My 2025 travel recap

in The Pub6 days ago (edited)

On 2024 new year's eve I did a travel recap of all the places I went during the year. I don't know why I've never done it before, it's such a great way to remind myself of my travels. Here's my 2025 travel recap on 2026 New year's Day. Happy new year everyone!!

April - Pula, Croatia

I was originally supposed to go to Istanbul, then there were the protests and we ended up cancelling at the last minute. With our mind set on going away, I had to find an alternative. I had never heard of Pula in Croatia before, and it turned out to be a nice surprise. The city is very old, and we managed to book a lovely apartment opposite the iconic 2000 year old amphitheater. On one of the days, we went to a nature park on an island called Brijuni Island which frankly speaking was a little underwhelming. Our other day trip to the lovely seaside town of Rovinj was much nicer. The unfinished draft of Rovinj has been sitting in my editor for many months. I hope it will make an appearance in 2026.

April - Ljubljana and Lake Bled, Slovenia

Ok, I know two holidays in a month sounds very extravagant, there's a good reason for that. The Pula trip was due to an earlier cancelled trip in March, and Slovenia was on the way to the Hive Creators day in Graz in Austria in early May. There isn't a direct flight to Graz for me. I have to either travel 4 hours to London to catch a flight to Graz, or fly from my local airport to Innsbruck or Salzburg and catch a train to Graz. Either way I had to do transfers. In the end, I decided to fly to Slovenia instead 😄!!!

Sound kinda crazy? But it makes perfect sense. Slovenia to Graz is about 3 hours by public transport, and there are direct flights from my local airport to Slovenia's capital Ljubljana. I've never been to Slovenia before, and I've always wanted to go to Bled. I spent 36 hours in Ljubljana and a few days in Bled, which I have yet to post.

May - Graz, Austria

This was my only Hive meet up this year, and I had a great time catching up with old friends and meeting new ones. I hadn't been to Austria since my younger days, and this is a perfect opportunity to add another pin to my Worldmappin map. I must rustle up a travel post sometime.

June - Bilbao, Spain

I don't normally go away in the summer, and I knew I wouldn't be going to HiveFest in Malaysia in November, it was a pity as Asia is my neck of the woods. In June I got my travel bug again and took a short trip to Bilbao in Spain, a city famed for its gastronomy, amongst other things. The food did not disappoint! I just realised I haven't written a single travel post about Bilbao, I'm really getting so behind with everything.

December - Antarctica

In my 2024 travel recap, I hinted at doing a big trip in 2025

If you follow my blog, you've probably realised by now that I went to Antarctica in December, and yes, I can't stop raving about it. So much so, that I've been working very hard to journal my trip. I did my first post a few days after I arrived in Antarctica, I was bursting to share with everyone. After I came home, I did a day by day summary to set up the framework for the rest of the posts. This was followed by days 1 to 4 and days 4 to 6 of my trip. There should be two more posts for the rest of the trip, plus maybe another one about the ship (if you're not already bored of it by then 😊)

2026 travels

Next year I have two planned trips so far. The first will be the Hive Creators day at Alicante in Spain in May. We had so much fun this year.

In September I've booked a cruise to Greenland. I'm going with my sister and she likes to book her holidays ages in advance. I want to go to Greenland because it sounds like a very unique place, quite remote and untouched, and I'd like to go before orange face gets his dirty paws on it. The cruise will finish in New York. The last time I was in the big apple was ages ago, I can't even remember exactly when, maybe 15 - 20 years ago?

Other than that, I have no other plans. I'd like to do Asia, Taiwan and Japan and maybe Singapore as well. It will be three years since I've been back. I'll have to see how things go later on in the year.

What about you? Did you go anywhere interesting this year, either locally or internationally? And what's on your bucket list for next year? No matter what your plans are, I wish you happy travels wherever you go in 2026 and don't forget to pin on @worldmappin to share with everyone on Hive!!

Travel broadens the mind, and squeezes the wallet, but hey one life live it, and to hell with what the neighbours say.
I like this re-cap, It is not that I am lazy, but I haven't got round to uploading my snaps from my camera yet fully for 25! Am just posting my road trip through the baltics for april and may. Still to come Turkmenistan early August, NYC end of August and the arctic circle November.
26 will be just as epic for me, 3 weeks through Pakistan in April, Transnistria for a week in May. then more genteel offerings of malta in September, and fingers and toes crossed, if I can get hold of a ticket to go see some live American Football, a return to San Fransisco in October. ( and hopefully NO Effing cruises!!)

