The Last Ray

The bay was calm as the sun slipped into the horizon, splashing the sea with golden sparkles.

She watched the spectacle spellbound, until a flash caught her attention.

Just where the last rays licked the waves, something shimmered beneath the surface. An object that reflected the twilight with an unnatural glow.

Intrigued, she kicked off her shoes and walked toward the water. The glow faded for an instant, but reappeared closer with the next swell. She rolled up her sleeves and waded into the warm foam, reaching out.

His fingers touched something cold and smooth, not a rock but metallic. He clutched it and the following tide dragged it closer, revealing its shape. She held back a scream, her eyes wild.

It was a jeweled ring, set with crimson rubies... resting in a human hand, pale and wrinkled, the stiff fingers clutching the ring with unearthly tenacity.

The sun sank completely, plunging the scene into ominous darkness. She stood transfixed, the waves lapping at her ankles as she clutched the last glimmer of twilight and the terrible garment that hung from it.
