he Hive community town Hall is a threadcast that is intended to inform, engage, manage and communicate values and possibilities of the hive blockchain system. Also to discuss the strength and the weaknesses as regards how it is either pleasurable or perplexing to hive uses.
On the threadcast hosted by Hive Town Hall on 1st of December 2023, one of the most important and controversial topics that directly affects both hive and the blockchain ecosystem at large, was treated as it was opened up for a democratic scrutiny. The topic was "the place of rewards and downvoting". In a concise manner, the focus was on these questions such as;
How should rewards be awarded on the Hive blockchain?
Should it be by the resources which a content generates to the system?
Should it be by the richness and creative prowess expressed in the content?
Are there needs for downvoting?
If there are needs for downvoting, how should it be regulated to avoid victimization and sectionalism?
As I listened to this threadcast, I discovered that the Hive blockchain system has been fighting effortlessly to have an enabling environment where everyone will have an equal opportunity for all.
On the question of how rewards should be awarded on the blockchain, some speakers held the opinion that it's better calculated on the value of the resources to which a content generates to the blockchain system or the level of traffic it racks up. Truly, in as much as this opinion sounds good in thoughts, it's rather look less equitable to the beginner in the system. A content can actually be all shades of good but if it was posted by an amateur who doesn't have what it takes to arrest traffic, it may not get the desired curation. However it was addressed that such wasn't the nature of Hive.
The other focal point on this town Hall threadcast was the issue of downvoting. To put in perspective, downvoting refers to the system where a person's content on hive is thumbed down by the curators or some curation on the reasons best known to them. It could be that they found the post as plagiarism or some other reason that could make the content less rich.
However the place of down voting was a critical one by most speakers on the threadcast. A speaker cited that there could exist a bully who is also a curator, that may take it upon himself and go around downvoting people's contents. Other instances where it's possible that the downvoting system can be used against the aim of its advent.
Personally I think that the down voting system is a system that would kill the creativity and confidence in the minds of Hive's content creators. Sometimes the upvotes help to encourage and build a more sophisticated mindset in the mind of a writer or content creators that would make them do more. But when you simply tell them that they are not good enough, it affects their spirit.
This threadcast was really thrilling and engaging.
