High cost of Accommodation is one of students nightmare

One of the problems that students face in school is accommodation, we know how high landlord increases their rent in school areas because they know students have no other choice but to rent it at whatever price they set.

This is why you see 4 to 5 students living in the same room to cut the cost of the apartment. I am just lucky that I was financially okay when I gained admission into the university but this does not mean that I got my apartment easily.

I thought it would be easy to get one until I started searching, being an area far from my place, It was not easy going to and fro in search of an apartment, the first agent took me to three houses and none of them was good.. The first apartment had already been rented out a few minutes before we got there and I even saw the lady who rented it smiling sheepishly and giving me the vibes she was happy she beat us to it.

The second apartment she took us to was located near a canal, and my supposed neighbor happened to be a heavy smoker, I saw him as he was puffing the smoke, moreover, nothing would even make me rent the house cos of the canal, mosquitoes would turn me to their appetizer and the place is too exposed that my goods may be stolen when I am not around, so not a safe place to be... The third apartment was an uncompleted story house and the woman was like I should pay and it would be completed in two weeks', I got tired of it and I told my sister that I didn't think the woman was the right agent, she doesn't have a good house to show for us so we told her not to bother.

I found another agent and the search began, the first house was a room self contain and it was going out for 350k yearly, the landlord was a nice man but some other people also wanted a cut in the house, the landlord asked me to come back in three days to finalize the deal cos he was traveling but unfortunately those people rented it out before that day and that was how I lost that apartment too... Another apartment was a new house that was 90 percent done and this apartment was 700k yearly, I love the house but again I was told to pay down and they also want to do the transaction online, I am a very cautious person and I don't give room for things looking suspicious so I said I would pass.

The last place the agent took us to is where I live now, assuming I knew it was a problematic house, I wouldn't have rented it, I saw the signs but didn't know what it meant, I know better now... The first sign was the mold in the bathroom wall which indicates leakage in the apartment above mine but I didn't get it... There was light when I got there so I didn't know it was a house of darkness when there was no electricity and not to mention the heat too... Anyway, I was happy at first in my first two weeks in the house because the Nepa doesn't take power, and if they did, it only lasted for a few minutes, it was when the light developed a fault I realized the mess I was in.

I understand the frustration of many students when the house rent is higher than the school fees, this is what leads many to beg their friends or known people to allow them to live with them, I have had two people ask me that but my answer is No because I won't feel comfortable having them around, I love my privacy but this doesn't mean I do not feel for them because I know what they are going through regarding accommodation but I can't displease myself to please others and also at the end, it will end in becoming enemies when you can't take it anymore and you want them to leave, so it is better not to start what you can't finish.

Meanwhile, I would always prefer an off-campus residence because I love my freedom, in the campus hostel, there are rules and regulations that students must abide by, there are some rules like not staying out late till 10p.m, even though I don't even go out during the day but the fact that a rule state I should not do might make me want to do it, also I think hostel can't be taken by one student, it is often 3 to 5 student sharing an apartment, which is something I do not like.

I do not know much about campus hostel, I never lived in one but I know they have rules and regulations.

A friend of mine just told me how their landlord increased their rent almost 100%. And that's not a house in a university area. I can imagine the ordeal many students pass through just to secure decent accommodations. The worst thing is that the landlords do not care, that's why they keep the rent that high. I was a bit moved by the story of your search for a house as a student. I do hope you finally get a place much better than your present accommodation. Thanks for writing.

my landlord also want to increase my rent a year after I got in but I refused to succumb to that and he could not argue with me cos the house is a problematic one

It’s exactly as you said. Most landlords know that Students don’t have any choice and that is why they give outrageous prices. Sometimes it’s even more annoying when the landlord doesn’t do any maintenance in the house with all the money he takes.

they don't, they want to collect and increase the price whenever they like...

At present, inflation is the problem of every household, every student's problem because here if a student tries to focus on studies, the fees are missed and still can't focus on frying at all, so that's better. That all people should work harder because here we see that inflation is not decreasing

You need the right agent most of the time. I have met over 10 agents in my different quests and I paid a lot of money in the process but I found the right agent one day after several years and eventually got where I'm living.
I think there aren't perfect apartments. You'll need to have a lot of money to have the perfect apartment and agents in Nigeria are the biggest scams next to Yahoo boys.

You've said it. Without being financial stable I don't think anyone should seek to have an education. I dropped out in my first attempt because I nearly starved.

I think you're experienced now and you've gotten better and your next house will be better

I dropped out in my first attempt because I nearly starved.

lol so funny but I also know people who dropped out but in their case, they do not have the school fees.

Yeah, with money, one can get a perfect apartment, and this is why this time around, I won't lower the budget; I will go for something standard.

Getting a comfortable apartment in school can be really stressful, sometimes you get tired of searching and you settled for anything that comes.

i think this depends on money, if there is enough money, getting a comfortable house is easy but most students cant afford that since 60 percent of student don't work and only rely on their parents

Finding a suitable place is not an easy task and if you get one the accommodation fee is too much for students. It's something most of the students need to face and it's extra pressure for anyone.

Landlords only care about their money, they ignore all mainitaince that ought to be done.
