Avantgarde-Metal: A new experience listening to music | (ENG) (ESP)

Avantgarde-metal is a little-known genre that tries to encompass all those bands that completely break the paradigms of an already conservative genre such as heavy metal.

The structures achieved in this genre are experimental, offering us a mix between different genres, with generally long songs where we can listen to classical, folk, electronic, rock, metal and other genres not only in certain parts of the song but also to the time, frequently forming three genres on a single musical scene.

El avantgarde-metal es un género poco conocido que intenta englobar a todas esas bandas que rompen completamente los paradigmas de un género ya de por si conservador como lo es el heavy metal.

Las estructuras conseguidas en este género son experimentales ofreciéndonos un mix entre distintos géneros, con canciones por lo general largas en donde podremos escuchar desde música clásica, folclórica, electrónica, rock, metal y demás géneros no solo en ciertas partes de la canción sino a la vez, formando frecuentemente tres géneros en un solo escenario musical.

This music is not digestible at all and most bands take some getting used to. Some are more experimental than others reaching bizarre and spooky terrain. A good example of this is Angizia, who make a metal sound with theatrical and terrifying music.

Esta música no es para nada digerible y toma tiempo acostumbrarse a la mayoría de las bandas. Algunas son más experimentales que otras llegando a terreno bizarro y fantasmagórico. Un buen ejemplo de ello es Angizia, que hacen un sonido metal con música teatral y terrorífica.

My beginnings with this type of music started with a band called Arcturus from Norway. At that time I was taking my first steps in the field of extreme metal and came across an album by these musicians. The first time I heard it it was difficult to take in but once the ear adjusts to these unusual structures we will probably look into more types of bands with this style.

Mis inicios con este tipo de música empezaron con una banda que se llama Arcturus de Noruega. En ese momento daba mis primeros pasos en el terreno del metal extremo y me cruce con un álbum de estos músicos. La primera vez que lo escuche fue difícil de asimilar pero una vez que el oído se adapta a estas estructuras inusuales probablemente indagaremos por más tipos de bandas con este estilo.

Much later I heard the album The Butcher's Ballroom by Diablo Swing Orchestra, a band that showed that genres such as flamenco, opera, classical and metal can merge and be very catchy at the same time but the most impressive thing about this band is the AnnLouice Lögdlund's powerful voice that gives that power to the songs.

Little by little this band began to get more experimental, releasing increasingly bizarre albums like their later works: Sing Along Songs for the Damned & Delirious and Pandora’s Piñatas, both highly recommended.

Mucho más tarde escuche el álbum The butcher’s Ballroom de Diablo Swing Orchestra, una banda que demostró que géneros como el flamenco, la ópera, la clásica y el metal pueden fusionarse y ser muy pegajosos a la vez pero lo más imponente de esta banda es la poderosa voz de AnnLouice Lögdlund que le da ese poder a las canciones.

Poco a poco esta banda se empezó a poner más experimental lanzando álbumes cada vez más bizarros como sus posteriores trabajos: Sing Along Songs for the Damned & Delirious y Pandora’s Piñatas, ambos altamente recomendables.

Angizia is another of the bands that set a standard in the genre, their album Das Schachbrett des Trommelbuben Zacharias offers a theatrical atmosphere with screams and operatic voices at the same time and with a sudden crazy metal element but without losing the dark atmosphere that listening to them implies, as if it were a play.

Very similar to this band and with the same side is Devil Doll, created by the dark and mysterious Mr. Doctor using a Sprechgesang style of voice, that is, singing and creating a theatrical experience at the same time as the Angizia band does, but in this case the atmosphere is even denser and darker, borrowing many gothic elements.

This genre becomes easier to listen to when we already have a lot of experience listening to different types of bands and our ears are open to new ways of producing music. I think it is a genre of pure musical art, where the mainstream is a sin and the important thing is the expression and experimentation with new sounds. It is not music for the masses, it is music for people interested in expanding their horizons at the auditory level.

Angizia es otra de las bandas que marcaron una pauta en el género, su álbum Das Schachbrett des Trommelbuben Zacharias ofrece una atmosfera teatral con gritos y voces operáticas a la vez y con un elemento metalero alocado repentino pero sin perder la atmosfera oscura que implica escucharlos, como si de una obra de teatro se tratara.

Muy parecida a esta banda y con la misma vertiente es Devil Doll, creada por el oscuro y misterioso Mr. Doctor usando un estilo de voz Sprechgesang, es decir cantando y creando una experiencia teatral a la vez como hace la banda Angizia pero en este caso la atmosfera es aún más densa y oscura, tomando prestado muchos elementos goticos.

Este género se hace más fácil de escuchar cuando ya tenemos mucha experiencia escuchando distintos tipos de bandas y nuestros oídos son abiertos a nuevas maneras de producir musica. Pienso que es un género de arte puro musical, donde el mainstream es un pecado y lo importante es la expresión y la experimentación con nuevos sonidos. No es un musica para las masas es musica para gente interesada en expandir sus horizontes a nivel auditivo.

Any gender that is defined or labeled is eventually predisposed to be repetitive creating the same formula with different forms but in the avantgarde this is what is tried to be avoided. There is a constant evolution on the part of these musicians who reject any type of conventionalism, creating a subversive atmosphere within the music.

Dissonances, unusual mixes between genres, strange voices and lyrics, unusual instruments in the territory of metal, electronic elements and other additions are what we can appreciate in this crazy genre but with an innovative force that has rarely been seen.

I think music should be about this, about experimenting beyond listening pleasure, creating new formulas for listeners to have a new experience at a sensory level. The limitless creativity of these types of bands is what prompted me to look for more bands like that or perhaps it is better to say no style and no classification.
Little by little I will bring you my opinion about the history and music of many of these bands but on an individual level. Skold !!

Cualquier género que se defina o etiquete eventualmente está predispuesto a ser repetitivo creando la misma fórmula con diferentes formas pero en el avantgarde esto es lo que se intenta evitar. Existe una constante evolución por parte de estos músicos que rechazan cualquier tipo de convencionalismo, creando un ambiente subversivo dentro de la música.

Disonancias, mezclas inusuales entre géneros, voces y letras extrañas, instrumentos no usuales en el territorio del metal, elementos electrónicos y demás incorporaciones son lo que podremos apreciar en este género alocado pero con una fuerza innovadora que pocas veces se ha visto.

Pienso que la música debería de tratarse de esto, de experimentar más allá del placer auditivo, crear nuevas fórmulas para que los oyentes tengan una nueva experiencia a nivel sensorial. La creatividad sin límites de este tipo de bandas es lo que me impulso a buscar más bandas por el estilo o quizás sea mejor decir el no estilo y la no clasificación. Poco a poco les traeré mi opinión acerca de la historia y música de muchas de estas bandas pero a nivel individual. Skold!!
