This walk helped dannewton burn 837.0 calories.

Description from Strava:
It's coming up to the end of my holiday, and there were a few bits I needed in town. It's a beautiful day here, perfect for a wander into town, and useful too as I'm still doing some active recovery with regards to earlier in the week.

Besides, during a normal work week I'd be walking 4 miles most days of the week, so needed an excuse for a long walk and get my steps in.

I had a couple of things to go in for, the most important was to spend the above Gift card. I was given this by workmates for my birthday, and as much as I appreciate the £30 spending money, my heart sank when I saw the gift card, as these can often be a pain to use or spend anywhere. From previous experience, I know shops struggle to take the payment from these.

When checking the website, and looking at the list of 'hundreds of shops' where I could redeem the gift card, there was only one that a) accepted the card, b) was located in Lincoln, and c) actually had items I would want to buy.

The only choice was Sports Direct, I regularly buy stuff from here, and they have a reasonable range of clothing and accessories for both running and hiking, so I'm sure I could find something suitable in there.

We were forecast icy conditions this morning, so I pottered about the house for a bit, before heading into town just before lunch

Once in town, I quickly headed over to Sports Direct:

A quick perusal found some long sleeve running tops, I only own one, and theses will be useful as we head into winter. I also found a couple of long sleeve base layers, again for warmth during the winter months. I might use these for walking into work each morning, as its definitely cooled down over the past few days... I checkd the prices, and they came to £35... perfect!

Except it wasn't perfect, as they appeared unable to redeem the gift card. The bloke on the till said they didn't accept the card. I showed him the website on my phone which very clearly stated that Sports Direct accepted the cards. I asked him to try again. His supervisor came over, she said they were unable to scan the barcode on the giftcard, and therefore couldn't accept the card. I told them to try harder.

Eventually the manager was involved, and he explained that in to to use the card, I have to log on to the website first and activate (or transfer it) as a 'Sports Direct' voucher, and then they can scan that. He apologized but said its something the gift card website is at fault for, as it doesn't say this in an obvious place, and that he only found it himself but sifting pages of terms and conditions.

By this point I really wanted the items, so bought them anyway, but the manage wrote a note on my receipt so that if I can get the relevant voucher printed off, they will honour the transaction and refund my money so that I could use the giftcard to pay for it.

to be fair, I was expecting issues with spending it, so I shouldn't have been surprised.

Next on the list was HMV

While perusuing youtube last night, I had found out that a band '1914' had recently released a new album

yes, 1914 is their name, named after the year World War 1 began, and as you can expect, they use stories from WW1 as inspiration for their music

They are a mixture of Black Death and Doom metal, and as you can expect from their chosen subject matter, it can be grim listening. I have the previous 3 albums, and think they are a fantastic band, and so I bought the new album without hesitation!

I did double check if I could use the gift card in HMV, and the till assistant said no... worth a try lol

Time for lunch, so I went to Greggs

Lunch was a Mexican Chicken baguette, along with Lucozade and Quavers. After scoffing these, it was time to head for home.

It was a nice walk in the sunshine, and I picked up some useful stuff, just slightly frustrating on the giftcard front. I'm now gonna try to activate it online to get the voucher to work, and then I suspect I'll be heading back into town next weekend to try to use it

Wish me luck on that one!

Vouchers are obviously big business these days, but they can be tricky to use. I had one from work where I had to select which shop to use it in. I need to use it up before it expires, but there's not much I want from most high street shops. I guess I can get some clothes as some of mine are wearing out.

We still have an HMV near where I work, but I think they have a lot less shops now. There are not many places you can go to buy CDs.

Tricky is the word... obviously i appreciated the gesture from my team with regards to the gift, but it would've been easier if I had just been given actual cash lol.

And it says 'hundreds' of stores, but the choice is limited on what is actually in your area. I've since managed to 'buy' a £30 sports direct evoucher, so will use that next time (fingers crossed that works!)

As for hmv, there is very little option if you want music that's not in the current charts, some of my music is so niche that often I have to buy from the band itself (bandcamp is great for that), but not the same as looking through physical cds in a shop

I've bought a lot from Bandcamp, including physical media. I just like browsing in a shop as you may discover something new.

Yep same, I've been known to buy albums just purely on having interesting album art, really hard to do that theses days (plus with streaming/youtube it's so easy to hear the full albums from bands, that I rarely 'buy blind' either...)

Keep going, you're smashing your training at the moment and getting stronger every day.
