I read an interesting article about a supposed (I am always skeptical) move in China on the future of gaming, where they are introducing legislation to restrict those under eighteen of playing games other than for an hour on Friday night, weekends and public holidays. Obviously, enforcing this is going to be difficult without centralized measures in place, so they are banning online gaming companies from providing services outside of these time and also requiring real names to be used in order to play.
Perhaps obviously, I disagree with centralized control like this - but I do agree that there should be limitations on time children spend gaming.
There are reports (again from China, but very plausible) that children's eyesight is being damaged from all of the screen time and it reminds me of my parents saying "Don't sit too close to the TV, it will ruin your eyes". Yet now, we all sit 12 inches from screens for many more hours a day than we did as children and we no longer even have the break periods, as we carry the screens with us wherever we go.
For the last decade, there has been increasing alarms due to living sedentary lifestyles where we don't move enough, and at least anecdotally from my own life, me and many of my friends are suffering for it - where our parents did not. This has been further emphasized over the last year and a half where many people don't even need to leave the home for work, meaning they are not only walking less, they are also often sitting in less than ideal conditions for many hours of the day. and for a lot of people during this time, restrictions on movement as well as instilled fear, have kept people at home outside of working hours too.
This obviously has effects on our health in many ways and as such, will increasingly put strain on healthcare systems and it will expand as we age, probably ramping up as while we get into worse condition, we will become even more sedentary in our living.
I know that a lot of people defend gaming, but this is not only about gaming itself - it is more a commentary on how many of us live our lives in general. I know that for myself, I am far less active than I should be and I feel it in my body daily, yet I also find it difficult to get motivated enough to move. I am guessing that out of 7 billion people, I am not the only one who suffers to get inspired.
That said, I am an opponent of centralized control and take the "my body, my choice" approach. A lot of people say the same things - and then they also want compulsory vaccinations introduced - without seeing the conflict.
What I do think is that parents should do a better job of parenting, but we too are caught up into the trap of culture and would apparently rather spend our time gaming or on social platforms, rather than parenting. What is interesting is that if we had to directly pay for the healthcare of children other than our own, we would probably want parents to take a more active role to ensure their kids are well educated, fed and exercised, so that they were less of a burden on our purse strings. Yet, since this is pushed to the state, we take the "to each their own" approach, even though the state is using our wallets to cover the costs.
We are all judgmental though, it is just that most of us choose not to talk about it publicly, because we fear reprisal or social backlash of some kind. Rather than having open discussions, we censor ourselves, which can make our lives easier, but it takes away a lot of the social value of communication.
In many ways, it is like how talking about money issues was made taboo and as such, the knowledge and tolls needed for financial literacy ended up in fewer and fewer hands. We can see where that has led us today, as the economy is filled with people who are financially struggling, yet don't have an inkling as to why, other than blaming those who have money. They don't question how the money ended up pooled in a small population, they just no it isn't fair.
For decades already, it "isn't fair" that people are in better physical condition than others, with many blaming genetics. This of course plays a large part, but it is like social and cultural considerations do not count, as they are a "freedom of choice" matter and therefore sacred. Even though, what people actually prefer to do is have the freedom of choice to impose rules onto others, in much the same way that the Chinese government has this freedom of choice - the freedom to take away other's freedoms.
Don't you find it interesting that we are often no different? Given the power, how many of us would be much the same, impressing our will onto others, because we think we are right? Like children, we all complain about being grounded and losing our toys, yet we still expect to be looked after when we can't take care of ourselves.
We are living in strange times now, as what is really important to our future, doesn't get much attention, yet what is quite insignificant, is blown way out of proportion. We are all part of the process though and we can all affect the average by handling ourselves well, even if only slightly. I think that at the moment though, the average is getting worse in many areas of what makes us powerful as a species - but a worsening average doesn't mean everyone is getting weaker.
While we complain about not having freedoms - we seem to be more than willing to keep handing ours over for other people to make the choices for us.
It is all a game.
Do you have a controller to play with?

This is one of the reason i do not have any game console, xbox or playstation. I do not have enough time for something like it. I like the ocassional game online, but the PC is enough for it. I deleted games from my phone, as i tend to become a bit obsessive. I am a firm beliver that my kids should not see phone or tablet for themselves as they grow up, at least until year 3-4-5. Today's technology is bad and addictive for kids.
I play words with Friends with one woman who is in her 70s. The games take days :)
We kept our daughter screen free for 3.5 years - until lockdowns and restrictions and she was home for 3 months, while my wife and I were working in a smallish apartment. Even now though, she barely watches anything and it is only on the PC - no phones, other than video chatting with family.
he skills needed to be a user are easy to pick up later. The skills needed to be a creator, are very difficult to get later. The first 3 years are very important.
Totally agree! 100%
I somewhat understand I too don't like children's playing games and not studying because they can have all the fun they want after getting over childhood and gaming is a very big problem in china because people can get the hands-on lots gaming pc in shops to play with friends I don't know what they called that place do you
It is hard for many parents to find the line, especially when kids are getting targeted too through advertising and peers. However, people have to take responsibility for themselves and stop relying on companies and governments to do it for them, because by design, they won't.
Yeah right I try to only let kids play 1 to 2 hours of video games
Honestly I sometimes feel like people don't know what to do with their "freedom". Freedom does not free you from responsibilities. It is a responsibility to take care of yourself, to take care of those around us and yet we choose not to far too often.
When you are the one controlling your game, when you are the game master are you just fucking around and kill everyone in your game, or you build and are responsible for the players to have a great time?
