo, purificando el umbral y aclarando el aura. Además, se cree que esta agua atrae la prosperidad y abre los caminos, lava las penas e invoca a la buena suerte. Es un acto sencillo pero poderoso, que une a las familias en un objetivo común de limpieza espiritual. Y como yo tampoco escapó a esa tradición, claro que heche mi cubito de agua a la calle.
And finally, there is the custom of throwing a bucket or pail of clean water into the street. Immediately after midnight, from doors and windows, the water is thrown forcefully to "sweep away the bad" and "clean" the home of any negative residue left from the old year, purifying the threshold and clearing the aura. Furthermore, it is believed that this water attracts prosperity and opens paths, washes away sorrows, and invokes good luck. It is a simple but powerful act that unites families in a common goal of spiritual cleansing. And as I did not escape that tradition either, of course, I threw my little bucket of water into the street.
Estos tres rituales, tienen como propósito quemar lo malo, caminar hacia lo nuevo y purificar el entorno, exponen el espíritu resiliente y optimista del pueblo cubano. No son simples supersticiones, sino un lenguaje cultural compartido, una forma colectiva de enfrentar la incertidumbre de estos tiempos con fe. Representan la voluntad de cerrar, con broche de oro, un capítulo con valor, de albergar sueños de progreso, y de recibir el futuro con las puertas y el corazón limpios, listos para lo que el año nuevo nos pueda traer. Y yo, solo puedo levantar mi copa para desear un 2026 lleno de dichas y bendiciones para todos.
These three rituals, which aim to burn the bad, walk towards the new, and purify the surroundings, expose the resilient and optimistic spirit of the Cuban people. They are not mere superstitions, but a shared cultural language, a collective way of facing the uncertainty of these times with faith. They represent the will to close, with a golden clasp, a chapter with valor, to harbor dreams of progress, and to welcome the future with doors and heart cleansed, ready for whatever the new year may bring us. And I, I can only raise my glass to wish for a 2026 full of happiness and blessings for all.

Yo lo pasé en Marianao y dí una vuelta por ahí. Habían bastante muñecos para quemar, lástima que iba cargada de cosas y no pude hacer fotos para un post.

Le comentaba a @cumanauta que esta tradición del muñeco es fuerte por mi casa se quemaron varios, en el 2014 junto quemar el muñeco, di la vuelta a la manzana y ese mismo año volé por 5 varios a Venezuela, entonces si es efectiva al parecer. feliz año.

Excelente publicación mi estimada amiga que nos repasa a nosotros mismos los cubanos, estos actos identitarios que nos han caracterizado durante varias generaciones. Al mismo tiempo es muy elocuente e ilustrada con imágenes y mostrar a los amigos de otras partes del mundo, estos pasajes de nuestra identidad nacional. Me encantó leerte y disfrutar de las fotos que nos compartiste.

todavia el santerismo e idolatria estan muy arraigados en LatinAmerica, lo cual es contra Dios.Gente caminando con maletas alrededor de la casa dizque para viajar al exterior durante el nuevo ano : Los agoreros y adivinos no entraran al Reino de los Cielos.
Así es la diversidad, por suerte no todo el mundo cree en lo mismo.
