El proyecto HIM nació con varios traspiés en el año 1991,en ese entonces Ville Valo trabajaba en una tienda pornográfica que pertenecía a su padre, además él no tenía una idea clara en ser el vocalista permanente de la banda, ya que venía de ser baterista y bajista en bandas anteriores, luego de ello el bajista amigo tuvo que cumplir servicio militar y este proyecto se paralizó por un tiempo, en ese entonces de manera secreta Ville Valo fue potenciando su voz y descubriendo su pasión por el canto, el frío y la melancolía de aquel país lo hizo aferrarse más a la música, una guitarra acústica, lápiz y papel eran sus herramientas favoritas para pasar el tiempo, todo esto luego que salía aquella tienda pornográfica de su padre, desde ese entonces su vida era escribir canciones y componer con su guitarra poesías oscuras y melancólicas basadas en el amor, en ese momento se dio cuenta que su vida dependería de esto, de la música y nadie más que él podría cantar sus profundas canciones, pasa el tiempo y el proyecto inglés nace y todo con un gran adelanto musical por parte de su vocalista y así la banda empieza a dar sus primeras presentaciones.

Como sabrán Finlandia es un país muy frío, muchos jóvenes beben muy seguido para mantenerse calientes por dentro y esto Ville Valo lo hacía a diario además el vocalista cuenta que solía ser un poco tímido y el alcohol lo ayudaba a entrar en confianza, también otro vicio que se apoderó a temprana hora del vocalista fue el cigarrillo, el confiesa que sentía mucha timidez o rareza estar parado en el escenario sin ningún instrumento más que un micrófono, confesaba su rara necesidad de tener un par de cosas en la mano mientras la banda tocaba, según esos instrumentos de apoyo ese era el fumar en el escenario y tomarse una copa tras otra, él asegura que esto fue lo que lo hizo sentir cómodo mientras cantaba, por un lado fue bueno digamos que un bien momentáneo ya que esto lo hacía cantar de una manera más profunda y era notorio que dejaba el alma en aquel micrófono cosa que hizo crecer a su banda en gran manera pero por otro lado estar sumergido en estos vicios hacía que su voz y su vida se fuesen desgastando notoriamente por desgracia él ignoraba su propia salud y se refugiaba en el bien musical.
