Cyclamen, my favorite winter flower

Today I'm sharing some photos of my favorite winter flower: the cyclamen. The scientific name is Cyclamen, a genus belonging to the Primulaceae family.

Oggi condivido alcune foto del mio fiore preferito dell’inverno: il ciclamino. Il nome scientifico è Cyclamen, un genere che appartiene alla famiglia delle Primulaceae.

These plants are relatively short, with a bushy habit, and have a bulb from which leaves and flowers emerge every year.

The flowers can be in many colors: lilac, violet, pinkish-white, or white. My favorites are those with shades of color!

Le piante di questo genere sono relativamente basse, con un portamento cespitoso, e presentano un bulbo dal quale ogni anno nascondo foglie e fiori.

I fiori possono essere di tantissimi colori: lilla, violetto, bianco rosato o bianco. I miei preferiti sono quelli che presentano delle sfumature!

It’s a plant native to the Mediterranean basin, but today it can also be found in Asia and Africa.

In Italy, in particular, we have some specific wild species such as Cyclamen hederifolium, Cyclamen repandum, and Cyclamen purpurascens.

Si tratta di una pianta autoctona del bacino del Mediterraneo, ma oggi è possibile trovarla anche in Asia e in Africa.

In Italia, in particolare, abbiamo alcune specie spontanee particolari come Cyclamen hederifolium, Cyclamen repandum e Cyclamen purpurascens.

In ancient times, the cyclamen was known for its therapeutic virtues, as it contains cyclamin, a powerful toxic substance. Nowadays, however, it is one of the most widespread ornamental flowers. In Japan, it is even the sacred flower of love!

Nell’antichità si parlava del ciclamino per le tue virtù terapeutiche, in quanto contiene la ciclamina, una potente sostanza tossica. Al giorno d’oggi, invece, è uno dei fiori ornamentali più diffusi. In Giappone è persino il fiore sacro dell’amore!
