Everyday there is so much we see, hear and read, but sometimes we see things, that we wished we could forget or never saw them in the first place. The worst thing I’ve ever seen was on TikTok. This was recently when I was just scrolling, looking for funny videos and then, suddenly, I found a disturbing video.
It was about a man who killed his girlfriend and cut her body into pieces. Initially, I wasn’t sure what I was seeing. The video showed news clips and images of the crime scene, and it was really terrible. It made me nauseous just to look at. The way they described what he did to her, it was horrific.”
There’s no way a person could be that horrible, I thought. It was so sad to lady's face in the video and smiling in old pictures and know what happened to her. She had no idea the person she trusted would do such horrific things. Though I scrolled past quickly, the images lingered in my mind.
It was the only thing I could think about all day. I was even unable to sleep that night as each time I closed my eyes I pictured how frightened she must have been. I was just asking myself over and over again, “Why did I watch that? Why did TikTok let this even appear in my feed?”
It also got me thinking about how dangerous social media can be. There are things that we do not know how to respond to. There’s no warning, no how to shield ourselves from disturbing material. One second, you’re watching a humorous dance video, the next, you’re looking at something that haunts you for life.
Since that experience, I have been more careful about what I watch online. I never watch crime videos, because I don’t want to fill my brain with that horrible stuff. But however often I try to forget, that video sometimes returns to me. Just scary when you think about the kind of people out there.
Have you ever laid eyes on something on the internet that you wish you hadn’t? But something so troubling that you couldn’t for days stop thinking about it? (Sometimes it’s literally amazing how one video can turn your mood around completely.) I'm excited about topics for this week which has given me a reason to write about the experience, perhaps speaking about it will help me forget, if only a little.
I don’t have TikTok or instagram and it’s mostly because of these things. I haven’t seen the video but I’ve heard people talk about it and it’s just so crazy. A lot is going on in this world and at this point it’s becoming too much.
