Yesterday was a very special day for the Agric-Mohayabihi community in Tamale as we launched the 19th Hive Borehole. This was the final stage of the project and was where the borehole was officially launched and opened for use. This milestone also marks the fifth borehole we have been able to built in Northern Region Ghana and it is great development for the Hive Empowers Communities initiative.
The Northern Region happens to be one of the regions in Ghana that continues to struggle with access to water, given its harsh climatic conditions. It experiences extended dry seasons, erratic rainfall, and the inadequate water infrastructure make access to clean water a daily challenge for many communities in the region. Although there was “One Village, One Dam”, a government initiative which was implemented to remedy these challenges but failed to yield sustainable impact in the region.
The projects fell flat due to challenges like poor execution, maintenance issues, and not paying enough attention to community-specific needs. We believe the mechanized borehole has helped brought a relief to some of these communities and will provide a sustainable water solutions. In places such as Agric-Mohayabihi, the Hive borehole will make an incredible changes to day-to-day living.
We learned that women and children in the community always walk long distances to get water, an exhausting and time-consuming chore. With the new borehole, they can now have water within reach and women can spend more time focused on their homes, livelihoods, and children their education. Also, with the borehole, clean and safe water is provided to prevent water-borne diseases.. This project is very essential to the people of Agric, seeing the kind of changes it will bring to their lives.
Hive Empowers Communities Initiative has proven there’s a lot more that can be done with digital platforms in our communities beyond virtual currencies. Every single borehole done under this programis a testament of the potentials of what a decentralised community can achieve. Hive is solving real problems and helping disadvantaged communities, and the Agric Mohayabihi boreholeis a perfect example of this.
This year it's our(@mcsamm and I) biggest plan of sharing more of these stories with a larger audience. We're dedicating a lot of attention to building a social media presence to highlight these accomplishments to the world. This will promote awareness of the projects, give more exposure about Hive, help us get more support for beneficiary communities to ensure long term sustainance of the boreholes. Social media is a great way to show about the Hive boreholes and how they are making a real impact on people’s lives.
The event photos showed women and children happily congregating around the new borehole, and you could feel the hope and relief. For us, this project is a testament to the power of decentralized systems and the Hive community. All those who have supported us in this endeavor should be proud of the part they played.
We would like to thank everyone who has been with us in this journey and has believed in our vision of social impact to make this happen. with these milestones, we’ve shown that real change can happen when communities come together. We are very excited about these achievements and look forward to reaching out and touching many more lives.
