We are used to listening to music constantly, it is common to connect with it by its messages, its melodies, the rhythm and a few characteristics that we don't know what they are in the first place. Those characteristics are "that something" that we don't understand what it is, but we like it and it makes us listen to the song over and over again. Are those details that make us imagine a place, a space or a situation. Details that make us believe that we are together with the musicians in a small room or in front of a stage at a concert. We listen to instruments and sounds that come from a place in front of us in the stereo, others that come from our right or our left, choruses that overwhelm us in their spatiality and in general, a dynamism in the sound that generates interest and curiosity throughout the song.
All this is thanks to a technical staff that with enough creativity knew how to capture the sound of each element in the recording process, a staff that managed to define a space in the frequencies, in the stereo and in the dynamics for each element of the recording in a process known as mixing, so as to have a result with enough cohesion that leads us to imagine that situation or place where the musician wanted to take us. But this is not enough, since we listen to the music from different platforms, it is necessary to have the mastering staff that will be able to give the necessary final touch so that when we listen to the music in our device we can enjoy it in the best possible way. Anyway, these processes are my job and a big part of my life.
My name is Leonardo Castillo, I have a degree in Music with mention in Music Production, my experience has been based on recording, editing, mixing and mastering in different recording studios in the city where I live, Caracas. I also worked for a while as a roadie in a variety of concerts, festivals and events. Over time I realized that I definitely prefer the studio and here I show you a small part of that.
Mi camino hasta ahora
My experience has been varied, I started in 2008 playing guitar, passionate and obsessed with it I decided that I wanted to record myself and that's where this path began.
Once I had the recordings I began to wonder why I couldn't sound like the original songs despite playing the same thing the bands played, as I researched I realized how wide the world of audio was. I had to learn through the internet what the tools were, equalizers, compressors and other options to modify the sound and make it sound more like the songs I was playing. Over time I started adding other instruments like bass and drums, in order to make full band covers and not just guitar covers.
A few years later it was time to decide what I wanted to study in college, after much thought I realized that what made me happy was music, I didn't want to spend the rest of my life doing something that would give me money, but no happiness, at that time I started my degree.
During my studies at the university I continued studying on my own, I was not satisfied with the information they provided me, I always wanted more, I had as a goal to be able to make every project that came into my hands sound on an international professional level. A year or so passed and I got the first job of my life and not only that, my first job was in a recording and rehearsal studio, mostly in Latin and Rock music. I spent a year there learning while doing the job.
A year later I changed jobs, I started in a live sound company, this company also managed the biggest studio in the city (Velvet), so I wanted to take advantage of that job with the hope of achieving a bridge that would take me to that studio where I dreamed of working so much. My goal was to get there many years later, but the times were ahead of me and I managed to get there much earlier. At the beginning it was tough, it was a very high professional level that I was not used to, but with a lot of effort, trial and error I managed to learn, thanks to the engineers who had been working there for a big part of their lives I was able to learn more miking, recording and editing techniques. I also learned how to deal with musicians in a studio, you don't learn that anywhere else but in the studio and I am grateful for having been able to live that experience. The studio used to record musicians from classical, latin, jazz, sometimes rock bands, reggae and traditional Venezuelan music groups.
Parallel to that work, the same company proposed me to work in another studio on those days I didn't work in the main one, that other studio was the recently opened Bigott Foundation recording studio, where I had the fortune to work on the B11 project and meet @manuelmusic (member of this group).
I also had the opportunity to work with other musicians and other musical projects.
At the end of these projects I decided it was time to become independent from these studios, I wanted to work on the music I really liked and focus all the knowledge I had gathered from all my experiences on another kind of music that was not in the studios I had worked in before.
Now, in 2020 I find myself in a new situation, after a lot of work I now have my own equipment and a team of people around me, among which are @azamoramusic and @manuelmusic, with whom I am building a new project.