This is the problem with much of it, as even if we make our own decisions, I think so many of them are made by what we consume - so, depending on what we are eating, our decisions are affected. A lot of people buy crap because someone on TikTok (or whatever) said to buy it, and they think they are making the decision themselves.
Freedom! :)
Some simply are not designed to be game masters. While they are capable of following whatever they think they freely chose, they are still simply following something unable to determine that choice maybe cost them their life in the end or someone else's. So the question then is did their freedom to make those shitty choices was worth it? Was it the best outcome for them and others?
Life doesn't give two shits about our freedoms. At some point it will smack you in the head and tell you it is about enough. That is the ultimate Game Master and The world pre-set rules.
I've heard someone say, that people do more sports than they have ever done. But we're moving less than we've ever done.
Big part of this is because we're doing less manual work and we're using cars to move so much. Instead of walking, using the bike etc. we're driving the car everywhere. Kids probably ride their bike for a few years but parents are driving them everywhere and when they get the chance to buy a moped/scooter/car they'll just start using it.
Cars kill peopl Very slowly and most usually those who are in the car. Driving everywhere.
We are definitely moving less on average and I think with less range of motion. At least for me, I feel my body protesting how I treat it.
I don't know if you have this reaction - but nearly every time I see someone on one of those Tier eScooter things, it looks like they could benefit from a brisk walk. =)
My body is my temple.
I'm moving too little, I'm assuming most people are. Now as I've started working from home I've realized how little I use my bike, so I've tried to start using the bike more often when I'm going somewhere. I've started using my huge backpack for groceries so I don't need the car for groceries. It can be exhausting but it would be much worse if I didn't do it, as "hyötyliikunta" is the most important kind of liikunta.
Is the temple getting larger?
Just remember, Halloween is coming...
I am sitting on the couch as I work at the moment and it is destroying me. Seriously - I am a potato.
Potatoes are beautiful.
Let's go back to my post from 2017:
https://peakd.com/@apsu/the-best-compliment-to-a-woman-you-re-like-a-potato
(edited. not sure why google redirected me to beta.peakd.com instead of peakd.com but link has now been replaced)
That was some of your best potato.
did the beta one still work?
Being potato is great and you should be happy to be a potato.
And beta one worked, but I thought it looked suspicious, so I prefer the "normal" link.
You have made me remind of my parents saying "Don't play that much atari, you will ruin your eyes". They were right to protect us from potential negative effect on our health.
Nevertheless, I still play PS4, use laptop for both individual and work and use mobile. All has some inches of screen. I try to care my eyes meanwhile.
I don't agree such interference in private lives by goverments. Such things could be prevented by education or public service ad.
I wonder what the percentage change in prescription glasses has been over the last few decades and, how much earlier people are getting glasses now.
Isn't this government intervention?
I meant to say self education, and public service ad is not a compulsory, no intervention-no force. E.g. cigarette.
I understand. I just wonder where the line gets drawn for example, in school education. At the moment around the world, most education systems have a lot to be desired in this area, as governments push their own ideas onto everyone equally. In some cases it is beneficial, some not.
I think it is in generally for history and social studies.
very good😘🙌 I don't have enough HP but all for you😁🤩
It is all appreciated! ;D
Useful comments go a long way too.
LOL!
I love this post, as it points out the old adage *Even a stopped clock is right twice a day".
I can't say that I agree with authoratarinism, I am against it, but I can't disagree with the government encouraging it's children to get outside and play, and by extension or net effect play video games less LOL
I love all things technology, and video games and the ever increasing quality of the graphics are wonderful to watch. But more importantly I love the hybridization of blockchain and video games, the so called Blockchain games, where you earn money playing video games. The technology used in these endeavors will eventually bleed over into other areas like decentralized finance, and I believe the gaming envirnment is a great one to test software code for vulnerabilities, as gamers live to find and exploit such weaknesses to their advantage. LOL
It will be interesting to see if the above government can enforce such a rule, but I guess if you go to the source, the game manufacturers and introduce code limiters it maybe possible. As in all things "you never know what you can do, until you try". Oh the irony of an authoritarian government proving the validity of once again an old adage meant to encourage people to stretch beyond their limits by limiting people.
:)
😎
Wow, thanks for the enlightenment I do really appreciate @tarazkp

I used to play a lot but then I figured it's not productive.
Now, I play once or twice a month, usually to talk with old friends, multiplayer games are fun when you get to crack jokes with your college/school friends on a weekend.
I have a funny habit of walking while thinking. I can't sit and think. I have to walk, so I walk a lot. Sometimes for hours when I am troubled with something.
Also, I usually listen to an audiobook in the evening, and walk for one hour(one chapter). My daily step count is usually way above 20,000 steps😂
Then, I see my nephew. He has his headphones on for about 8-10 hours a day. Always lost in his phone, barely talking to anyone.
Kids are weird these days. Sure, parents have a bit of responsibilty, but I see most parents are lost in consuming content for hours😅
Maybe only a few escape from this constant consumption loop. And start producing content. Or avoid consuming to that level.
I agree with you, many people defend the games and express that they are not harmful, and they do not even supervise their children, if the games they use are appropriate for their age. Of course games can be harmful to children, they can cause behavioral changes, too many hours in front of the computer screen can damage the eyesight, too many hours sitting and playing can also cause damage to the spine, poor diet because they do not eat well or at the appropriate times, among others.
Excellent article @tarazkp - for me it's all about balance. Very difficult in these times in which we live.
Absolutely. Incentive better behavior, rather than only punishing poor behavior. It is far more effective and creates a larger gap between the two.
