Daily Painting – Day 19! (Sky Study + Hive Art Contest Entry)

Morning / evening everyone — honestly I’m not sure myself.
I’m writing this at 11am after painting this little sky study,
but I’ll probably post it tonight when life finally calms down. 😅
It took an hour? maybe an hour 15 givin the fact i had to stop and dry it off due to a catastrophe.. more about that later.

Anyway — here is Day 19 of my daily acrylic painting challenge!
I’m also offering it as an entry into the Weekly Hive Art Contest
(hopefully I’ve entered it correctly 🤞).

For anyone new: I’m doing the @hivebuzz monthly posting challenge,
trying to post every single day of the month.
For me, that means one small painting a day — the perfect excuse to get back into daily blogging AND daily painting.

I love little sky studies. Fun, loose, and not too serious.
Here’s today’s piece:

🎨 Colours Used

  • Cad Red Light
  • Quinacridone Magenta
  • Cad Yellow Medium + Cad Yellow Light
  • Burnt Umber
  • Burnt Sienna
  • White
  • Dioxazine Purple
  • Phthalo Green
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Cobalt Blue (tiny bit for cooling the mid sky)

Method

1. Background Tint

No full underpainting today — just a super light wash of Burnt Sienna over the whole canvas.

2. Sky

  • White + Burnt Sienna + mostly Ultramarine Blue,
with a little Cobalt Blue near the transition into the warm colours.
  • Kept it cool and clean to avoid the dreaded muddy green line
    where blue meets yellow.
  • Oranges, yellows, and reds were blended as needed,
occasionally using a touch of the complement (blue/purple)
to knock the saturation back a smidge.

3. Hills / Silhouette

An optical black, not tube black:

  • Burnt Umber
  • Magenta
  • Phthalo Green
  • Ultramarine
  • Tiny dab of Cad Yellow to warm/green it just a touch

4. Water

Honestly?
Just whatever was left on the palette — dragged horizontally.
A few tiny rock shapes and done.

😱 Catastrophe of the Day

Oh boy…

A water drop from my brush rolled straight down the canvas
from sky to foreground.
It made a complete mess.
I had to lay the canvas flat and wait for it to evaporate before touching it.
After drying, it had darkened, so I covered what I could.
Annoying… but hey — daily painting rules apply.

Also I originally started a different painting,
but yesterday’s leftover paints had turned into weird watery slime on the wet palette and everything went muddy.
So I ceremoniously threw that canvas on the floor
and began the one you see here instead. 😂

you can see the water drop above in the middle row, the first image has the drop right down

GPT as Art Critic (lol)

I fed both images into GPT for critique (don’t judge me). I mean i actually PAINTED the painting!
It actually gave some useful feedback:

  • Said the cloud values are better than my last study
  • Mentioned a couple of the cloud lines are a little too crisp
  • Said the water needed more blending
  • And overall that it was a solid improvement

Honestly… fair.
But this is a 1-hour painting and I had to go out,
so this is where the painting stays.
Daily painting is about done not perfect.

Challenge Rules

Hopefully I’ve ticked the boxes for the weekly contest entry.
If not, please let me know and I can adjust the post.

Thanks so much for looking at my art!