Transnistria... I had to Google that. You do go for the most unusual places don't you! I look forward to read about that, please get your skates on when you come back, and for Pakistan!!

And arctic circle!! Where did you go? That's in my bucket list as well. Please share!

They may be unusual places yes, thats why I do them LOL, but the insurance costs are excessive due to govt advice against travel!

Up the west coast of Norway, the snaps are still unlooked at in the camera LOL

2025 was a good year, and 2026 looks promising too! Give Turkey another chance, it's worth the visit! I'm starting the year in Egypt, and no plans yet (as usual), but have a couple of more nature focused travel on my radar this year... let's see what the new year brings. Happy New Year!

Both Egypt and Turkey are new to me. Where are you going in Egypt? Cairo? Wherever you are, have a great time

I'm hopping around. Been in Cairo, now on Aswan, will cruise the Nile, and end in Sharm el Sheik diving in the red sea. Egypt was never a bucket list destiny but it has been an awesome surprise so far, loving it! Have a great 2026, and let me know if you ever need tips on these two countries, happy to share the experiences!

Aaaaah!! Are you coming to Alicante too?!?! If nothing happens we’ll meet there!!

My trips have been close, this year I have not been able to get far from my house. But I’m happy because thanks to Hive and publications like yours I have been able to be in Pula, Graz, Bilbao and even in the penguinland Antarctica, hehe.

It would be great to meet you as well Paloma!!!

You have been traveling a lot indeed , I'm still thiniking about to go or not to go to Alicante .but that is at the end of April so i still have some time to decide.

Congratulations !!

I hope you can make it, will be good to meet you

What a year that must have been. From European cities to something as otherworldly as Antarctica, your 2025 travels sound incredibly rich and varied. I really like how you frame travel not just as movement, but as something worth documenting and reflecting on. Wish I will be able to make this kind of recaps on my end too, but haven't really travelled anywhere in the last 3 years, so it's sort of hard right now.

Blogging has turned out really great to keep my travels alive, for myself mainly, and sharing with others is a big bonus.

Is work keeping you very busy nowadays? Any chance for Alicante in May for your first Hive meet up?

Not work, but finances. I lost my job since AI took control so powerfully in the last year. Anyway, I am not more of a person to share life updates on here, but in short... I won't be able to have any trips soon, including the one to Alicante as well :(

Damn! I'm sorry to hear that, AI is a pig, it's quite difficult to find an AI proof job nowadays.

Can Hive help in anyway? Curation guilds are always looking for good curators.

I honestly have no idea. Despite being on here for so long, I feel ashamed for never asking more questions or getting involved in projects to actually know all the stuff behind what we all see. I never knew what a curator meant, nor what it involves, so I don't know..

Pinged you on discord

You're indeed a hodophile.. more travel to come! :)

Yup, they're coming...

Happy 2026, hope your business takes off to the moon this year

hopefully, thank you

You are such a well traveled person. I have been to Croatia and a couple places in Spain, but neither of those you mentioned. I have no pictures of my time in Croatia regretfully, but do have some from Spain somewhere. I really enjoy your travel posts and look forward to where 2026 takes you.

Thank, and happy new year to you as well!

I don't have photos of some of my earlier trips either, the days before mobile phones, social media and Blockchain!

That's quite the travel year!
The cruise to Greenland sounds interesting. I didn't know that they had cruises that go there. I'm intrigued.

Happy new Year

It's a repositioning cruise from Reykjavik to New York passing through Greenland and Newfoundland, it sounds interesting. I was talking to one of the expedition guys from my Antarctica about this trip, and they say the best part of Greenland is the more remote areas in the east, and north west, which we obviously won't go in this trip. Now it's got me even more interested to explore Greenland more, but it's gonna cost me my remaining arm and leg 😬

Happy new year to you!!

Interesting. I know nothing about Greenland, other than it being well sought after these days...

"Remaining arm and leg" 😂
Yeah i imagine that its not a budget friendly destination. But im sure it will be worth it. Sounds like a cool trip!

I hear Canada is also very sought after these days 😉😄😜

Hahaha yeah that's true too, unfortunately.

You certainly get around ! That photo of Lake Bled makes me want to go there now.

But remind me closer to the time for the Alicante Hive Creator's Day. We usually try to get to that part of Spain each February and June, so I might be able to persuade "she who must be obeyed" to let us shift one of the trips slightly, money allowing. 😀

I've tagged you in their latest post, and asked them to tag you in the updates as well. Hopefully you can make it

Thank you 😀

congratulations frequent traveler , travel is the thing that broadens our minds
