Parish Christmas party at my new workplace [ENG-ESP]

Today I attended my first parish party in the new community where I work. Since I arrived last week, I am still not very accustomed to the environment, and although many of my coworkers are friendly, I still don’t feel comfortable with any of them. For this party, which is attended by all the educational institutions in the parish, the show is mainly performed by the teachers from each institution and a small group of students.

Hoy asistí a mi primer parrandón parroquial en la nueva comunidad donde trabajo, como llegué la semana pasada todavía no estoy muy adaptada al ambiente y aunque muchas de mi compañeras de trabajo son amables todavía no logro sentir confianza con ninguna. Para este parrandón al que asisten todas las unidades educativas que se encuentran en la parroquia, el espectáculo lo realizan principalmente los docentes de cada institución y una pequeña representación de estudiantes.

This party took place on the street in front of the town’s high school. Each school was assigned a place to put up their Christmas decorations and sell their products. At the school where I work, we sold bread cakes and brown sugar with lemon. The other institutions (schools, high schools, preschools, even the senior citizens’ club) had many things for sale, from popcorn and cookies to Christmas dishes. We even had a visit from the community priest, who offered a few words, said some prayers, and blessed everyone present.

The decorations were also very pretty. We decorated with a nativity scene, balloons, and Christmas ornaments. The rest of the attendees also decorated with photo backdrops in the shape of gingerbread houses, Christmas trees, and more.

Este parrandón se llevó a cabo en la calle, enfrente del liceo del pueblo, a cada escuela se le asignó un lugar donde colocar su decoración navideña y el producto que iba a vender, en la escuela donde trabajo vendimos tortas de pan y papelón con limón, las otras instituciones (escuelas, liceo, preescolar, hasta el club de los abuelos) tenía muchas cosas a la venta desde cotufas, galletas hasta plato navideño. Hasta tuvimos la visita del sacerdote de la comunidad, quien ofreció una palabras e hizo algunas oraciones y bendijo a todos los presentes.

La decoración también fue muy bonita, nosotros decoramos con un dibujo del nacimiento, globos y adornos navideños. Así también el resto de los asistentes también decoraron con fondos para fotografías en forma de casas de jengibre, árboles de navidad, entre otros.

For the music, there was a band that accompanied everyone who went up on stage. There was no singing along to a backing track, nothing like that. Here, everyone showed off their artistic talents with live musicians. The first to sing were the children from all the preschools with their respective teachers, then the representatives from the schools and high schools, and finally the teachers. All the institutions really prepared themselves in an incredible way. I had never attended a party like this before. It was a lot of fun, with a great Christmas spirit, playing bagpipes and the children singing carols.

Although I had just arrived at the school last week, I knew which song my colleagues were rehearsing, so I listened to it several times at home to at least accompany them in the chorus. Even though I didn’t really want to go up on stage, I knew that the more of us there were supporting the chorus, the better the song would sound. Once I was up there, I took a picture of the audience, which, by the way, was quite large. As you can see in the photo, I didn’t stand at the front of the line, but rather at the back, clapping, dancing, and singing along 😁. Next year, when I have more time and confidence, I will get more involved, although I can't guarantee that I will be one of the vocalists because my colleagues who hold that position are very good. Perhaps I will continue to be part of the accompaniment.

Para la música había un grupo que acompañó a todos los que subimos a la tarima, nada de cantar con una pista musical, nada de eso. Aquí todos demostraron sus dotes artísticos con músicos en vivo. Los primeros en cantar fueron los niños de todos los preescolares con sus respectivas maestras, luego la representación de las escuelas y liceo, por ultimo las maestras. Todas las instituciones de verdad que se prepararon de una manera increíble, nunca había asistido a un parrandón así, fue muy divertido y todos estaban muy alegres, con un gran espíritu navideño cantando gaitas y los niños villancicos.

Aunque acabo de llegar a la escuela la semana pasada, sabía cuál era la canción que estaban ensayando mis compañeras, así que en mi casa la escuché varias veces para al menos acompañarlas en el coro, porque aunque no tenía muchas ganas de subir a la tarima, sabía que esté más fuéramos apoyando con el coro la canción sonaría mejor. Estando arriba tome una fotografía del público, que por cierto había bastante gente. Cómo se ve en la fotografía no es que me haya colocado de primera en la fila, más bien me ubique atrás y apoyé con las palmas, el baile y el coro 😁. El año que viene cuando ya tenga más tiempo y confianza me integraré un poco más, aunque no aseguro que seré una de las vocalistas pues mis compañeras que ocupan ese puesto son muy buenas, tal vez continúe siendo parte del acompañamiento.
