Description from Strava: Its the first day of my holiday! And after a sneaky, but much deserved lay-in (7:30am is much better than the usual start at 6am), it was time to crack on, as there was a busy day in store

First up was my AAT exam. I've been studying by home-learning, but in order to do the exam, I need to travel to an invigilator who can watch me. The nearest one to hear is in Grantham, so I headed over there this morning. Its all done online though which meant that as soon as I had finished the exam and clicked 'submit' then it was automatically marked, and I found out my result almost straight away

I passed by the way, thats a good start to my holiday!

I arrived home by lunchtime, and next job on the list was to start packing for my birthday trip, as I'm choosing to go away for a few days to mark the occasion. It involves 2 nights to visit my partner up in Carlisle, followed by 2 nights in the Peak District so I can go for a couple of walks/runs up in the hills

I've a jam-packed itinerary including touristy bits, parkrun and some trail running. As such I need all sorts of stuff including photography gear, trail shoes and running kit along with enough clothes to cover 5 days (and of course clothes suitable clothes for the time of year).

The list gives an idea of what I'm taking (if you can read my writing of course) and the cover image above shows the massive backpack I bought a few weeks ago, with all the smaller dry bags to keep stuff separate. It did take a couple of attempts to work out the correct order to put the items in, but eventually I managed it.

One other thing that I needed to check is the running vest that I'm taking with me:

One of the days that I'm in the peak district, I will be planning a long walk/run up into the hills. Theres a route I'm hoping to do (weather permitting) which is the Hope Valley Round, a 20 mile loop around Castleton, Hope and Hathersage. Even if I make good time, it will likely take somewhere between 5-7 hours, and I need to be prepared for it.

The running vest has:
2 bottles of water
Gloves and hat
peaked cap (for the rain)
waterproof trousers
waterproof coat
first aid kit
emergency blanket
whistle
map and compass
headtorch
mobile phone with digital map

I don't expect anything to go wrong, but I've at least got to be prepared for the worst!

First I had to make sure everything fitted in the bag ok, and then next up was to test it out to make sure the load was manageable.

And that of course meant I had to go out for a run...

Todays route was a ten mile loop around Branston. I needed it to be long so I could get a feel for how the bag felt over a decent amount of time. I also know that I'm going to be spending most of tomorrow sat on a train, so need to make I run far enough today to make up for the missing session tomorrow

I headed along the bypass

down onto the water railway

and then over the bridge into Washingborough

before heading into Branston, and then along the bypass to head back home.

The test went ok, the vest feels comfortable, and to be honest, doesn't even feel that heavy. I suppose the fact that 4 days a week I run home with a back pack full of uniform helps with that!

Now back home, its time for some last minute tidying, as I don't want to leave the pots in the kitchen sink while I'm away, and then I suppose it will be an early night, as my first train tomorrow is at 7:30am

its gonna be a looooong day tomorrow, but I'm really looking forward to it!

About the Athlete: Living in the UK, I am an intermittent Runner, but always striving for more consistency. When I'm not training I can be found photographing insects or listening to really loud angry music (which is the best type of music obviously!)
